Major fire near hospital in Labrador City
A large building under construction on Booth Avenue in Labrador City has been burning for hours. (Ken Rideout) Emergency personnel are fighting a major fire on Booth Avenue in Labrador City. Firefighters were called to the scene just after 1:30 a.m. The burning building is a large apartment complex being constructed next to the Captain William Jackman Memorial hospital — which has now been evacuated. The burning building is adjacent to the city’s hospital, which had to be evacuated.The hospital is asking people to avoid coming to the area, and to call their switchboard at (709) 944-2632 for more information. The emergency room is still operating, but for urgent cases only. The hospital in Fermont, which is about 30 km from Labrador City, is on standby to receive people who need non-urgent care. There’s a lot of smoke and power has been cut off at the hospital. Evacuated patients have been taken to a nearby Salvation Army Church.
