Labrador West Pre-Budget Meetings
It’s a yearly exercise. Provincial government reps show up in communities around the province to hear where locals think the money should flow…and where it should be cut. Yesterday afternoon, pre-budget hearings came to Labrador City. Presenters said that even though the government is preaching restraint, it still needs to invest heavily to sustain and manage the region’s phenomenal growth. There were calls for more money for roads, water and sewer lines, and, of course, housing. Noreen Carren is with the Labrador West womens’ centre. She says groups like hers need help. Ron Barron is the Mayor of Wabush. He appealed for more spending on infrastructure. and… Finance Minister Tom Marshall was supposed to attend the pre budget hearings, but he was off sick. His replacement was Charlene Johnson, the Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services. Labrador Morning’s Mike Power spoke to her after the hearings.
