Addictions treatment for Labrador Innu - Closer to Home
Jack Penashue For years, many Innu struggling with addictions have had to leave their home communities and travel to Ontario for treatment. The Brentwood recovery home in Windsor Ontario has helped a lot of people, some whom have become well known leaders in Labrador. But for some, returning home often meant returning to old routines — and slipping back into addiction. Well, the Innu First Nation in Sheshatshiu is working to change that. For two years councilors have been brought from Ontario to the community for short stays. And now, two staff members from the Brentwood Recovery Home are coming to Shehatshiu for an entire year. Social Health Director Jack Penashue helped make that happen. He’s speaks with Colleen Connors.
