Stories of the Newfoundland Rangers...70 years on
Nathan Penney Ninety-one year old Nathan Penney is one of only a handful of Newfoundland Rangers still alive. Up until Confederation, the Newfoundland Ranger force was the police force for remote parts of the island and Labrador. But, they also took on the role of social workers, paralegals, and paramedics. During his 5 years and 1 month of service, Penney worked at Battle Harbour and other detachments on the island. On his Labrador assignment, he had to contend with life without electricity, telephones or penicillin. Now he’s back in a much more modern Labrador, visiting his daughter in Happy Valley Goose Bay. That’s where we caught up with him.
