The Great Labrador Canoe Race!
Before there were ferries and airplanes in Labrador, there was the canoe. This weekend marked the second Great Labrador Canoe Race in Happy Valley Goose Bay. More than twenty teams lined up on the churchill river to race 10 kilometers to the finish line. The race was not just testing endurance and strength, but it also incorporated Labrador’s trapper traditions. Half way through the race, all paddlers stopped to collect a medallion from trapper Joe Goudie and portage across Willow Island, then back in the water to paddle to the finish. Reporter Colleen Connors brings you this piece, to help you feel like you were there.
