Woodland Caribou Trends

It may seem hard to imagine, but woodland caribou used to inhabit areas as far south as Vermont and Wisconsin in the United States. What caused them to leave? A change in habitat. Scientists say if we aren’t careful, the same thing could happen right here in Canada. A panel of independent scientists, called the International Boreal Conservation Science Panel released a report on this earlier this summer. Jeff Wells is a scientist with the group, and Valerie Courtois is a senior advisor with the Canadian Boreal Initiative. We spoke with them about the report and how it could affect the Mealy Mountain, Red Wine and Lac Joseph herds here in Labrador.
