Reaction to the Voiseys Bay Industrial Inquiry Commission.

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for VALE.jpg Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for usw.jpgThe Industrial Inquiry panel into the VALE strike at Voisey Bay released the final part of it’s report this week. The panel was asked to review the 18 month strike at Voisey’s Bay to identify factors that contributed to the failure to reach an agreement for so long. The report acknowledges that in a global marketplace there are no effective economic or social pressures that provides incentive for multi national corporations to negotiate. Amoung other things the panel has recommended a mandatory Labour-management committee be established. They want to see government re-evaluate the use of conciliation boards ..AND they have asked that government amend the Labour relations act so that, when all else fails, they can impose a collective agreement. We have lots of reaction to this… starting with Boyd Bussey of with Steelworkers Union.

Darin King is the Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. We reached him in St Johns:

and, Richard Alexander is the executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers Council.
