Jigs and Reels - Charlottetown
Rick Oram is trying to strike up a ball hockey league in the small Labrador community of Charlottetown. He began a lobby effort to rasie funds back in December. It's a lot He's Tony's guest on Jigs and Reels.
Rick & Olive Gaye Penney decided to start a ball hockey club (10-14 year olds), not knowing it would be such an uphill battle. When they asked the recreation committee if there were any funds for new equipment i.e. (nets, hockey balls, etc.), they said that there were none available at this time, and not knowing when there would be.
First there were problems with scheduling practice times , then money for gym rentals and to purchase the equipment we needed to practice and play. Fundraising ideas were needed to help. They still have a long way to go and need all the help they can get.
Goalie gear for a child 85 lbs. is hard to find, helmets with full cage just can't be bought here at the local store. These are the some of the problems we have, but we are still trying to go further then it has ever been done here before, and maybe even including ages 5-9 & 15-17 year olds next year, depending on the coaching staff available.
Coach training would be an asset for us to teach the players the right way to play without all the bad habits that they pick up on their own.
