On the maiden voyage of Know Your Rights, we're talking about the most basic of guarantees: free speech.
And, working on this show, I've learned a lot about free speech. I've learned that there's the average Canadian who really has no idea what they can and cannot say.
Then there are those who test the very limits of free speech in Canada - and you're going to meet a couple of those people in the show. They may not just test the limits of free speech, they may test your personal limits...
Did you know, though, that freedom of speech is only part of what you have in this country.
As a matter of fact, the actual clause reads:
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms Section 2 b - Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression including freedom of the press and other media of communication.
Okay, so I have the freedom to think, believe and have an opinion on anything I want. Of course I do. I'm thinking horrible things right now. That's my right. Nothing you can do about it. Makes complete sense to me. The trouble comes when I open my mouth...that's where freedom of expression, can get really messy.
Hang on tight.
