Hi there. mark here and i am here with a review for the game Pokemon Red for the Gameboy Color. Now this game was released way back in 1998, and it was the first game in the Pokemon franchise to actually make it to north america and wow it was a good game mixing elements from all kinds of video game genre's like RPG's and adventure style gaming and it appealed to all ages even adults.
The game centres around a young man celebrating his birthday by becoming a rookie pokemon trainer who sets out on an adventure to catch all the pokemon there are and to enter the pokemon league and win it to become a pokemon master. you may say wow doesn't sound much like a story but when you get into it the main theme of the game really makes up for the lack of story because the game makes you imagine your own story line. The game itself lasts well over 30 hours and with various pokemon to use the game lasts even longer. the replay value is huge in this game because each pokemon brings a new path to beat the game because there are different types of pokemon different moves to learn and a lot of enemies to face so it's a fun ride.
There aren’t very many faults in this game. the only real grudge i have is with the in battle graphics. it shows the pokemon in all their 2 bit glory but when the game goes back to the over the top view the graphics take a nose dive. With bland graphics and unfavorable colors this game really drowns out what is a fun experience. The bosses are another thing that gets the game a low score. each boss is easy because they are all the same. each boss has a weakness and you can easily figure out what it is without thinking and beat them in seconds of challenging them which isn’t bad or anything but if i spend hours leveling my pokemon up i wanna have a good match not something where i throw my level 32 weedle in against bruno's level 20 onyx and beat him with a poison shot. Weedle’s weakest move by the way says how easy they are.
Other than that when this game came out all of the pokemaniacs including me were in a rave because we all imagined having our very own pikachu or charmander and now we had the chance so i was a very happy kid at the time. i still find myself digging out my old gameboy and playing some pokemon to relive those good ol days. I give this game a 4 out of 5 for giving me a great gaming experience.
