Slam is a unique book written about a teenager named Greg "Slam" Harris, who lives in a troubled area of New York City. Greg is an all-star basketball player who has a hard time keeping his grades up. he makes the varsity basketball team at his school but he's benched for being a showboat. Now, not only does Greg have to bring up his grades, he also has to prove his skills to his coach!
Walter Dean Myers did a fantastic job of creating a whole new world of basketball in the quiet streets of NYC. Slam can relate to any kids who has faced similar problems in his or her life. I enjoyed Myers' unique style of writing, he portrayed the book from the view of a person who is often associated with gangsters and mafia. I also liked how Myers explained Slam's basketball games. He told the reader exactly where every player was on the court. This helped me create an image of the game in my head.
I would recommend this book to any basketball fan who enjoys a good read.
