The novel "The Watsons Go To Birmingham ~ 1963", tells the story of a ten year old named Kenny Watson and his near death experience when he goes to Birmingham in 1963. His brother, Byron Watson has gotten into trouble the past year and he is driving his parents crazy. As a result, Byron is going to have to stay in Birmingham with Grandma Sands and the whole family is going with him. After a long 18 hour drive, the Watson's arrive in Birmingham and meet Grandma Sands. Then, Kenny goes swimming and gets nearly drowned by a creature that Byron made up to scare Kenny and his sister Joey, the Wool Pooh. He goes crazy and sees angels but then gets saved by Byron. Later, two men dropped a bomb on a church where Joey was going to Sunday school. Kenny goes into shock and runs into the church and sees the Wool Pooh again. Joey turns up to be safe, for she wasn't in the church at the time. They go home and Kenny feels ashamed that some kids in the church got killed.
Byron tells him that it is all right and Kenny stops thinking about it. He finds out the Wool Pooh is just his imagination but knows that the death of four little girls in the church bombing in Birmingham, 1963, was real.

I think this is an interesting book. I had to read it in my class. It was the first book we read about African Americans. The story takes place the same year my mother was born.
