Ian Tyson, Kreesha Turner, Cam Penner, Tegan and Sara...
If you ever had any doubts about the health of Alberta's music scene, this week's Key of A should wipe them away. I think the right expression for this is "embarrassment of riches."
We've got two excellent debuts:
Alex Vissia from Edmonton -- up till now you've heard her as one third of the Vissia Sisters (a.k.a. Plain Janes.) Now she's got her own full-length solo release, A Lot Less Gold. And, we'll take a first listen to a new indie rock band from Calgary called Brocade, and their debut release, Like You Were Here.
Then, we'll dip into the very polished, warm sound of Cam Penner's new album, (his 4th full length, and first self-produced) Gypsy Summer. And, we'll hear a brand new single from Ian Tyson -- yes, THAT Ian Tyson -- 78 years old and still making music!
We'll end the show with new R&B dance music from Edmonton's Kreesha Turner -- on her 2nd album Tropic Electric she's exploring her Jamaican roots.
And we'll start with the stripped down sound of Tegan and Sara's brand new album, Get Along, recorded in an intimate warehouse in front of 75 fans, friends and family. (If you saw or heard our recording of Tegan and Sara earlier this year at Theatre Junction's Grand in Calgary, you'll have an idea of the special atmosphere those two twins from Calgary create with an up-close-and-personal audience.)
Please help spread the word, and tune in if you can, Saturday 5-6 pm across Alberta on CBC Radio 1; or hear the online stream anywhere, 5-6pm MTN at www.cbc.calgary
