Corb Lund Hits the Cowboy Trail, and other stories...

Lots of new music for you this week on the show. We'll unveil the new road song that Corb Lund wrote for CBC Radio 2's Great Canadian Songquest -- a song inspired by the Cowboy Trail -- also known as Highway 22X South of Calgary.

We'll listen our way through a stack of great new Alberta cds -- everything from Franco-Albertan Marie-Josee Ouimet, to cross-border Alberta-Americana from JR Shore, to Edmonton's "Queen of the Swamp Blues" herself, Kat Danser.

Then we head to the intimate stage of the Engineered Air Theatre where Savk (Stephen van Kampen, former lead singer of the Calgary band Beija Flor) and Craig Schram of the Edmonton band The Provincial Archive, trade songs as part of the 2010 Transcanada Alberta Music Series.

The Key of A Hits the Road!

This is it: the big weekend in Kelowna, BC where the Breakout West Festival and the Western Canadian Music Awards celebrate the best music from our part of the country!

mbfloveep-thumb-200x176-55216.jpgThis week on the Key of A, we'll bring you a special show from Breakout West in Kelowna: Margaret Gallagher is your host for live music recorded at the festival. You'll hear four artists -- one each from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and of, course Alberta -- our own Michael Bernard Fitzgerald takes to the stage!

'Tis the Season... for Music Awards!

It's awards season -- nominees and prize winners recently for the Nobel, Booker, Giller, G.G.'s -- and music is no exception.  Next weekend, it's the Western Canadian Music Awards -- and we'll have a special show, Breakout West, coming to you from Kelowna, B.C. where the awards are being given out. (More on that in next week's post!)

This week's Key of A takes a listen to Alberta WCMA nominees in the Francophone, Contemporary Album, and Songwriter categories, with artists Ariane Mahryke Lemire and multiple nominee Corb Lund.

16-year-old Lucas Chaisson of Cochrane has just been nominated for Young Performer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. CBC was on hand to record Lucas at the 2010 Transcanada Alberta Music Series, and we'll hear that live show on this week's Key of A.

We'll also hear from Fort Macleod artist John Wort Hannam, whose album Queen's Hotel is up for both the Contemporary Album and Roots Solo categories at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Plus, Edmonton-based Asani; their album Listen is in the running for the Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year.
