The Ministry of Environment issued a 24 hour Air Quality Advisory for the Kamloops area at 5:30 PM Tuesday. The advisory has been put in place because there is high concentration of fine particulates in the air. The Environment Ministry says exposure is particularly a concern for babies, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

Ajax mine open house

The company behind the proposed Ajax mine held an open house Tuesday night in Kamloops. Dozens of people came to ask questions to employees of KGHM about the mine or to make their opinions known. Janice Billy is a Secwepmec language teacher who lives in Kamloops part time. She says she is against the mine because it is her peoples responsibility to protect the environment. However many people at the meeting were in favour of the project. Bud Jewel works at a mine in Princeton and wants one in Kamloops so he can work closer to home. Another open house is being held Wednesday at the Kamloops Convention centre beginning at 5 o'clock. The project if approved would see a large open pit copper mine being built just south of city limits near Jacko Lake.
