Ranchers have beef with slaughtering rules

Just who can slaughter beef is in question in B.C. Some ranchers say small slaughterhouses should be easier to open, while others say not so fast (Adrian Wyld/Canadian Press).
Just how animals, especially cattle, should be slaughtered in B.C. is in question.

Last week we told you about a push to make it easier for interior farmers to open up small, less regulated slaughterhouses.

That would let them sell directly to people eating the meat.

Provincial rules right now are pretty strict.

At the same time, owners of larger slaughterhouses say an increase in farmers slaughtering their own meat could crush the large slaughterhouses.
