
A ruling by the Federal Court in Ottawa this week could have a profound effect here on PEI.
The Native Council of PEI represents off-reserve Aboriginal people and has 15-hundred registered members. The Federal Court has ruled that Metis and non-status Indians fall under federal jurisdiction under the Constitution. That means Ottawa must recognize those groups as "indians"... and they are entitled to the same constitutional rights as people living on-reserve.
