Don't put your favourite dinner salads on hiatus until the summer. There's no reason you can't enjoy fresh, crunchy and healthy bowls of salad throughout the winter too. If you choose your ingredients wisely, you can enjoy big salads with great flavour any time of year. All you need to do is make a substitution here and there and use fruits and vegetables that are actually at their best this time of year.

Trying swapping out tomatoes with winter-ripe pears which are just as juicy and even sweeter than tomatoes in August. Add big-flavoured radicchio or endive which taste great year-round. Oranges and mangoes are both at their peak during the winter months, so be sure to add them to the salad bowl and to your dressings too. Hearty cabbage, at the heart of those summer slaws, is a wintertime winner too.
