Why use store bought when you can make it easily at home? This homemade butterscotch sauce is an easy way to make anything from ice cream to shortbread cookies taste even sweeter.
1/4 cup butter
1 cup light brown sugar
3/4 cup whipping cream
1 to 2 tsp. vanilla
Apple wedges, for serving (optional)
Add butter to a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. When butter has melted, add brown sugar. Swirl the pan to combine, do not stir. When brown sugar dissolves, and then starts to bubble and thicken, add whipping cream. Stir. Cook until thick, about 5 minutes more. Stir in vanilla and salt. Serve butterscotch sauce warm with apple wedges, if desired.
Yield: About 1 cup.
