For The Birds: Birdfeed That Suets

Posted by Elke Semerad

Birder and naturalist Jim Wilson shares his special recipe for homemade suet.
listen

RECIPE: Three main ingredients: beef suet or pure lard, peanut butter and raw sunflower hearts.
1. Start by placing two 500-gram bags of raw suet into a large pot and melting them slowly over low heat.

2. Once it's liquid, add about an equal amount of cheap peanut butter, melt that in, and mix the two.

3. Then add about six cups of raw sunflower hearts (available at Bulk Barn or in bags at a bird seed store). Mix them in well.

4. Then take the pot off the low heat and add in a quarter cup of molasses and a quarter cup of white sugar. Mix that in.

5. To thicken up the mixture and add more nutrition, then add a couple cups of black oil sunflower seeds and a cup or two of white millet seed. Mix it all together well before it begins to cool and set.

6. Pour the mixture into a large flat-bottomed pan (I use a roaster) like you would fudge, and transfer it to our freezer to let it freeze solid.

7. Once solid, cut the "fudge" into smaller blocks that fit into wire cages that can be placed outside for the birds.
