New Math For Provincial Grants To Municipalities Hurts And Helps

The province unveiled its new formula for unconditional grants to the municipalities, and there are winners and losers in our region. Saint John will be out nearly $1 million over three years, while St. Stephen will receive $160,000 plus. The mayors join us for reaction.

Professor 'Gobsmacked' By Council's Anti-Prostitution Strategy

Council passed a motion to have the police look into whether charging prostitutes under the "Improper Usage of the Sidewalk" bylaw could work. Leslie Jeffrey is a professor in the History and Politics department at UNBSJ who has done extensive research on the sex-trade in the Maritimes.

Councillor Susan Fullerton says she wants police to be more proactive to get prostitutes off the streets, asking the police force to use some of the city's bylaws to do it. Shirley McAlary is the only councillor to vote against the motion.
