Sistema Progam Comes To City

Earlier this month, we invited you to drop off used musical instruments at our CBC offices here on Main Street. We were collecting them on behalf of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra's Sistema program. It's expanding to Saint John, after  two successful years in Moncton. Sistema is an afterschool program that gives kids who may not normally have the opportunity, a chance to learn a musical instrument. Aaron McFarlane is the Sistema Centre Director in Saint John, he speaks with Steven about the new program here.

Hazen White St. Francis School Gets Facelift

The school library has received a major update over the summer, thanks to the work of volunteers from the Saint John company, Innovatia. Author Tries To Dispel Autism Myths

Autistic children lack creativity, reject affection, almost always suffer from intellectual disabilities. These are just a few of the many beliefs surrounding the disease that affects an estimated 1 out of every 150 Canadians and 1 out of  60 Saint Johners. But these widely held beliefs don't always hold up to examination. Jonathan Alderson works with autistic children and their families to design home-based treatment programs. He's also the author of the new book, "Challenging the Myths of Autism."

No Resolution For West Side Residents

A handful of West side residents are still waiting for a resolution after last nights meeting of Common Council. They were there for what they hoped would be a decision from Council about the proposed west side powerlines. But minutes after sitting down Mayor Ivan Court told the crowd that Council was still in discussion on the issue. Bill Farren is a councillor for Saint John's Ward 1 and was at the meeting last night and joins Steven in studio, just after we hear from West side resident Wendy Cyr.

This Week's Saint Johner Away: Mike Bradley

The next time you weigh fruit on a grocery store scale, you may just think of this week's Saint Johner Away.  Mike Bradley is a physicist who grew up in Millidgeville.  For the past two years, he's worked in Paris at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.  He's been part of an effort to come up with a new way to set the standard for the kilogram. He's Originally from Millidgeville and this week's Saint Johner Away.

The Saint John Ex opens today for another season.  This year's event will have a number of crowd pleasers including a reptile show, dog show and lumberjack demonstration.  And if you look up in the sky, you'll see the Fabulous Wallendas performing their high wire act. Holly Johnson On Charlotte County Tourism

Well, Irene certainly wasn't the only show in town this weekend in Charlotte County, A LOT of people were also talking about Stanley.   On Saturday, the much anticipated Stanley Cup arrived in St. Stephen along with the Assistant General Manager of the Boston Bruins.  It was a huge cause for celebration and hundreds of people lined up for a chance to see the legendary Cup up close.  Our travel and tourism columnist Holly Johnson joins us on the line for one final time this summer from St. Andrews with the latest on that visit and more.

Uptown Shopkeepers On Busker Bust

It's been a bad week for buskers in Saint John. A pair of out of town artists claim they were told by police to stop making their chalk art on the sidewalk... and later in the week, police told a drummer to stop playing because of noise complaints. That same day a man in a gorilla suit was spoken to after reports came in that he was frightening tourists. CBC news reporter Sarah Trainor stopped by some uptown shops yesterday to get reaction to the busker bust.

Bruce Northrup On Potash Mine Near Millstream

The provincial government hopes to announce within the next few weeks which company will get the rights to explore a large potash deposit in the Millstream area, near Apohaqui. The hope is it will eventually lead to construction of a mine on the scale of the one now being built in Penobsquis. Bruce Northrup is New Brunswick's Natural Resources Minister. Staff in his department have been talking to a number of companies.

Saint John Man Swims Northumberland Strait

There's no doubt it's difficult to swim the Northumberland Strait, but not nearly as hard as coping with the loss of a child. In February, Chris Dobbin's five-year old son Jack died suddenly from the flu. Since then, the Saint Johner and his family have set up an organization to help kids with special needs, called the Jack in the Clouds Foundation. Chris Dobbin swam the Strait from New Brunswick to PEI yesterday to raise money for the foundation.
