Why does lumber rot if you leave it in the ground, but potatoes don't
Lumber rots because it is dead, and no longer producing chemicals and micro-organisms that would keep it alive if it were still a tree. Potatoes are supposed to be underground and are able to store their own food to stay alive.

What would happen if we removed the locks from the Panama Canal?
If you removed the locks, the content of the Gatun Lake would flow into the ocean. Once the lake level dropped sufficiently, the water would flow into the Chagres River
