The Cape Breton Island Film Series
Thursday, September 24, at the Cape Breton Island Film Series: "Sugar"
Algenis Perez Sotoa stars as Dominican pitcher Miguel 'Sugar' Santos, who claws his way from a training camp in San Pedro de Marcos, DR, to a tryout with single-A team in Bridgetown, Iowa. Most of the curveballs are off the field. Béisbol serves as unobtrusive background to a more familiar film series theme: the immigrant's single-minded but risky quest for a better life. Says the New York Times, "The film's optimism arises from its rarest and most thrilling quality, which is its deep and humane honesty."
"Sugar" plays one show only, 7 p.m., Thursday, September 24 at the Empire Theatre,
325 Prince Street, Sydney.
Season passes are $80. - single seats $9. - students $6.
