Martin MacDonald

Martin MacDonald took up the bow long before he picked up a baton. He grew up in Ironville, Cape Breton, where he was steeped in the Celtic tradition but it was a love of classical music that won out when he chose a career.

Martin MacDonald recently wrapped up a three year tenure as resident conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia. Last year, he received the Jean Marie Beaudet Award from the Canada Council for the Arts. He's been an associate conductor of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. In 2008, he was one of only two Canadians invited to an International Conducting Competition in Barcelona, Spain.  (runs 15:18)
