The Branded Entertainment Development Initiative

CBC calls on marketers and independent producers to collaborate on multi-platform strategies and partnership opportunities with CBC's daytime and afternoon programming schedule

CBC announces the creation of The Branded Entertainment Development Initiative, a unique opportunity for marketers and independent producers interested in collaborating on CBC's daytime programming schedule. It will provide the chance to be part of the creation and development of new daytime programs that incorporate strategic partnerships with outside brands, in an effort to create opportunities that go beyond traditional broadcast avenues.

"We know there are strong ideas already percolating out in the Canadian independent production communities that would fit well with our existing lifestyle and cooking shows," said Jennifer Dettman, head of Factual Entertainment, CBC Television, "We look forward to hearing more from the industry and providing a platform for brands and products to be integrated seamlessly and organically into our programming."

Announced today at the inaugural BCON Expo presented by Strategy and Playback
magazine, The Branded Entertainment Development Initiative will be managed and
developed through a combined effort of CBC's Studio & Unscripted team and the CBC
Revenue Group Client Marketing department. The full criteria and details of the new initiative will be released April 5, on CBC's Independent Producers website.

"It is extremely rare for marketers and their brands to be at the table while a project is in this stage of development - we are thrilled to be offering this 'first of its kind' opportunity to the Canadian marketing and advertising community," said Gaye McDonald, director of Client Marketing, CBC Revenue Group.

• Daytime afternoon programming (strippable M-F)

• Built and developed with 'brands/brand categories' in mind . Please note, CBC is not asking producers to approach brands - we will provide the partnership and are looking to the independent production community for their best creative concepts.

• Hours or half-hours, studio-based or field-based with limited local travel

• Complements and matches the tone of CBC's existing afternoon lifestyle talk and cooking shows (ie: bright, engaging, informative, fun)

• Subject matter that is appropriate for the CBC and relevant to a family audience with slight female skew, 25-54

• Includes multi-platform strategies beyond traditional broadcast avenues

• Programming that not only entertains audiences but also can unite them in a national conversation or collective experience

• Subject matter that we are not considering include dating, international travel, wilderness adventure, exercise shows and docusoaps

Who We Are

Kids' CBC champions Canadian kids and their families by making accessible on all platforms interactive content which is focused on the "whole child". We connect directly with our audience, and partner with parents to reflect back to kids the rich diversity of peoples and places that make up Canada today.

Our focus on the "whole child" means that we go beyond curriculum and look for shows which encourage children's development in the areas of creative expression, socio/emotional intelligence, cognitive learning (e.g. numeracy, literacy, problem solving, science and technology), physical development and awareness of themselves and the world around them.

Our need for shows in these different areas varies depending on what we have on air and in production - it is recommended that producers familiarize themselves with our programming block and interactive sites to understand what we already have and what we might need.

What We Are Looking For

In addition to what is presented below, types of shows we are specifically looking for include:

A really strong show for 4-7's that can air in the early morning that appeals to preschoolers and 7 year olds alike. Maybe a dramedy for that age, perhaps a narrative. But looking to fill the early morning slot with strong shows that will attract kids of a broader range than our pure preschool

School aged: Always interested in strong interactive properties with potential for a series of shorts.

In preschool, we get the least amount of pitches in the area of early science (all sciences). Also interested in shows that are under the umbrella of "physical development" and "dramatic play".

Pre-School, mornings
Target Age: 2-6 yrs

We are looking for child-centered programs and interactive projects that:

Are highly entertaining and developmentally appropriate to our age target;

Have clear and well - executed educational goals that support the "whole child" in the areas of creative expression, socio/emotional intelligence, cognitive learning (e.g. literacy, numercy, problem solving, science and technology), physical development and awareness of themselves and the world around them;

We strive for gender equality to be reflected in our programming, therefore, it is important for you to keep this in mind when submitting your proposal to us. It is essential to connect to preschoolers with an equal representation of both male and female characters (note that there is a disproportionate number of male driven shows on air worldwide at this time, and the majority of the pitches we receive are with male leads). This is not to suggest change Mike to Michelle in your pitch, but rather in the development of show ideas, that you consider this imbalance;

Are full of engaging, memorable characters;

Tell great stories;

Encourage kids to think and do;

Are tied to a book or an appropriate, well-established brand;

Show outstanding production value (art design, music and casting);

Are unique and have a great hook that sets it apart from other projects

Relate to Christmas (please forward all such pitches to Michael Serafini (michael.serafini@cbc.ca)

Saturdays and "Preschool Plus"
Target Age: 4-9

We are looking for child-centered programs and interactive projects that:

Appeal to preschoolers but also children in the early elementary grades;

Are highly entertaining;

Are full of engaging, memorable characters;

Tell great stories;

All genres: 2D, 3D animation, live action;

Less obviously education than pure preschool shows, but still with some level of educational content, whether it be direct (i.e. a game show) or more subtle (pro-social content);

Pushing the envelope in animation or design- we love shows with a fresh and original look.

School-age

We have limited financing available for school-age programming therefore, we looking for pitches with creative financing models.

We are always interested in strong interactive properties with potential for a series of broadcast shorts.

Interactive

We are looking for:

Engaging content that fits under our overall Kids' CBC strategy;

Is a unique approach to interactive or game development;

Is age appropriate and aims to maintain a preschooler's attention;

Is built within our Kids CBC parameters.

We are interested in:

Projects that have been developed with both television and interactive in mind;

All genres: 2D, 3D animation, live action, hybrid, puppets etc.

We are also interested in content for our Parent's site, let us know if you have a blog.

A brief synopsis;

Creative outline detailing the programming concept;

Information regarding talent, guests and/or individuals/companies affiliated with the project;

An estimated budget;

An idea of the target audience;

A fully executed release form. Unfortunately, Children's and Youth cannot review materials unless accompanied by a completed release form.

Due to the volume of proposals submitted, we will only set up meetings for projects once we have reviewed materials, and if there is significant interest on our part.

What if you are not a director, writer or producer?

CBC welcomes proposals from all Canadians.
WHO WE ARE:

As the national public broadcaster we believe we can be most effective by doing what we do best in terms of feature films- providing a national showcase for them on our airwaves.

Our commitment to filmmakers, producers and distributors remains. In addition to our current 8pm timeslot, in 2012 CBC launched "Summer Saturday Movies" a new 9pm dedicated timeslot on Saturdays, showcasing a more diverse set of stories than what we could before.

We will also continue to air Canadian Reflections, a series of 20-30 minute short films from up and coming Canadian directors.

THE AUDIENCE:

A broad audience from all regions, cultures, walks of life and ages including multi-generational viewers who gather together to watch movies, audiences interested in seeing feature films they've heard a lot about, or who already enjoyed them in theatres and want to catch them again on tv with family and friends.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA:

For the 8pm timeslot, films must be no more than 90 minutes long for a two-hour commercial slot. These films should have recognizable themes, stories, stars or an "even" feel and broad appeal.

The 9pm Saturday summer slot, which will begin in 2012, is ideal for films that are edgier or more controversial, but they must still have recognizable, themes, stories and stars.

In short, we are putting our audiences first, acquiring films that work well on television, have a broad appeal and are promotable.

Our Programming and Schedule

bold is Canada's destination for performing arts, edgy drama and unique, live sports on the digital tier.

bold's programming promise comes from a unique blend of offerings. Our Primetime schedule comprises a focused, sophisticated mix of shows from three pillars of programming.

Arts:

Our own original production of Q with Jian Ghomeshi, Jazz performance specials, Winnipeg Comedy Fest, East Coast Sessions, and the amazing Live From Abbey Road are just a few of our properties.

Edgy, sophisticated drama:

bold's primetime schedule presents a unique blend of Canadian and foreign drama and comedy series found nowhere else. We have several exclusive series from the UK like: the award winning series Skins, Whites, Psychoville, No Heroics and Mutal Friends. Coming this fall, the critically acclaimed black comedy Gravity, and the hilarious series from Starz-Party Down.

Sports:

Live sports programming continues to be a big draw on bold - this summer, the exclusive coverage of the Calgary Stampede, equestrain events from Spruce Meadows, and coming next winter: world cup skiing, championship curling, snow-boarding, cross country skiing and figure skating.

CRTC regulations require bold to air 80% Canadian content throughout the day and in Primetime.

Acquisitions and Commissions

Our programming inventory is built almost entirely on acquired programming, but we do commission projects from time to time. Our annual commissioning budgets are related to our success in the market place: the more success we have in selling the channel, the more programming we are able to produce.

One-hour documentaries that focus on the arts and limited series about artists and performers are considered for production. Subject matter should be of interest to Canadian audiences. The stories should follow a resolved and well thought out treatment and be executed with solid production values.

The Deal

While we are not commissioning any original productions at present, we generally expect a 6-year licence term on commissioned projects. bold does not currently have a CTF (Canadian Tax Fund) envelope but we do expect producers to seek out other available federal and provincial tax credits. We welcome funding from other organizations such as provincial agencies & educational networks, the National Film Board of Canada, and other specialty channels as well as CBC's French-language networks (SRC & RDI).

Infrequently, we are open to second window deals with other broadcasters, but will insist on a substantial exclusive first window for our projects . We'll also consider taking second windows on some films where appropriate. License fees for acquisitions will be in line with other Canadian cable & specialty channel licenses.

Each arts-based documentary must be based on thorough and documented research and a realistic budget, financing and production plan. To enhance the strength of the films we commission we may provide funding for development. The first step to a development commitment is the presentation of a concise summary of the project, a schedule, budget and financing scenario for the development phase, and identification of the key creative participants.

When the development process is complete, we expect to receive a full treatment, production budget, production schedule, financing scenario, confirmation of key creative participants, a diversity plan and in most cases, a short trailer or promo. The full proposal will then be assessed as a potential commission.

Our Programming and Schedule

CBC's digital channel documentary is Canada's premiere television service dedicated to documentaries - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our schedule presents important, compelling documentaries from Canada and around the globe.

Our Programming

documentary focuses on a wide scope of topics and presents a dramatic blend of styles and formats. While films that focus on social issues and the human condition play a key role in our primetime schedule, the channel presents many specific programming stands: history, technology, and the natural world and more. CRTC regulations require documentary to air 75% Canadian content throughout the day and in Primetime.

Our programming lineup includes character-driven docs that provide relevant, compelling insight on important issues that relate to our lives; the places we live and the people we know: politics and crime, adventure and injustice, recreation and religion, performance, poverty and poetry. Stories of individual triumph and social unrest told through a strong narrative voice - sweeping epic tales and personal human journeys.

Our Schedule

The Primetime schedule presents a varied and eclectic mix of documentary subjects and is represented in several strands and anthologies across the grid. Our Focus anthology presents a strong and vibrant lineup of independently-produced Canadian one-hour documentaries.

Doc Nation includes award-winning one-hour foreign docs from independent filmmakers and production companies around the globe. Several feature-length slots focus on Canadian and World docs - important, critically acclaimed festival titles and incisive POV docs from some of the best documentary makers anywhere. Through our partnership with the NFB, documentary also acquires more than 50 National Film Board titles a year - The NFB slots airs 3 nights a week on documentary and provide a comprehensive view of the world through Canadian eyes.

We are less likely to support documentaries about wildlife, technology, sports and history. Social issue and the human condition are targets for us. Our commissions must be universal in scope and be relevant to our audiences over the duration of the licence. Execution should be clean, arguments and resolutions clear. Stories should be well researched and supported.

Who We Are

Doc Zone is about our world, our journey. It explores the forces and trends that shape our generation. Its story mandate is wide: from the broad sweep of economic, political and social changes that impact our lives to the deeply personal and intimate stories of family and relationships, Doc Zone always has our viewers at the heart of the matter. Our documentaries are evocative, appealing and visually stunning, presenting a panoramic view of what matters most to Canadians.

Doc Zone airs Thursday nights at 9 PM on CBC Television, and also airs on CBC News Network. The series features both independently produced documentaries and CBC in-house productions.

How To Work With Us

Your proposal should be as complete as possible, and should clearly outline story focus, themes and characters. Each proposal should be accompanied by information about your creative team, production company, and if possible, financing structure. If there is interest in your proposal, you may be asked for additional information. We will respond within 4-6 weeks.

Funding

The CBC pays a license fee that is a percentage of the approved budget. This license fee will trigger the various funding agencies and other sources of financing available to producers across Canada. We do not participate in projects that have NGO financial backing.

Co-production

Normally, we are the first window broadcaster. We engage in productions with independent Canadian producers in conjunction with the Canadian Media Fund. The CMF has provisions for international co-productions, so occasionally we do engage in international co-productions subject to the quality of the story, Doc Zone requirements, the production personnel and the relevance to our viewers.

HD

Doc Zone is the flagship documentary series of CBC Television. As such we require the highest technical standards. All documentaries must be shot in High Definition. Our typical production window is 6 months to a year, but timely subjects may require a quicker turnaround.

What We Are Looking For

Doc Zone's story mandate is broad: from the collapse of the financial markets and a portrait of the RCMP in crisis, to the drop in male birthrates and how to divorce and not wreck the kids.

Doc Zone is intelligent and edgy, but at all times its stories must be accessible, popular and pertinent to a broad prime-time audience.

Although it is diverse in its subjects, it is unified in style. Doc Zone's style is a briskly- paced, well-written journalistic narrative that always seeks the human drama, and builds around human stories. Doc Zone has a single presenter who narrates each episode and the show follows a multi-act dramatic documentary structure.

Doc Zone episodes are all originally produced for the series, drawing on the best staff and independent documentary producers and directors.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are actively interested in finding, developing, producing, co-producing and offering the strongest and most original comedic properties for conventional and digital delivery. In other words, we are interested in ideas that are unique, compelling, entertaining and, most importantly, very funny.

Our current development priorities are scripted half-hour series for 8:00PM and 8:30PM for conventional broadcast during weekday time slots. We are looking to reach a broad 25+ audience.

We will consider all forms and styles of comedy, including single-cam, multi-cam, in-studio, sketch and standup. However, our current focus is on finding single-camera, contemporary comedies that are grounded in reality. We want programs with relatable settings, scenarios, themes and stories which feature entertaining but realistic characters. Humour should be generated from small everyday stories and character. We want our comedies to reflect a world that is familiar to, and will resonate with, a broad Canadian audience. Ideally, we are looking for episodic shows that can run for 13 episodes per season, for multiple seasons.

TV Comedy has a special responsibility to work alongside independent producers and creators in Canada. To that end, we look forward to having the opportunity to consider your ideas as we work toward making this your first port of call for new, popular, distinct, relevant, and funny Canadian comedies. We have a particularly strong interest in continuing our commitment to regional voices and production.

Submissions may take the form of a pitch document, bible, outline, treatment or script. Proposals should consider the schedule, audience, personality and priorities of the network.

What should be included in my submission?

While there is no formal set of requirements on what should be included in a proposal, it is important to ensure that as much information as necessary is provided to portray a complete picture of your vision, while keeping the volume of material to a minimum. Our scripted programming department reviews over 1,000 comedy proposals, scripts and pitches every year, so shorter materials (three to five pages) are preferred.
