A Tribute to Frank Loesser

loesser_250.jpgThis week join Margaret Gallagher for an encore performance from CBC Studio One. Last summer on the anniversary of Frank Loesser's 100th birthday, some of Vancouver's finest musicians paid tribute to his amazing career. This American composer and songwriter left us with over 800 wonderful songs including hits like Luck be a Lady Tonight and Heart and Soul along with Broadway musicals like Guys and Dolls. We'll have a special concert by the Mike Allen Quartet, featuring singers Karin Plato and Adam Thomas.

Open Air

This week in the Hot Air time slot comes the first of 2 shows highlighting the CBC Vancouver Musical Nooners series. http://www.cbc.ca/bc/community/blog/

"Open Air" hosted by Radio 3's Grant Lawrence will feature music by the young, rootsy, pop band, Redgy Blackout. The Sojourners (pictured) bring an impressive gospel blues sound to the show and a brand new Latin band called Locarno is profiled in their maiden voyage on CBC Radio. Led by Juno award winning guitarist and singer, Tom Landa, Locarno creates a fresh and authentic sound that you won't want to miss.

Incidentally, if you love to show your appreciation for good music in a vocal way. Give us a shout...literally. Attach your best mp3 formatted whoop or holler into an email and send it along to Open Air. We promise to include your creative vocalizations in our upcoming show on August 13.Whoo hoo! openair@cbc.ca

Evan Arntzen

Our guest will be saxophonist, clarinetist and singer Evan Arntzen. He learned how to play New Orleans jazz from his grandfather, Lloyd Arntzen, at the age of seven. Now in his twenties, Evan is a jazz force to be reckoned with. He's part of the award-winning October Trio and the Amanda Tosoff Quartet. And that's just for starters. We'll catch up with very busy Evan Arntzen on Hot Air, this Saturday afternoon.
