Episode 8

Hope and Betrayal

Joey Moss
His name may not be revered in the manner of Gretzky, Messier or Kurri, but Joey Moss is one of the most beloved members of the Edmonton Oilers.

Born with Down syndrome, Moss in 1985 charmed a young Oilers superstar who happened to be dating Moss's sister, Vicky, a local singer. At the behest of Wayne Gretzky, Oilers president Glen Sather gave Joey a job as a dressing room attendant, a post he has held ever since.

Often called the "hardest working guy" on the team, Moss has become a source of inspiration for the Oilers, who christened their annual intrasquad game the "Joey Moss Cup." From his spot behind the team bench, Moss can be seen singing along enthusiastically to the Canadian anthem before every Oilers home game.

Moss has served as the honourary chairperson for the annual fundraising walk put on by the Down Syndrome Society of Edmonton and was recently presented with the NHL Alumni Association's Seventh Man Award for dedication and service behind the scenes.
