NHL president
Clarence Campbell explains why Vancouver was denied an expansion franchise in 1967.
When the NHL announced after the 1966-67 season that it would expand by six teams, Vancouver figured to be one of the cities at the top of the list to receive a new franchise. But due to a variety of factors – including the city's unwillingness to build a new arena and the league's desire to tap into the lucrative U.S. television market – Vancouver was passed over in favour of six American candidates. Canada's largest western city would have to wait until 1970 – when the expansion Canucks began play - to finally land an NHL team.
