Heartland’s record setting 125th episode

Posted on Oct 16, 2014

Boy, have I been waiting a long time to write this!

And I'm going to go into extended detail on the head-butt heard across Canada, which is a startling part of the preview for this Sunday’s new episode of Heartland - “Secrets and Lies,” (Watch the preview video here -- and come back to the site tomorrow to watch the first scene!)... but first I want to brag a little, on behalf of the CBC and on behalf of everyone who has worked on television’s favourite family drama.

For those of you who are unaware (fanfare please), this Sunday’s episode is the 125th episode of Heartland, making it the longest running one-hour scripted series in Canadian television history!!!! CBC had a very popular series - a law firm drama entitled “Street Legal,” that in November 1994 aired its 124th and final episode of its eighth and last season.

It has taken 8 years, but the Alberta-based series which has been a mainstay of the family hour (7:00pm - 8:00pm Sunday evenings) is now the new record holder, and the series will conclude its eighth season having aired 139 (count ‘em) episodes.

So it's a source of pride for the producers, the actors, the crew and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to have crafted and shown a series which has lasted as long as Heartland has.

Sure the quality has been there, but the reason Heartland is still around can be distilled down to two words - THE FANS. If there’s no audience, there just ain’t no show, as the song lyrics go, and for 124 Sundays fans have turned on their television sets across the 6 time zones that make up this vast country and settled in to watch the adventures of the Fleming Bartlett clan.

On behalf of everyone involved in the series - thank you, Canada, for your help in keeping this series running.

And keep running it does this Sunday, October 19, with “Secrets and Lies,” the record setting episode that's going to make a lot of people happy and it will make a lot of people very nervous as it sets several things in motion that will continue to unfold over the remaining fourteen episodes of Heartland’s 2014-2015 season.

I have a huge advantage of knowing what is going to happen - not just in this episode but for the rest of the season - and if you are a little concerned about the path the series has been taking, don’t be! And that’s a Blog Whisperer guarantee.

Of course, that being written, there's no way I'm going to spoil the rest of the season for anyone. I will however, go into detail a bit on what you can expect this Sunday, when “Secrets and Lies” premieres at 7:00pm (7:30NT) on CBC.

This Sunday, Prince Ahmed Al Saeed (guest star Jade Hassouné) returns to Heartland, where he makes an unwelcome declaration and Amy is forced to deal with the devastating consequences. The Prince has been used to getting his own way, but there are some things that all the riches in the world cannot buy. Victoria Pratt is also back as a guest star too!

Meanwhile, a dire animal crisis at the Reserve eerily parallels Ty’s personal life when he realizes that some things just can’t be saved.

Still stinging from Katie’s pre-school rejection, Lou’s insistence that a specialist test her daughter brings an unexpected result. And Georgie realizes she needs her own trick riding horse in order to keep up with her nemesis Olivia.

You're going to hear some things said that you have wanted to hear for a long time. There is also sadness, both physical and emotional, which is necessary for the storylines to continue where they must lead. And most of all there is family, being there for one another when the going gets tough.

I personally loved this episode. The acting is top notch and the script by Heather Conkie is superbly directed by Bruce McDonald.

“Secrets and Lies” is one you will not want to miss, for it sets in place many things that will be realized by season’s end.

Heartland’s milestone 125th episode. Buckle in and watch it Sunday and know that the episodes that follow (126 - 139) will be going to places never before seen on Heartland, all possible because of what is about to happen.

After you see it make sure to comment below. You know I always love to read your thoughts.

There will be new Heartland episodes for the next 3 Sundays (thank goodness!) so you will find me here again next Thursday, writing about episode 805 - the 126th episode of Heartland.

While you wait for Sunday's brand new episode, make sure you check out this really cool clip of Alisha Newton behind-the-scenes of last week's episode, talking about releasing the owl into the wild. And, there's also a brand new entry of Lou's Blog ("Moms The Word") this week, where she (the character) writes about why she thinks Katie's learning needs are such a high priority for her.

So that's all for now! Until then I remain - as always - obediently yours.
