THE OFFICIAL HEARTLAND BLOG

99 + 1 = 100 Episodes of Heartland

The slap... is back

If you've been with us from the beginning you've seen (and I'm guessing enjoyed) 99 1-hour episodes of Heartland.

It's rare -- remarkably rare -- for an English language Canadian 1-hour drama to reach the century mark, but that milestone is happening in 10 days time, when Episode 615 - "After All We've Been Through" - premieres on CBC Television. [Click through for more blog]

This Sunday (Feb. 24) will be a repeat episode from earlier this season, which explains the photo of Chase Powers above with Amy. Why? Well, there's a little Hollywood celebration known as the Academy Awards going on and like the Super Bowl and Grey Cup before it, this is a Sunday night event which attracts millions, and it makes no sense running anything against the Oscars, especially Heartland's 100th episode.

So next week it will have to be.

However...

...if you CAN tune in to CBC this Sunday at 7:00pm (7:30NT) you can learn about an exciting contest that someone in Canada is going to win and it could be you! Just watch your television screens and get prepared to enter!

Of course there's also this Sunday's repeat episode, which is Episode 607 - "Life is a Highway," written by Leila Basen and directed by Jim Donovan.

Besides being the episode where Chase Powers (played deliciously by Torrance Coombs) returns, this is one of two Heartland scripts recently nominated for a prestigious WGC (Writers Guild of Canada) screenwriting award, in the category of TV Drama. The other script is Episode 515 - "Breaking Down and Building Up," by Heather Conkie.

Of the six finalists in the category Heartland was the only production to receive multiple noms. (Yeah baby!!!)

The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) represents more than 2,000 professional English-language screenwriters in Canada. These are the creators who write the distinctly Canadian entertainment we enjoy on our televisions, movie screens, radios and digital platforms.

Each writer on a Canadian show can submit one script. The writers' names are removed from the scripts which are then sent to a panel of jurors - other WGC screenwriters who write in the category that they are judging. Each judge gives the script a mark. The ones with the highest marks move forward to the next round of judging until there are five or six finalists. It really is a selection by the writers' peers.

Leila Basen has been nominated twice before, for the YTV series "Mental Block" which she co-created and co-wrote with David Preston (another Heartland writer!)

Leila tells me, "I was really thrilled by the nomination because it's always great to have your hard work validated by your peers. But the best validation of all is the continuing success of the series. Working on Heartland is a collaboration from start to finish and it allows me to combine my two passions, writing and horses."

As for Heather Conkie, who is also the Showrunner on Heartland, her past experiences with the WGC awards has seen her win this same TV Drama category in 2000 for an episode of "The Artists Specials" entitled "Degas and the Dancer."

And in 2010 she received the 4th Annual Showrunner Award for "exceptional leadership and creative vision."

Heather says, "As Heartland's showrunner, I'm incredibly proud of not just one nomination, but two. It's a first for Heartland at the WGC awards. Writing the show is reward enough but being recognized by your peers is fantastic."

The 2013 WGC Screenwriting Awards will be held in Toronto at Uniun Nightclub on Monday, April 22nd. I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing good luck to Heather and Leila!

I've been answering many of your questions on Facebook and the next time we have a break from a new episode I'll do the same in here, answering and having fun with some of your questions.

One last thing to note... if you follow Heartland on Twitter, follow us on VINE too, as we'll also be sharing some cool stuff leading up to the 100th episode there too!

In the meantime I'll leave you with a production photo from Heartland's 100th episode, of director Stephen Reynolds blocking a scene with Rhys Ward and Kaitlyn Wong Leeb, two of season 6's most impactful characters.

The slap... is back

You know next week's 100th Heartland episode is going to be heavy, and that was evident from the seriousness of all the cast on set during filming.

The slap... is back

Okay, maybe it wasn't serious all the time on set! :)

That's it for me this week. If you can tune in on Sunday you will watch Amy do this again to Chase -

The slap... is back

AND you will learn about the very exciting new contest which is going to result in a once in a lifetime prize for a very lucky Canadian family.

Nuff said!

Until next week I remain obediently yours...

No horse would tolerate a 2-legged like Jeremy. Mine would put him on the ground before he got his right foot in the stirrup. No doubt in my mind that he killed Buckingham, not Cassandra. She seems pretty immature, but must be smart enough to know her career is done if she participated in a criminal act like that, not to mention covering it up. She's gone from vet school if she even directly knew about it. Jeremy likely did it when she was napping or distracted by something else. The way he was eye-ing the med vials in the clinic fridge makes it pretty obvious that he was checking-up on his work. Maybe the vial he was used is missing, or he used one and re-filled it with something else. But that would take time to do and you'd think Cassandra would notice something like that. Get that guy in jail and throw away the key for every equine- and human- kind's sake.

I have a question for BW, are Amy And Ty going to have a baby together? I have been wondering that ever since Ty and Amy got engaged. The other question i have for you is, when will Ty and Amy's wedding happen. In my opinion i thought that after a few episodes that they would start to plan the wedding and all the other stuff. My third and final question is, will Ashley EVER be coming back because it seems to me ever since you know Ashley and Caleb broke up and got divorced it seemed like Ashley never came back.

Great show last week.

It will be interesting to see what direction the writers take. Hopefully next season Lou and Caleb get married. It would be an interesting story arch if Peter dies in an airplane crash then Lou and Caleb. Going through a divorce would be too hard on the fans.

Thanks again to the camera crew; unsung heroes; I wish I could afford them for my Indie movies.

The hairdresser for Lou did a very fantastic job on her hair with the curls. Grand old Hollywood era style; very classy. I will use it as an example to my actresses.

Hello Blog Whisperer,

Thank You for another AWESOME BLOG!!! As always, really.

Congratulations to Heartland, all of the cast and the crew and the CBC for this show continuing on. Seriously. This show and the people who work on it deserve it to and more so. Why? Because when I state that this world needs this show it is the truth because it encourages others to be there for each other, the land and the animals all around us.

It does indeed make sense that at times the show doesn't air because of other things being televised. Think about it as a way to think longer about the last episode that you have watched.

As I don't have access to the CBC on tv - Good Luck to all who enter and may it make a person's or a family's day.

That is truly AWESOME that Heartland has received multiple nominations and I would like to say Congratulations to both Heather Conkie and Leila Basen on each of your nominations. Also, Good Luck to each of you. I can happily say that I have enjoyed watching the material that you have shared when it comes to Heartland.

I must admit that I honestly would like to follow Heartland on Vine however I am literally and seriously unable to do so. However I would like to say Congratulations for having another medium to send information to your viewers.

I must say BW that I ALWAYS enjoy the pictures that you share with all of us and I can't help but like the picture of Graham. AWESOME!!!

Hmmm....that reminds me of another set of pictures on a previous blog of yours BW. (; It just does. Really. (: (: (:

I won't always end my comments this way however this time I will.

Sincerely and Respectfully,

Tanya

I have a good friend who recently lost her sister. One of the MAJOR things she says has helped her through her grief, has been watching Heartland. I suggested she borrow my Season 1 DVD just for a distraction and some positive and uplifting entertainment, and since then she has successively borrowed Seasons 2-5 each week during the weeks since and is very grateful to the whole creative team of Heartland for not only providing a boost and distraction, but also some good life-lessons and comfort. I have to admit as well that if I think I've had a tough day for whatever usually dumb reason, watching one of my favorite Heartland episodes is always a good tonic for improving my mood and perspective on life. Yes, Heartland is theoretically "just a TV show," but it so beautifully and heart-warmingly tells stories that accurately and eloquently reflect real life experiences that most people have had in their lives, that it really is "a LOT more" than just a TV show. Even just sharing a part of the lives of the Heartland horses is a soul- and heart- healer.

Last week’s episode was awesome, I loved the Buckingham story line. I`m thinking Cassandra is in on it, because there is no way Jeremy would be able to know how much of that drug it would take to kill a horse and where to inject it. Plus how could she have not caught him? Or maybe Jeremy was using Cassandra to get what he wanted, like he used Mallory. On the other hand, the Lou and Caleb storyline really confused me. At first I thought Caleb really just wanted to help, because he saw himself as Peter and Lou as Ashley, and didn`t want the same thing to happen to their marriage, but now I have a different theory… I`m thinking the guy who plays Peter is leaving the show, but Lou and Peter`s marriage will not end badly because BW already said he wouldn`t do anything to hurt his family. So i`m thinking Peter is going to die at the end of the season in a huge cliff hanger, maybe in a plane crash? This could be the big cliff hanger, plus it`s not very Heartlandish to have Caleb acting weird and kissing married women, it`s a family show, not a soap. There has to be more to this storyline than just a kiss… there has to be some point to the kiss, thinking Caleb and Lou might be together next season. (Not saying their gunna have an affair, that would be WAY to much like a soap, and not at all a family show!!!) However, I think that Lou and Scott should have been together from the start, never really cared for Peter`s character as much.
Anyways, awesome job cast and crew!!!

In my opinion, it would be best if Amy and Tys wedding was a season finale. That way, they could have their honeymoon in between the seasons and come back to the ranch in the next season.

I think it would be stupid to have Lou and Caleb get married. They are from two totally different worlds and are two completely different people!

Hey,BW, I have some questions:
a)What happened to the heartland calender? You know, the one that told us when the new episodes were airing.
b)What happened to Peter? He was there in episode 12 and then just disappeared when 13 came out, he wasn't even in 13.
c)Why does Ty give Caleb the rent for living in the trailer and not Ashley? It is her property, not Caleb's. they got a marriage contract saying it was Ashley's.
And lastly...
d)In age, how far apart are Amy and Lou? 6-10 yrs. I'm guessing, but can I get a exact answer?
Thanks, BW!
~Bobby~

Hey everyone have you seen the new preview thank you so much BW I love watching them even though it kills me to wait til the next episode. I cannot believe Jermey he is annoying I mean holding up a GUN to TY that is not ok i personally would just punch him the next time i saw him and if shoots Ty(must likely her won't) I will go hurt him not the acter but the character. If you are like me and you kinda like it when Ty or Amy gets hurt cause it adds to the whole romance love thing then it wouldn't be so bad if Ty did get shot as long as he doesn't die but I mean Jermey would never win on trial and so Ty would get money and Amy would have to take care of him and stuff like when Tim got shot. Anyway BW you do a good job of making us wait!! after seeing the preview I don't know how I am going to last this week is going to be soo slow. normally I hate mondays but with Heartland I love them!!!!
P.S. i live in the US thats why I can't see them on Sundays.

Hey BW,
On a recent blog, speifically the Jan. 31st one where you answered some peoples questions. One girl asked if Ty's name is actually Tyler and you said it could be many names.

I've been re-watching the seasons and in season 1, episode 9 Ty gets mail from his probation officer "Clint" and on the envelope it's addressed to "Tyler Borden"

So to any of the fans out there that were unsure of what Ty's first name actually is, there ya go. Just thought I would clear it up.

And I cant wait for the next episode!! I hope Jeremy gets what he deserves! :)

Nicki wrote:

I wonder now that Ty is living in the trailer, where does Caleb live? And has a single scene ever been set at Big River Ranch? I mean the house, not riding the fences etc. I know Tim always hangs out at Heartland, but it would have been nice to see the family gather at his house, too. Probably not practical having to maintain another set.

I have always felt a connection with heartland mainly because of Ty, I always wanted to be in his shoes and taken into a good home as he was taken in to Heartland. I know there are a million TV shows and movies where similar things happen but something about heartland really takes me. I wish I could do the things Ty has done in the show but I have a different path. I am getting my credentials in Developmental Service Work, Addictions Counseling, as well as Child and Youth Working. I want to, one day, take of the farm I work at and have a program where I take in at risk teens and put give them a job, money, responsibility, and a stable setting. My friend and I also want to start our own horse camp where I will be starting a horse assisted therapy and he will be taking care of the main section of the overnight horse/ranch style camp. Heartland has changed lives and it is only a TV series. I hope I can follow in the footsteps and change life's through a little more. Thank you for bringing everyone such quality episodes!

This is my absolute favourite show on T.V.! It proves that a show can be captivating for adults of all ages, but still appropriate for children to watch with their parents. The actors are excellent, even the younger ones, the storylines are so interesting and leave you waiting expectantly for the next one (I'm always so disappointed when it's a repeat episode!) And best of all, it's Canadian!

Why is it only played on Sunday evenings? Most shows are repeated at some other time during the week, but not Heartland (except for some channels that go way back in the series) Now that we have a PVR, I can set it, because we are at church on Sunday evening, but occasionally a power outage or some glitch prevents the recording, and I'm so disappointed when that happens. We live in a rural area and our internet is very sketchy, so I can't watch it online.

Keep up the good work, CBC!

I have watched a few Canadian shows such as Road to Avonlea, Wind at My Back, Being Erica, and Bomb girls; all of which in English. What other language do y'all have tv shows in?

peanutstweet,
I would love if Amy and Ty has a baby Ty would make a great dad since he has told us all about his life and what he would do if he was a father. I hope they get married next season that why there is a next season.

BW you mentioned that season 6 ends on a cliffhanger? Is it a good cliffhanger with Amy and Ty or a bad cliffanger and you said that they are happy throughout the whole season but is that to the very last second?? Also if there isn't a season 7(there better be) but if there for some reason isn't is there a backup ending?? Thanks

Hally - You are welcome and the offer will always remain open. Seriously.

Steven - I read what you have shared and I can honestly say that tears started to form in my eyes. I would like to say what you are doing is beyond impressive and what you want to do I love that, I really do. Why do I say that? Because you and your friend are going to encourage children and horses to feel loved and respected. And that FOR REAL makes me cry because it makes me happy that you and your friend want to do that. I know and WITHOUT A DOUBT that this world will be so much better if ALL children know that they are loved and respected. If we ALL learn to connect to our animal friends once more and the nature and the land then love will NEVER/NOT ever leave our hearts again.

From me to YOU AND YOUR FRIEND THANK YOU Steven because you are encouraging love to spread. HATS OFF TO THE BOTH OF YOU!!! And I wish you and your friend all happiness and success in all that you both do and yes this is a serious comment on my part. Really. (:

Marilynn Bowden - In regards to Heartland I really enjoy reading your comments and thank you for sharing them with everyone. I may be able to answer your question in regards to Heartland's episodes airing on Sunday evenings. That is thought to be a time of family and where families are encouraged to spend time together. Sunday evening is thought to be "family night" and one's family can also be their friends too.

In regards to the CBC repeating Heartland during the week as to the reason why, may be because the CBC is stating that Sunday nights mean time for Heartland. Meaning time to forget about the work week for a moment and to enjoy the evening and relax with family, friends, and/or one's own quality time. One night out of the week where one can see things in a positive way once more. And in doing so it can prepare one to be ready for the challenging work week ahead. It is time for reflection and time to appreciate one's own home and one's own country (NO matter where one lives).

Marilynn I hope that I have answered your question and in the event that what I have shared didn't quite have the answer that you were looking for then please feel free to ask BW once more. From me to YOU THANK YOU Marilynn for being a friend, a fan of this gem of a show that we all call Heartland.

Danielle Kugler - We have shows in Canada also in French and there may also be shows in other languages also. Why do I say that? Because Canada is a diverse country indeed. Many people from all over the world visit this country and some decide to make Canada their home.

From me to EACH OF YOU AND EVERYONE who is a friend and a fan of Heartland THANK YOU. It is because of ALL of you that this show Heartland has more stories that are being created and shared with all of us.

May EVERYONE be safe and stay safe ALWAYS. May EVERYONE ALWAYS feel the warmth of love's comfort. (:

i know alot of you don't think this because you want the final episode to be amy and tys wedding but i think the ending of the final episode of heartland ever :'( should be amy riding alone on spartan wearing her normal clothes with spartan in normal western tack and she just rides up to her moms grave and just looks silently without crying close ups and everything fades to black...

Hey BW, I got a question.
Can you make a list with everyone of the cast who's on twitter?
I mean, some are always mentioned on @heartlandoncbc tweets, but for example I have found @jkamlee and @jake__church, but they have never been mentioned. Are they fake accounts then?

My wife and I love this show. We watch it whenever it is on whether it is a repeat or not. Can't wait for Ty to prove his innocence in the death of Buckingham.Hope this show runs as long or longer than Bonanza. Everybody keep up the good work.

Since the most of us are talking about the season 6 finale, I agree with Heather. It would be awesome if it ends like that...
I kinda miss the old story-line, people bring in abused, damaged, scared horses (problem-horses)and Amy fixes them...
Oh, and for those who have twitter : The BW is putting up some previews so you can watch the five first minutes of Heartland. Just saying!
You know, Bw, you're doing great job :)

I love HEARTLAND

My first horseback ride was when I was 5 years old, on the back of a work horse named Pete, my great uncle had, while plowing the fields.
I owned a few horses.
I had to sell them, because I didn't have the money to keep them. It was heartbreaking.

I never stop riding till I had kids and a job.

I found time to go riding once in awhile. But its never like having your own horse.
This show brings me back in time, when I was a young woman.

Please don't hook up Galib and Lou. Just doesn't work. A good writer can come up with tons of side stories about Galib, without going there.
Such a good series though.

Got to spend a good bit of quality time with Amber this past weekend down here in Florida, If you think her character is good, kind and sweet, I can tell you the actual person is 10x sweeter. I can honestly say she is one of the nicest people I have ever met. Thank you for spending time with me, I will never forget it.

Thank you for your kind words. Like Ty I was a troubled teen but once I started at the farm I currently work at I completely did a 180 and really learned how much the country life can change a person. My father, like Ty's, was not around much or in jail, and the rest of my family was not the greatest although we tried. I want to change even the life of one person. One way or another I want to go to Alberta and possibly check out Heartland and what its about. Even though they are just actors and Heartland is just a show, it gives hope, encouragement, and something that is like nothing else these days. Heartland, like the country lifestyle stays true to it's roots and does not fall to the pop sensation type of style. I may possibly change life's when I get things started but Heartland, and even your blog, change life's every day. The heartland symbol is a sun over some mountains... To me that represents everything Heartland is. The mountains being troubled times or some obstacle and the sun rising into a new beginning and a happy ending. I love that this blog is here and allows people the freedom to speak without fear or just to talk to like minded people. Also, and yes, my rant is almost done, I love that you respond to your fans. You show true care to your loyal fans.... Or to be better said, you are loyal to the fans. That is it- My rant is finished, I hope you have a nice day.

The year you brought Heartland to life was the
year my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He used to watch it every Sunday and
the rest of us, my two granddaughters and my son
and I eventually started watching it as well. My
granddaughters were young in 2007 ( 4 and 2) but
in the past four years they have become big fans.
In fact, we have the whole set of DVD's so far and
they watch them over and over. My eldest granddaughter is 10 this year and is completing her 2nd year of riding lessons and will be competing for the second summer beginning in May.
My husband passed away in Dec. 2007 but we all feel his presence when we sit to watch Heartland.
Many more seasons to you all!

Great Job .Love the show and settings.I feel right at HOME there. Never felt like that about any show I've seen before. There are only about 3 shows I watch on tv and "Heartland" is at the top of the list.
I have two grand daughters that look so much like Amy (that could be part of the draw) but enjoy this show immensely.Spending much of my child hood on a farm I enjoyed many of the animals there (horses too);although the horses are not the only ones on a ranch could there be more critters involved, maybe see more of TY's job too.?
A few nights I had this dream about a contest to see behind the secenes then I was in AWE when I heard of this one for the 100th episode. Truly

Keep up the good work. Look forward to each episode.
