THE OFFICIAL HEARTLAND BLOG

One question for... Wanda Cannon

Ask Wanda

As you regular visitors to the Heartland blog know by now, Monday is when I put up a new "Ask an actor from Heartland one question" post. Click though for that and the answers to a couple of YOUR questions...

We kicked things off three weeks ago with Shaun, followed by Graham and last Monday we gave you the opportunity to ask Jessica Amlee (whose answers will be put up tomorrow!) Today you get to ask a question of Wanda Cannon, who portrays Val Stanton, Ashley's mother.

The rules remain the same - you can ask one question only, so be selective and really, try not ask a question someone has already asked! You have until Thursday afternoon to post your question in the comment box at the bottom of the page. We will choose a bunch of them and Wanda will post her answers next week. Ready... set... go!

Also, a couple of other items I'd like to address from recent comments...

A few people were wondering about the outcome of the charity hockey game. The game was a large success despite the very cold weather that prevented some from coming out to see the Heartland cast and crew in action. Over $7,500 was raised for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Calgary, and everyone had a blast. Heartland gave a valiant effort, but lost 13-12 in a shootout. Okay, so maybe it wasn't such a success for the goaltenders.

And at least one of you (I'm looking at you Jenn!) had a quibble about Ty going off to Veterinary school when he hadn't even graduated from high school, let alone done his undergrad. So, Blog Whisperer to the continuity rescue! To address Ty Borden's education - past and present - Ty dropped out of school after grade nine (as everyone knows, he did have a tough childhood.) BUT... he finished high school through correspondence and received his diploma in the last episode of season 2. In episode 305 (this year) he was accepted to a couple of universities. Although it was not spelled out, it's true... you do have to take two years of sciences before taking your veterinarian courses, and these science courses are what Ty was going to be leaving to attend.

I noticed you said "Ty was going to be leaving to attend" I noticed the word was. Is this a forshadowing that Ty won't be attending cause he's dead from the plane crash?

What was the hardest scene to film with Cindy as Ashley? Like with all the emotion and drama between those two, what was the hardest scene to shoot?

You do a GREAT job and i think you are JUST how Val should be!( except you are really nice and you probably don't hurt horses! )

[Blog Whisperer: Please keep on topic, everyone. I'm going to have to start deleting comments that aren't questions for Wanda!]

Hi Wanda. I think you are such a wonderful actor. You really bring the role of Val to life. You and Cindy are a great mother/daughter team. What we really love is when you and Shaun Johnston(grampa jack) have scenes together. You two are amazing together so I guess my question to you is have you and Shaun worked together before and do you think there is any chance that you and Jack will get together on the show.Opps sorry thats 2.

I was on set as a background performer during one of Wanda's scenes where you was angry at Ashley riding in a horse jumping event in season 2, and I must say I was impressed how you "turned on the emotion". Val is gaining warmth in her character, do you prefer to play her with more edge?
Thanks, and I enjoy your work.

I really miss it already and its only been a day:( Anyways, my Question to you is: Do you feel your character Val relates/ portrays you in anyway?? Keep up the great work hope there will be a season 4. :) Thanks so much, Paige :)

Good Day Wanda,

I find your character to be quite complex, on many levels, so..... my question is:

Do you find it difficult or taxing whilst portraying the many diversities of "Val"?

Thank you,
Kimberly L.

Hello Wanda, And Congratulations on playing the part of Val Stanton so great! I love the character that used to portray a very "self indulging" mother (in my out look) that wanted the world, And has been hurt, and has now turned everything for a loop for a second chance but still seeming a little Different. In my opinion. Awesome :D
My Question for you is how do you like working with the younger and older cast as Shaun, Amber, Graham and everyone else including the animals. As well are you happy to be acting in Alberta since you were born in Ontario?

Kristin wrote:

When you have to go from wanda to val what do you do to get into the role I know when I am going to act something out I try get really into the role as if I really am that person and portray it as the character would say it and not me. I only have done a very tiny bit of acting but when i graduate I would love to pursue acting as a career!!

Hey Wanda, I'm a huge fan of Heartland, and I think you play an incredible role on the show - in my opinion you play your role the best out of any other actor on the show, maybe not as popular and well liked as the other characters lol. Anyways, my question for you is, what do you like most about working on Heartland? (I guess that's kind of a broad question, so I don't think it has to be just one thing...)

You do a great job of making Val very realistic, making us love her and hate her all at the same time! Well done! My question for you is: Val's sickness storyline is very emotional, have you ever experienced anything in your life that you could draw from in order to portray these emotions to their fullest? Was this a hard storyline for you to film?

hey Wanda,

thanx for answering all these questions, must be a lot of work. I love how you perform in Heartland although it can't be easy all the time. but you do a really great job.
Well my question for you is: why don't you do horseback riding in the show because you apperantley used to do showjumping when you where young in the show? so you could show ashley how its done without sending her to your coaches.

lot off greats of a belgian girl

Dear Wanda,
I just wanted to say I think you do an excelent job of portraying the self-propeled character Val Stanton. On the show we see you giving alot of "advice" about others riding techniques although we hardly see you riding... so my question is: are you a talented rider yourself? If so do you have horses at home?
Nadine

P.S We love you!

Wow Wanda!
First off I would love to saw you do an amazing job portraying Val. Sometimes I just wanted to strangle her but then she'd do something and make you think maybe she's not that bad! So here is my question: In the beginning of the season you well Val had a medical problem, will they touch base on it any later in the show? also Have you ever ridden a horse in your life and why don't you ride in the show?
Thanks for all you have added to Heartland

Hey Wanda. Just wanted to let you know that you do an awesome job playing Val Stanton. My question is this: what is your behind the scenes relationship with Cindy Busby, knowing that your characters have an... interesting relationship on screen?

Kate wrote:

Hi Wanda,

YOu play your part so well! At first I wasn't too keen on Val, (though you played her character great!) but this season she is really coming out with a better side. How do you think her relationship with her daughter Ashley is going to progress? They seem to be getting along better but things can change.
anyways , keep up with great acting!
Thanks!

Hi Wanda, my question is: Do you find it discouraging at times to play one of the "meanest" characters on Heartland? Afterall, your character is one which is hard to love, and consequently I doubt you get to feel the same loving fan response!

To make everything clear, I do love your character, and think she is one of the most realistic and in-depth ones on Heartland. The show wouldn't be as emotionally intense or realistic without you! Keep up the great work!

I really like the way you pursue Val. She has an on and off personality, which you do really well. I like the scenes with you and Shaun, because I always feel like there's some sort of love connection between the two characters. My question is just that: Even though Jack is with Lisa, do you think Val is interested in him? Or is she just in it for the business that benefits her?

Thanks a billion!

Greetings, Wanda!

I've really been enjoying watching the evolution of Val's character over the past two-and-a-half seasons, so credit goes to you and the writers. Val is the character I love to hate, because one minute I can be appalled at how she can (sometimes) treat Ashley, and the next I can be sympathetic towards her because of her illness. Bravo for portraying Val's complicated personality so convincingly!

My question to you is: What was your reaction when you learned about the plans to saddle Val with serious health issues?

Thank you for taking the time to answer these fan questions.

Wanda...just gotta say that I enjoy watching your performance on Sundays...I agree that there are times when I just want to scream out of frustration and then there are times when I want reach over and hug you. That just shows how well you play the role and I seriously imagine that portraying Val is no picnic and requires a lot of deep digging. So Thank You for you most excellent work! Okay, now my question, I think I'll go out of the norm and ask you something totally rock out different : If you can have dinner with 4 people (dead or alive), who would they be and why?

Hey Blog Whisper do you think that maybe when we have done Q & A with all the cast we could do some with the crew? I think it would be fun to get to know some of the behind the scene people. They contribute a lot of work but arent recognized as much so it would be a cool way to see what the crew does to!!

[Blog Whisperer: That is a GREAT idea Kristin, let me look into it! ]
