Episode 15 - Sunday March 1

Episode 215

Sunday March 1, on an all-new Heartland...

We told you that our fourth-last episode of season two was entitled "Dark Horse", but we may have misled you into thinking that something scary or sinister is going to happen on Heartland. Click through for more!

We refer you to two definitions of what a dark horse is - and both certainly apply to the upcoming new episode:

1) A little-known person: somebody about whom very little is known or who tends to be reticent, especially somebody who subsequently reveals unexpected talents, and

2) In sports or a competition an unexpectedly successful contestant: a little-known competitor who achieves unforeseen success in a race or other sports contest.

So without giving a lot away, we hope you enjoy episode 215, which will reveal more between Ashley and Caleb, Caleb and Amy, Amy and Ty, Ty and Kit, the rivalry between Jack and Tim, and interestingly enough... Val and Caleb.

And another thing that episode 215 has is horses - lots of them! Leila Basen, who along with writing partner David Preston wrote "Dark Horse," sent us the following information:

Back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, a dozen trailer trucks would pull up to the movie barns every day, loading up hundreds of horses for movie and television productions on the back lots of Universal and Warner Bros. That era passed decades ago, and with it, the heyday of the Hollywood cowboys.
But now, horses are thundering across the screen again in "Dark Horse" on CBC's Heartland. And when Lou Fleming decides to resurrect the Hudson Charity Derby, a race that Grampa Jack describes as a knock 'em out, drag 'em down, no holds barred grudge match, the call went out for falling horses, rearing horses and expert stunt men and women to ride them.
Of course, much has changed since the early days when the safety of the horse and rider were often sacrificed to get the shot. Under the expert guidance of stunt coordinator Tom Eirikson and renowned wrangler John Scott, the thrills and spills are carefully recreated for maximum, on-screen excitement, all the while keeping the horses and their stunt riders safe. But it's not just stunt doubles thundering across the foothills of Alberta. During the shooting of "Dark Horse," the cast of Heartland had to cowboy up and learn to become skilled riders in the way that was once second nature to Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and John Wayne.

Here are some photos from this exciting episode. We hope you enjoy it, and come back and post your comments on Monday! Until then...

Oh. Hope Amy & Caleb are getting back together.....[Photo#1 & 9]
Ty & Jack look happy[Photo#7&8]

Looks like a fun-filled revealing episode.

ohhhh wooow , last picture : caleb is doing up his belt and val is standing there ?!!?

OMG - this episode looks so exciting. I am so glad there are going to be more horses this time.

I am also glad this is the first of 4 new Heartland episodes. Yessssssssssssssssss!!!!!

But even though the weather will be better in April it will be a bit gloomy because we have to wait until the fall for season 3 to start.

Oh well - at least there is a season 3. Something to look forward to.

Heartland rocks!!!!!!!! Thanks to everyone who made it and thanks CBC for letting Canada see it.

I'm so excited! :)

I live all the way in New Zealand, and the only way I can watch Heartland is through youtube. :(

Anyone else out there with the same problem?

xoxo
Kelly
p.s. I wonder what happens between Val and Caleb...hmmmm

please reply back

oh no it looks like amy and calub are talking i really want amy and ty to get back to gether and i want calab to leave the ranch!

After listening to Jack and Tim argue about who won what, when and how, Amy should just jump on her Dark Horse,(Spartan) enter the Derby and beat them both.

OMG it looks soooo gd!!!! I CANT BELIEVE I HAVE 2 WAIT AN ENTIRE EXTRA WEEK TO WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Caleb, i hope dark horse refers to Caleb and we get to know him better!!!!!!He is so hot and so much better than ty!!!!!!!!!!

Hope I see lots of Caleb in this episode, he is intriguing and gorgeous, I absolutely will not watch Heartland if Caleb is not is Season three!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BRING IT ON.....I say.....BRING IT ON !!!!!

OMG!!! This is going to be a great episode!!! I really think Ty and Amy are meant to be togeter but i guess it can wait... I do like Kit too though! I think the drak horse will be Scott and he'll win!!!

Can't wait! Keep the episodes coming!!! DVDS would be nice!!

This Episode look very exciting Ty in pic 7 and Ty and jack in pic 8 wow look's really exciting.

This is to Pickles,Mimi and Lily Caleb and Amy are not going to get back together if they do Amy is out of the mind he lied to her about Ashley staying with him.(Oh and sorry Amy for saying your out of your mind.)

Mimi Caleb is so not hotter then Ty, Ty is hotter then Caleb (sorry Caleb but Ty is hotter then you not saying you are not good looking but you are just not as hot as Ty.)

Lily Caleb is not the only thing on the show there are more people on the show like Amy,Ty,Mallory,Jack, and Lou so don't stop watching Heartland if Caleb is not going to be in season three but i bet he will be, Heartland is not that dramatic with out him.

Cali i agree with you i really want amy and ty to get back together and i want calab to just stay out of it.

Well that is all i have to say.

(:HEARTLAND ROCKS:)
(:TY IS SSSSOOOO CUIET:)

Heartland is literally the best show ever created! I can't wait until Sunday's episode.

LOL! Wow Ty sure looks, well excitable in that one photo. Of course we'll see why he and Amy are holding horses and visibly screaming to cheer on the competitors. And it does look like Lou's hosting it at Heartland.

2 more days... It also looks like Scott's racing as well (whoever it is looks like him). Hope this episode is good!

rrrr why does everyone like caleb so much??!!!! hes supposed to be the antagonist!! thats the point of his character!

I really hope that nothing is wrong with Val!! Ashley should of just said yes to her mom like...honestly!!!! PLEASE NO MORE KIT!! shes just trying to be Tys girlfriend because Amy was before!! AMY AND TY FOREVER!

I hope she gets with Ty lol.. they were cuteee and theres always been something theree

Ahaha, this one looks awesome! I'm so excited!

Ty and Amy should really hook up. The night on the cattle drive at the campfire, when Ty was talking about when he had been gone and that there was only one thing he wanted to tell Amy but he did not know if she still wanted to hear that one thing. That was awsome!!! Caleb does not know anything about Amy, Ty does. Ty is the one for Amy!!!!! Sorry Caleb.

Hi

Whoever Pickles is just to let you know Amy and Caleb can't be together because it's supposed to be Amy + Ty = Foreva

Caleb can have Ashley and Kit has no place thats all I have to say.

Thx
HorseLvaFereva!!

OOOOOOOOO i bet Ty is gunna win ;)

Omg, this show is literally taking over my life! I barely have time for the real world anymore! I just want to say, caleb is soooo not hot. Ty is definitely where its at, anyone can see that. Caleb and Ashley would make such a better couple. I'm pumped for the episode, i hope things get interesting. Maybe kit will take a hike. lol. Love it..

soooooooooooooooooo excitd for this episode!! I CAN NOT WAIT!! Whats happening between val and caleb in that last picture.........

This episode looks really, really, REALLY good, I can't wait till tomorrow!! I hope Ty breaks up with Kit and gets together with Amy, He will treat her way better than Caleb did, Caleb cheated on her, but Ty won't do it!! I have a feeling that Ty and Amy are gonna start dating pretty soon.
I LOVE HEART LAND!!!!! And Ty!!!!

I dont ike caleb! He dosn't have to be on te show for all i care!

I totally love this show!!!! I can't wait untill tomorrow night! I hope Amy and Ty get together. I kinda feel bad for Caleb though.

I'm soooooo hoping ty and amy get back together...if caleb had really cared about how she felt he would have told ashley to stay somwhere else!! hopefully the high emotions from the derby brings those two (ty & amy) closer...

O my gosh, i can't wait to see episode 215. it's going to be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oml it looks like such an intresting episode! it's one thing after skool on monday i look forward to watching on the computer!
but where's scott? i luved him! he should be in more episodes and get back together with lou... they were such a cute couple!
anyways.... heartlands a rly awesome show!
hope it never ends
xoxo

hey kelly!
ya, i have the same problem 2. i live in the US so i obviously can't watch Heartland on Sundays. I can only hope that TC will post up the summary and/or i'll watch it on youtube.

i live in canada but sometimes i miss heartlands so i buy them off itunes they are way better than watching then on youtube or the heartland website(no offense)
btw...i love heartland !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it just me or in picture 4 does it look like Scotts riding with Tim and Jack? Just a thought

best show ever - but i've gotta say that i'd be alot happier if ty and amy got back together =P
can't wait to see the episode!

Howdy!
I really enjoy the music on Heartland and if anyone reads this id just like to sujest an awsome Artist from Alberta.
Her name is Jaunita Brandt and i saw her play live at a tiny resturant in the middle of no where! me and my friend were dancing and having a great time so she gave us a free cd! i love her music and shes really down to earth and awsome! i think her music would be great for this show and she has a really soft voice! Thanks for reading!

I LOVE HEARTLAND!
sincerly
adonica

I think that Ty and Amy need to get together! All through the first season I waited and FNIALLY at the end they kissed and then the second season they haven't been together! The show can't just let them fall apart. I do not like Caleb, he annoys me. I much prefer Ty and Amy.

Go AMY AND TY!!!! I really don't like Amy and Caleb together - he is much better suited with Ashley (who in her own weird way, really seems to like Caleb) Amy and Ty belong together :) :) Can't wait to see what transpires between these two in "Dark Horse"

omgggg
the last picturee wooowww
that dosnt look like it led to somthing nice or its eaither a freaking petafilee !! :|

Ty freakin' rocks! Ty and Amy need to be together soon!!!!! Not a fan of Kit.. Caleb is alright but not for Amy..

That was so awsome!!
I loved the part with Amy and Ty! when they were suppose to be watching the halfway mark! If the horses didn't come up, they would have kissed!!!
I'm so glad that Kit is mad at Ty! Because there is something between Amy and Ty!
Next Heartland looks so awsome! I just hope that Ty doesn't go to Jail(if thats who Jack was talking about, pretty sure it was though) I don't think he will though.
I hope that Amy and Ty get back together, before season 3!

Keep up the great work!! This is my favourite T.V. show ever! When I watch it, i'm always telling my family to shut up! (they aren't into horses or Heartland) they are just so loud!

OH MY GOD! I swear to god, I could have killed Tim Flemming! I mean, how inconsiderate is it that Jack helps him up back onto his horse, Tim has a head start and just leaves Jack there! Then, Tim starts bragging to Jack about how he won, and how all Jack could see coming across the finish line was his horses butt! I hate that guy!! Oh, by the way, I'm watching the show as I'm writing, and for all those Caleb-lovers---Ty is the best thing for Amy, no matter what you guys say! In the previews for the next episode, Ty risks his probation thinger to get Amy her horse back! You all suck! Sorry if I have offended anyone by the way.

well i am sort of confused about this episode. it was so random, i loved how amy and ty are getting closer tho :D but i was super dissapointed with the ending, it left so many things un answered like what happened with kit and caleb ... ??

OMG this episode will be AWESOME!!!I wonder what will happen between Ty and kit and Amy and Ty??

OMG LOVED IT!
MY FAVE EPISODE SO FAR (L)
AND FINALLY SCOTT IS BACK! I HOPE LOU AND HIM GET BACK TOGETHER AND TY AND AMY TOO!
CANT WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK (L)

i dont know why u guys like caleb hes not that great i like ty better caleb is not cute or anything ty and amy look better together anyways

I liked this episode....... are Ty and Kit over?????? please they are!!!!! cause at that one point where Amy and Ty are wrestling, it looked like they were going to kiss! I thought Mrs. Bell was deaf???? And since Caleb wants to do rodeo will he be leaving..... cause he should (no offense). the fight between Tim and Jack was interesting, and when Scott entered the race (good to see him back) i knew he was going to win. And when he did and he won the night at the dude ranch, he whispered to Lou "now i need to find someone to go with" (or something like that) she started to do a bid and it looked like his face fell... did anyone else notice that??? It looked like he wanted Lou to go with him... that's what it looked like to me anyway.
Next Weeks episode looks awesome, i wonder who stole Spartan????

Lily get your hormones under control. Its not about caleb. Amy/ty and the horses = the real picture.
And where was mallory this episode??? But i LOVED it. I love the horses.

I love Heartland .....I don't know about you guys but I really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish Ty and Amy get back together and Kit gets a hike......because find her really snobby for some reason!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Kaleb I hope he still stays at the ranch but I think Ashley should date him.......my opinoin!!!!!111

HEARTLAND ROCKS WITH A MAGER 9 ZILLION THUMBS BIBI

Great episode!! As always. But man you guys are driving me and everybody else crazy with Amy and Ty. They should be together already....it came so close this time lol. As for Caleb hopefully he goes with Ash or something. Looks like Jack and Tim are becoming freinds again which is good. Hopefully Ty let's Kit off nicely because she's a nice girl but Amy is the one for him. I see Scott is trying to get back together with Lou, he is 1000 times better then Peter (the oil guy)......but can anyone tell me why Scott left and why he's not together with Lou anymore? Kinda missed that part.

Great show!!! Keep it comming for years!!!

Well, the first part of the episode, consisted of Amy promising to go to the rodeo with Caleb for team roping, Ty promising Kit he'd go to the rodeo with her, the county representative informing Lou and Mrs. Bells of the Livestock rule, the grudge between Tim and Jack starts brewing, and Val visiting Caleb.

After Lou comes up with the "brilliant" plan, rushing in the house flustered and excited. Quickly flips on the TV, which reveals her news about the plan to bring back the Hudson Durby. All 3 witnesses sink in the news when the phone rings (You call that ringing off the hook?) After answering her very first call, it was obvious the term "Hotline" sank in too deep. Disgusted, she hangs up the phone hoping her next calls might be a bit more friendly. While everyone in the room laughs, which it is funny. But how tacky is that for a news report, she holds up a sign with a phone number on it? A sign? She's convinced she can come up with enough money to keep Sugarfoot in Mrs. Bells care. She probably didn't realize that small town Derbys aren't that profitable.

After Tim has found Jack loading hay up into the truck, he announces it isn't actually free. But since he did have all 60 head stolen, with only 2 long horns remaining, he must do something with the hay. Jack refuses to take the hay for $100 and trys to convince him for $75. He unloads the bales after deciding it isn't worth it at all. The price of hay in their minds is crazy, even good quality hay is an average of $50 bucks a round bale. After a final shout Tim rides away. Of course both of them are extreme bone heads to be arguing like that, grow up old men. The characters are getting worse as the season progresses.

Amy then finds that Ty had made plans to rehome and Ex-Racehorse. Kit was right about one thing, that is one UGLY horse. It becomes Ty's special project, which he's obviously very excited about once he discovers that "Money" (What a name) has a chance of winning. Just because he won 3 out of 12 races, well lets see... Thats NINE lost! The rates are way higher for him to lose! And he's a race horse, not an endurance horse. Bet it takes an expert to tell him that.

Once Ty has convinced Jack that Money may be the best bet for the race, Jack takes a friendly ride. With of course a helpful leg up from Ty. Jack urges the horse into a full gallop with a loud "Holy Crap!" (Wow, you look like such an experienced cowboy... Not) Ty yells and hoorays, happy that it worked out. Then when Jack decides Money is their "secret weapon" Ty goes all out buying special feed and dense workout schedules. Not telling a soul about their secret plan that they think will assure them success.

On the other side of the line, Amy agrees to help her Dad with his horse since his shoulder has been bothering him (What an idiot). Then she goes to Lou explaining how she doesn't want to be with Ty and Kit in the truck for 4 hours with their lovey dovey sickness. Lou tells her to ditch Caleb. Which is what she does, leaving him very upset and dissapointed in her. Amy then asks Ty for some of his "magic feed". No, he can't possibly give her a tad of the feed, since it's one of the "secret ingredients" to their assured victory. Then she threatens that "the bag will be hers!" once Ty's gone with Kit to the rodeo. oh, but she doesn't know that Ty also ditched Kit (Finally some sense knocked into to Kit's "The world's all sunshines and rainbows" head). Leaving everyone thinking there's still a thing between Ty and Amy.

Anyway............ Skip all the way to the half way point in the middle of the derby. Where Amy can't get the walky talky to work to communicate with Lou. It's interesting when Lou pointed them both spotters. With Jack's comment "At least they once be binding drunk". The first thing that popped into my head was "They'll be doing something else" which they were. Ty teases her that she isn't as competitive as her sister, Amy assures him she's way more competitive (No duh). After some flirting she tackles him, they wrestle on top of each other (Ooh if Kit and caleb could see this) through all there little games, they stumble right in the middle of the track. Now focused on one another, they attempt a smooch. Uh Oh! Here come the horses! Ty and Amy are busted, witnessed by at least 8 people. Including Gramps and Daddio.

Overall: Horrible acting, and oh the "puke me green" drama is well actually entertaining. So far we're moving forward to Ty and Amy getting back together! Oh joy. Freaks should learn to get a life.

Looking forward to the next episode. Finally something really exciting!!! And something to do with horses again, honestly. But anyways. Looking forward to possible pics. Hope the episode turns out really really cool, the preview looked good. Looks like Ty`s nice little temperment issues are put to the test once again, and Amy looked upset. Oh he`s gone! Chill out. I`ll be watching...

hey i like horse some much and i haven't try it before...?

Hey all you people saying that Caleb is the best don't know what your talking about! And if Amy and Ty didnt get back together then Heartland would have NO POINT UNDERSTAND?

when do new heartland episodes get put on the heartland web site?

i missed the show this week i hope they post it soon it sounds good i can't wait to see it.

Zoey Z. Are you kidding me!!!!????!!!! Amy is the wicked witch of the west! Ty basically IS officially cheating on Kit! Amy thinks she deserves everything and everybody must fall at her feet and worship her! AAAAAHHHHHHHH! Does this show how much I strongly dislike her! If Ty and Amy get together it should at least be in a logical way! IT's as if she thinks she has exclusive rights to him! Anyway! Besides that it was a great episode!: )

And i will admit i burst out laughing when the horses ran through the field interupting a potentially dangerous situation!!!!
Jack was so funny!

Thats All
( don't be hating on me! )

no! looks like caleb and amy are talking!
i really want ty and amy to get back together!
i wonder what haooens between van and caleb?!??!!

i loved the episode it was awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think Ty and Amy are going to get back together, i hope they do!!!!! i can not believe that
Jack and Tim are friends!!

WOW! that was an amazing episode!! i loved how it exposed the relationshiips between all the charactors a bit more. Where was Mallory???!!!!! WHY DIDNT TY AND AMY KISS?????

i love heart land.. it is def. the best show made of all time.. its really annoying how any cant make up here mind about ty or caleb. she should definitly go for ty and caleb and ashley should be together :) and kit should just move on out of the way lol

i think the show has a bit too much drama and not enough horse and riding in it.. amy used to heal horses and find out their problems but there hasnt been much of that in this season.. its more focused on the people and the dude ranch instead of what really goes on at heartland.. :) I LOVE TY!

My daughter (9 years old) loved the March 1 episode. THis was so exciting with the race and all the underlying events going on. It was great the horse to be rehomed was an ex-thoroughbred. We would not miss an episode of Heartland. We have to watch it more than once on the Sunday and do we ever miss it when it is not on. The relationships are always interesting to see what will happen but we also like seeing the different horse related events that are on the show.
Phyllis & Solstice

"TV Fan", if you hate this show so much, why are you even bothering to watch it? I think you`re the one who needs to get a life. =P

Anyway, I loved it.
So Caleb is leaving? Well I hope he comes back, I was just starting to like him. Jack & Tim were really funny. :D And Ty & Amy are so cute together. . . I wonder if Kit is going to dump Ty or something. . . ?

Can`t wait untill next week!

Dark Horse
Another Fantastic Episode. =D
Thank the lord for PVR I almost missed tonights Heartland due to soccer.
I absolutely loved this episode & next weeks one looks very exciting.
So Lou decides to resurrect the Hudson Derby to help Mrs.Bell which stirs up an old rivalry between Jack & Tim. Kit & Ty’s relationship is on the rocks Amy & Caleb are done Ashley & Val are on the road to recovery and Ty & Amy are starting to heat up…No wonder this show is a Drama.
Lou-I admire her charitable actions in trying to help Mrs.Bell, you sure know how to run a derby. Too bad about the betting, I knew from the start something was going to happen. Mrs.Bell isn't so deaf anymore haha. I wonder what happens with the County? Good idea to stay on both sides of the fence during the derby. What is she going to do about Scott?
Jack-Glad you finally worked things out with Tim..sort of
Jack is truly something, you’re like a father to Ty. Jack deserved Ty’s help.
Shaun Jonhston did an amazing job acting wise in this episode.
Tim-We got to learn more of his story today. Him and Jack finally buried the hatchet [somewhat]. Sounds like the have a long history
Ty- Ty continues to be a very empathetic, caring character. Keeping your promise to Jack was a good move, but not to Kit well I don't really know what to say. We got to see Ty's competitive side, with the racing & wrestling. The relationship with Amy was fun in this episode a little friendly competition never hurt anyone right?? Except well…Ty almost kissed her! But then the horses came, Glad they did because that would make things way different between them. He needs to make up his mind, he can’t have Kit & Amy.
Amy-Chose her dads side of the fence and came through on her promise. Things with Caleb and her aren’t going to well. But she made a smart move on not going I think. It was fun to see Amy’s competitiveness [is that a word?] again. Amy has matured and her and Ty’s relationship is better than ever. A little friendly competition eh?

Part 2-----
Caleb-It was nice to learn about his Rodeo aspirations. Is he gonna take Val’s sponsorship? What about Ashley, he seems to like her company a lot. They would make a good couple. He shouldn’t have yelled at Amy, because Amy promised her dad and can’t do everything. I know he is frustrated but come on….If he wants to be mad he should've been there to see Ty wrestling Amy and then attempting a kiss.
Scott-Finally he’s are back!! I knew he was going to win. I liked that he did too. He still has feelings for Lou. When him & Ty were at the diner together that was a good scene, it was nice to see Scott helping out again.
Ashley-She finally doesn’t hate her mom. Her & Val should put their differences aside, they obviously care about each other. I think Ashley shouldn’t have put the idea into Caleb’s head about Amy & Ty being together just because they both weren’t going to the rodeo. Why was Ashley all upset about not being asked first to go to the rodeo with Caleb? I didn’t understand that.
Val-That was generous of her to offer sponsorship to Caleb, but she is trying to get/buy him away from Ashley. When Val caught Caleb coming out of the O’Dell/Stanton residence doing up his jeans was funny!
Kit-Just when I thought things were patching up one thing leads to another. She still doesn’t trust Ty. She has a few reasons not to but she doesn’t know them like we do. It seems like she is done with pretending everything is all happy-go-lucky and she is starting to realize what is happening
[Finally someone turned on the light in her Sunsine,Lollipops & Rainbows world]. We all know how much she likes Ty….I don’t really know, kind-of a cliffhanger.
Love, Life & Family really do collide.

@TV Fan i liked your post, it made me laugh. The drama is actually quite entertaining isn't it?? Haha.

Hey

Can't wait for the next episode

Taylor

I watch next to no television, but I NEVER miss a Heartland episode. Both my daughter and I are diehard horse people. I enjoy Heartland because of it's excellent humour. suspense, wholesomeness and its authenticity... not to mention its Canadian content! I too am really looking forward to season 3... not to mention the last three new episodes of season 2. It's been a long time since we've had a quality, family show to look forward to on a Sunday evening like this one. Heartland is one of the best decisions you ever made, CBC. Yes, Heartland, you really rock.... and yes, Jack is hot!! :0)
Thnx!!
Gayle

I loved this episode! I thought the stuff going on between Caleb and Val were kind of interesting, I wonder what her intentions are? And Ty and Amy!!! I wish they would have kissed!!! I really hope that they will get back together, and Kit will stay out of the way :P Not that I don't like her, but Amy and Ty are perfect together. It was neat that Ty and Jack were working together, and also the stuff going on between Jack and Tim was quite interesting. I wonder where Mallory was?

Anyway, All in all, it was an excellent episode, and i'm looking forward to next week as always!! :)

-Amber

Thundering horses, Jack & Tim's hillarious verbal sparring, and an "almost" kiss for Ty & Amy - another great episode that fans of all ages obviously enjoyed, as per the many comments already! One unusual note, however, where was Mallory? She is living at the ranch full-time and for something as BIG as the revival of the Hudson Charity Derby I'm sure she would have been involved somehow. We really hope that her character is not being phased out (as seems to have happened with Scott Cardinal up until this episode) or that she is, heaven-forbid, gone (as per Ben Stillman in Season 1). Mallory is a vital part of the Heartland success and we look forward to seeing her back soon; as well as a plausable explanation for her absence in the "Dark Horse" episode. Let's keep it real folks!

'Dark Horse', written by Leila Basen and David Preston, isn't going to crack my 'favourite Heartland episodes' list, but that doesn't mean it was a poor episode, by any means. But before I say anything else...

SCOTT CARDINAL!!

Wow, was it ever good to see his face again. Don't know where he's been, but I'm just happy he's getting some screen time again.

Now, TV Fan has done a rather impressive job recapping the pertinent details of the episode, so I'm reluctant to go with an extremely in-depth, blow-by-blow synopsis this time. We'll see where my thoughts take me.

If We Let This Dark Horse Run...

One of the episode's central conflicts starts when Lou reads a rather official piece of mail Mrs. Bell has received. She's reluctant to reveal the troubling news inside, and thinks she can play problem-solver. Apparently, Hudson County by-laws stipulate one must have at least 1 hectare in order to keep livestock (in this case, Sugarfoot), and Mrs. Bell doesn't. Lou meets with a rather self-righteous and snooty by-law officer by the name of Ms. Newton, and tries to sell the notion that the horse is an "assistance animal", and that Mrs. Bell is visually impaired. Oops. Lying will get you in so much trouble, Samantha Louise!

Ms. Newton decides to comes 'round to Mrs. Bell's abode to assess the living conditions of Sugarfoot, and Lou's assertion that Mrs. Bell needs the horse to 'assist' her. Unfortunately, Mrs. Bell picks that very day to be her most coherent. Ms. Newton does not observe any impairment, either mentally, visually, or with Mrs. Bell's ability to hear. She concludes that Sugarfoot does not qualify as an assistance animal. Further, Ms. Newton is appalled that Mrs. Bell allows him to live inside the house and wants to impound the poor horse. Yeah. We're talking fines and fees and all kinds of things Lou realises Mrs. Bell probably cannot afford.

Poor Lou. She thought she was only helping Mrs. Bell with her initial by-law infraction, but has only made things worse. Then she gets the bright idea to re-institute the Hudson Derby in order to raise funds for lawyer's fees to fight the by-law people.

Now, I don't want to sound harsh, but I have to call Lou out on a little something called 'meddling'. It's hypocritical of her to think she can just poke her nose into Mrs. Bell's business just like that, when it seems other people aren't allowed to poke their noses in Lou's business. She's only lucky Mrs. Bell doesn't throw any hissy fits!

The last time the Hudson Derby was run, there was some dispute among some of the competitors as to the rightful winner. Well, it's more than a simple dispute. It's been a long-standing feud that has never been resolved. Tim and Jack are obviously the competitors in question. Tim won that event by 3 lengths, but sore loser Jack has always accused him of cheating, claiming the spotter didn't "see" Tim's trickery because he was drunk. Tim never misses an opportunity to remind Jack that he won, further antagonizing him.

Another important plot point receives an intro when Kit comes by with a rather hideous-looking thoroughbred named 'Money'. Kit hopes Amy can re-home him, but Amy demurs, saying Money can be Ty's pet project.

Onto Caleb's bid to earn his pro-rodeo card: The Foothills Rodeo is coming up, and he wants Amy to help him out in the team roping event, and she agrees.

Back in the barn, Ty's trying to brush poor Money's awful-looking coat, but Kit comments that it really won't do any good. He asks Kit about the horse's history, and she says he was apparently a chuck wagon horse. Ty wants to bring Scott in to vet him, and assures Kit that Money will be in good condition in no time. She says she knew he was the right man for the job, and tells him she's really happy he's coming to see her barrel race at the rodeo on the weekend. They share a nice little smooch, and Kit suggests they take Ty's truck when they go, because she doesn't want Amy to ride with them. Ty seems surprised at this, because he didn't know Amy would be going to the rodeo, too.

At meal time, Jack recounts the last race for everyone (*where's Mallory?!*), and why he felt Tim cheated. Jack also says that even though the Derby was a charity event, there was still some under-the-table betting going on. He says enough money was raised to build a new wing of the Hudson County hospital.

Val Stanton pays a surprise visit to Caleb at his trailer. Poor guy was just getting his jeans on when he opened the door. Talk about embarrassing! Val asks if Ashley's in, and Caleb advises her she isn't.

"Guess it would be my chance to talk with the young man my daughter is 'shacked up' with," Val insinuates.

Caleb shyly says that it's not 'like that', to which Val skeptically mutters that there's not much room for privacy in the trailer. Caleb remembers his manners and invites her in for coffee, or beer, but Val decides not to. Instead, they talk about his rodeo career, Caleb tells her he only needs a few more wins to turn pro, but that his one problem is his lack of sponsors.

Val's impression of Caleb seems to rise a few notches when she compliments him, and says that she feared Ashley had taken up with some man whose aspirations didn't go beyond being a simple ranch-hand living in a trailer. It's a little hard to tell if Val is just patronizing him here, but her usual snide attitude isn't coming through with those remarks. Val then politely takes her leave, and asks Caleb to tell Ashley to call her. As she goes to her van, Caleb tells Val not to worry, that he's taking good care of her daughter. Val just sort of half-smiles and waves good-bye.

Next scene comes the part (TV Fan handily recapped) about Lou's televised announcement about the Hudson Derby.

Jack wants to be the first to sign up, but finds Tim's name is already on the list. Yep. That sure gets his goat.

Later at Maggie's Diner, Amy and Tim have a chance to chat, and Tim enlists her to help him out with his horse, since his shoulder's been bothering him. Amy tries to tell him maybe he ought to back out, but Tim refuses, since Jack's entered.

At the same time, Jack and Ty have been discussing just how far back Jack and Tim's...animosity goes. Ty also tries to talk Jack out of the race, but Jack argues that the fee is non-refundable, and the insufferable Tim would never let him live it down if he chickens out. Unfortunately for him, the old horse he wants to use doesn't seem to be up to the task.

Over at Mrs. Bell's place, Lou apologizes for making things worse, but says she's fixing it all by running the Derby again, and tells Mrs. Bell she'd like her to drop the flag for the race. Mrs. Bell agrees, but advises Lou she'd better not tell Tim or Jack about the race, because it'll be history repeating itself all over again.

Heehee. Mrs. Bell mightn't be the sharpest tool in the shed, but by golly, she has a long memory.

Night time at the O'Dell-Stanton trailer, and Ash brings Caleb out some coffee as he deals with the firewood. He tells her that Val came by, and that he thought she was pretty decent. Ashley agrees that ever since Val had her medical tests, she's been making it difficult to hate her.

Cut to Heartland, where Amy goes to Lou for advice. She is conflicted about several things: Team roping with Caleb on the weekend; schoolwork; the prospect of spending 4 hours in a truck with the lovey-dovey Ty and Kit; having to help Tim train his horse when she doesn't even think he should be in the race...

Lou appears distracted, but tells Amy: "Ditch Caleb, help Dad, do your homework, and don't make yourself miserable hanging out with Ty and Kit."

Amy's a little taken aback at Lou's forthright advice. "You can tell it makes me miserable?" She frets that Kit and Ty somehow know, too. (Well, we sure know, Amy...chances are they're not oblivious to it.)

This was a nice little reversal of the scene in Seismic Shifts where Lou went to Amy for advice. I'm again impressed at how readily these sisters lean on each other when they need help, and how willingly the help is given (even if Lou was a little distracted this time).

In the barn...do my eyes doth deceive me? Is it? Can it possibly be? Yes, Heartland fans, it is the return of Scott Cardinal. And he discovers that Money, the horse, was actually a racehorse. Ty mentions that he heard Scott was a contender in the Derby the last time it was run (those scant 10 or 12 years ago). Scott reminisces that he was barely 18 at the time, and fantasized that if he somehow won, maybe Lou would notice him, and come to see him as more than just another of Marion's 'projects'.

Well! This is the Scott we remember, not the body-snatcher impostor Scott who wanted to break up with Lou. Thank you Leila and David, for returning Scott to his senses!

Scott advises Ty he first ought to check Money's stats before he gets Jack's hopes up. Ty's a bit surprised Scott has come to the conclusion he's grooming Money to be Jack's horse for the Derby. But Scott obviously knows all about the feud, since he placed third in that fateful Derby race...

Okay, we're sort of at the half-way point of the episode, so I'm going to stop for now. I'll be back with Part II tomorrow, because it seems I just can't stop myself from digging deep with these episodes.

But before I sign off for now, a mention about this episode's Notable Absences:

Mallory Wells. You'd think she'd be all over the revelations about the Derby. Even though she would have just been born when it all went down, it's the sort of anecdote she'd want to know about, and talk about...

Lisa Stillman. Man, if she only knew what Jack was doing, practically killing himself in that Derby race...Maybe it's a good thing she's somewhere not in Hudson... We actually don't know where she is, but you'd think this would be something she'd gladly donate some funds to. Which brings me to another silly digression.

Flashpoint and Heartland Equestrian Connections!

If any of you eagle-eyed TV junkies were watching Flashpoint on rival network CTV on Friday - holy smokes! Jessica Steen's been moonlighting in Toronto! While Heartland is on hiatus, she's got herself cast as a kick-butt constable named 'Donna' that's joined the SRU team. And she's not the only Heartland actor to appear in that series, either. Gabriel Hogan, (aka P.W. 'Peter' Morris), has portrayed Roland Cray; Tatiana Maslany (Kit Bailey) once played an abductee named Penny, and it looks like Peter Outerbridge (Brad Borden) will be in an upcoming Flashpoint episode, too. I wonder who else FP is gonna rustle away from HL! Keep those barn doors locked, I say.

'Til I post part II,

-TC

Thanks Nikole, I like your posts too. Rachel I was talking about the characters, not the commenters before you spread around that idea. Why would I say that to people I don't know?

Since Lisa was sponsering the Hudson Derby (note the banner on the fenceline) shouldn't she be there? And yeah, like many others I wonder where Mallory was. I'm surprised she'd miss out on such an event as the Hudson Derby.

It was a hilarious episode though, mostly Jack and Tim butting heads and Lou and Mrs.Newton as well.

This episode rocked. I love how lou dug up something from the past with tim and jack. I though it was funny how they were fighting about it and jack said you cheated and put the hay back. It was funny.

So are ty and kit over because at maggies when ty said to kit he couldn't go to the think with kit, kit was mad. So that might be the thing that ty needs a week from kit to show that they don't belong together. That amy and him belong together. But by the look of the next episode ty might be going to jail for helping amy get horse back. That someone stole. But i hope that, that doesn't happen.

Oh i almost for got to tell you guys that i really liked the part when amy and ty were suppose to be watching the halfway mark! But they were playing. They almost kissed but the horses came up and ty and amy didn't kiss. When i saw that they were about to kiss i was so excited but then they stopped i wonder
why. it was because of the stupid horses. i was so mad i really want ty and amy to kiss again. NO! I REALLY WANT THEM TO GET BACK TOGETHER AGAIN.
I don't think i will have to wheat much longer. Because i think that they will be getting back together one of these episodes. So the people who are hoping they will get back together before season 3 they just might.

(:Well that is all i have to say, oh the people who film heartland you guys are doing a great job keep it up Jordan now i am done hahaha:)

First of all, if a horse wins 3 of 12 races, that's pretty good! What if he got second in 6 races and third in 3 of them?
Depending on the purse size, that's at least 150,000 bucks!
I loved the episode though! I love this whole rehoming-a-racehorse thing, it was awesome!
If you can't tell I'm completely obsessed with racing!
Can't wait for the next one!
-Curlin

AWESOMONIOUS !!!!! Ask me what I "DID NOT" like about this episode....I say "NOTHING"!! Ask me what I "DID" did like about this episode....I say "EVERYTHING"!! The "laugh out loud" laughter in my living room confirms this statement.

As always, the choice of music bodes well in my ears and I am partial to my Southern Alberta scenery.

@ TC - I'm with ya....where's Mallory? (this would have been right up her alley) and I was going to mention all the "HL" talent visiting "FP", but you know how the saying goes....."On the ball or on the bus". You are definately on the ball !!!

Keep on truckin' .....

Omg, that episode was soo0o g0od!!! I really wish ty and amy kissed.... stupid horses... :(
I cannot wait till the next week's show!!!
Ty and Amy 4Ever!!
- Alexis :)

omg i luved this episode it was soooooooooooooo funny me and my mom were keelin over laughing i cant wait 2 c wat the next episode holds for us

great episode love the wresterling so cutee

Has anyone noticed that they are doing a great job of keeping Ep.216 a secret ?

The CBC site only says Amy & Ty will stop at nothing to get Spartan back.
And then it talks about Caleb deciding whether or not to head south or rip up Vals cheque
The BRiEF video from Graham(Ty) is like 10 seconds long...Haha

@Jordan & Horselovafereva
Does it matter what I think?

I know Ty & Amy are meant to be it is like STICK IN YOUR FACE OBVIOUS!
I am Team Amy & Ty.
But....by getting back together I mean working things out. Which they didn't. Because Caleb is being a jerk right now.
I meant to type "Oh. Hope Amy & Caleb aren't getting back together.
Besides, Ty is doing a really bad job of hiding his feelings for Amy around Kit and obviously around Amy...=D

TC is back with part II, where Jack and Tim perpetuate their feuding ways...

Fit to be Tied

Well, I tell you...Heartland writers must have a tiny obsession with undergarments. Caleb has popped by, and Amy presents him with a pair of his boxers that she found in their dryer. Obviously a remnant from when Ashley came by with her three loads earlier in the episode (Whoops, I forgot to mention that part...I assign myself to mucking duty for 2 weeks for that ghastly oversight.)

Amy tries to gently break it to Caleb that she can't join him for the rodeo on the weekend (taking Lou's advice that she should 'ditch' him in favour of her homework and her father.)

Caleb complains that she promised him she'd rope with him before she promised Tim, and that he's already signed her up, but Amy doesn't budge. Caleb takes off in anger. (And I personally feel he's justified, too, but what can you do...)

Ty is looking up the Winner's Circle 'Strategic Betting Success' webpage, and is amazed by what he learns about the poor ugly horse he's supposed to be re-homing, but is instead grooming for Jack's Derby race.

His real name is 'You're So Money', Ty informs Jack, as they take the thoroughbred out for a test run. Won 3 of the 12 races he ran. Jack skeptically comments that Money's racing days are over. Ty counters that the same could be said for Jack. But the horse still has some kick, and proves to Jack that he can indeed run. The two believe they have a winner in Money – he just needs some fine-tuning so he peaks at the right time.

“This guy is our 'secret weapon', emphasis on the 'secret',” Jack tells Ty, and they gleefully shake on it.

Amy picks that moment to walk into the barn with Tim's horse, and wants to know what they're so happy about. (Oh, nothing.....)

Jack recognizes the horse as belonging to his rival. “At least now I know whose side of the fence you're on,” he says accusingly. He laughs it off, though, confident he'll still beat Tim.

Over at Maggie's, Scott recommends to Ty a special feed to help with Money's conditioning. While they're noshing on coffee and pie, Kit bounds in. Ty awkwardly tries to tell Kit he can no longer go to the rodeo to see her barrel race. He lamely tells her that something came up (I suppose he is reluctant to talk about how he's using Money to assist Jack).

Kit (oh, naïve, little Kit) hopes that whatever it is that's 'come up' isn't something serious.

“I made a promise,” Ty says.

“Yeah, to me,” Kit replies.

Ty tries to salvage the conversation by telling Kit it's about a promise he made to Jack and the horse. Kit seems a little irritated by this, and asks why Amy can't take care of it. Ty isn't sure, but thinks it's because she'll be busy at the rodeo. Kit thinks that's odd, because Caleb has just informed her that Amy isn't going, after all.

It's news to Ty, who seems to realise he's pretty much dug himself into a hole when Kit tells him she doesn't believe he didn't know. She even asks him if there's still 'something' going on between him and Amy. He protests that it's not about that, and tries a last-ditch effort to make things right by saying he knows she'll do great at the rodeo. Kit mutters a half-hearted 'thanks', and leaves, looking really wounded by what's just transpired.

Tsk, tsk... Oh, Ty. What did Caleb say about what he'd do to you if you hurt Kit?

After that little spat, Ty's back and feeding Money. Amy sees the bag of feed, and asks if he's saving any of it for Tim's horse. Ty says no way, since she relegated Money's care to his hands. She jokes that as soon as he's off for the rodeo on the weekend, she'll be raiding the bag.

They finally find out from each other that neither will be attending the rodeo, and that their respective dates are mad at them. They also agree not to get sucked into the whole competitive spirit even though they're backing different horses.

(Yeah, fat chance, that happening).

Ty and Amy take the horses out for a little fun race, and Amy handily wins. Ty claims that he wasn't really racing, to which Amy says she wasn't, either. It's another very comfortable and fun scene with the two of them...laughing and joking around.

Departure time for Caleb. Ashley sees him out, and he asks her if she won't change her mind about accompanying him. She knows he's only asking because Amy bailed on him. He apologises, and says he'll be sure to ask her first the next time.

Before he gets into his truck, though, Ashley points out some facts she finds painfully obvious: Amy's bailed Caleb, and Ty on Kit. She asks if he thinks that's mere coincidence. Caleb has to admit she has a point, but that he can't think about such things right now. His focus is instead on his 4-hour drive, and what he needs to accomplish at the rodeo.

Morning of the new Hudson Derby, and lo and behold, it's Scott Cardinal, late entrant. He gladly pays the late entry fee for him and his horse, 'Eat My Dust'. It pleases Lou, because so far, they're barely breaking even on the event.

Small digression: Good eye, there, TV Fan, on spotting the 'Fairfield Stables' banner. I'd missed that the first go-round when I was scribbling down my notes for the episode. So yeah, I guess Lisa Stillman was one of the Derby sponsors, but she didn't actually have any face-time. (She was maybe too busy braving the arctic temperatures in Toronto as her alter-ego, Donna, on Flashpoint).

Okay, back to the action: A Hudson local, nicknamed 'Stumpy' (on account, I suppose, of his leg), likes the sound of Scott's horse, and offers up a $100 bet. This gives Lou a 'brilliant' idea to 'allow' people to bet on the Derby.

Ty advises Jack that Money is a 'come-from-behind' horse, and he should hold back until close to the end. This is at odds with Jack's style.

Amy asks Tim if he's still up for the race, and he assures her he is – if the horse is ready.

Lou's doing brisk business with her betting pool, and realises she's short a spotter (how convenient for the plot!). She approaches Amy to fill in for the spot at the halfway mark, but Jack protests on the grounds that she's been 'helping the competition'. Lou changes her mind and calls on Ty to go, instead. This time, Tim objects, since he feels Ty was obviously helping Jack.

Solomon the Wise, er, I mean, Samantha Louise then decides both Amy and Ty will go. This is a solution Jack and Tim can work with.

Before the start of the race, Lou announces that the spirit of the Derby is all about community, and reminds folks that the betting window has closed.

Mrs. Bell calls the competitors to their marks, and drops the flag (ooh, a nice Alberta provincial flag!), giving them the 'go' signal. The 8 or so men dash off to their horses in their no-holds barred, push 'em, shove 'em, knock-down way as the crowd shouts out their approval. The spotters along the way radio back the positions as the race progresses.

Then evil by-law officer, Ms. Newton pops up, and says: “I understand you're taking bets?”

Lou tells her that the betting window is closed as the race has already commenced.

Sigh. Lou, dear...you didn't realise that parimutuel betting at amateur sporting events was in contravention of Hudson County by-laws, did you?

[Note: Parimutuel betting (from the French language, Pari Mutuel or mutual betting) is a betting system in which all bets of a particular type are placed together in a pool; taxes and a house "take" or "vig" are removed, and payoff odds are calculated by sharing the pool among all winning bets. - Thanks, Wiki-the-sometimes-reliable source of all information...]

Lou claims she had no idea, and Ms. Newton takes an almost perverse pleasure in informing Lou that ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. “You'll be hearing from my office,” is her parting threat. Yep. I smell more fines, and Lou's enjoyment of the event has just been trashed.

Things are getting nasty on the course, as the competitors try every dirty trick to saboutage each other. A couple guys take a spill from their horses, and Tim falls behind after having had the lead from the start.

Amy and Ty drive up to the half-way point to await the contestants. Unfortunately, their walkie-talkie signal strength is poor, so they're unable to communicate with Lou. Ty starts to tease Amy about the crazy competitive streak that runs in her family. She laughingly proclaims that she's way more competitive than Lou, and Ty tempts her to prove it.

This initiates a harmless little wrestling match between the two. It doesn't stay harmless for long when Ty manages to pin Amy to the ground. With their faces inches apart, flushed with excitement... oh, no kiss for you!! The Derby entrants burst on the scene, and Amy and Ty pull apart, lest they get themselves trampled to death. The riders blaze past them, and the two youngsters call out their encouragement.

Further down the course, Tim takes a tumble off his horse, and Jack catches up. “Taking a short-cut, Tim?” he derides. Tim looks like he's in pain; favouring his shoulder.

Noticing his discomfort, Jack asks if he's alright, and Tim says he is. He manages to stand, and asks Jack to give him a leg up. Jack actually dismounts to help his rival! Tim takes the opportunity to grab a head-start on Jack, saying that this time he won't feel guilty about winning.

Lou announces that at the ¾ mark, it's a fellow named Dusty Burdick (sp? I never trust Closed Captions) in the lead followed by... Scott Cardinal! Jack and Tim manage to make up a lot of lost ground, and trail Scott for the homestretch after Dusty goes down.

At the finish-line, it's Scott with the win, followed by the two grudge-match rivals in a dead heat, tied for second place.

Amy and Ty (somehow the signal strength gets a miraculous boost – I blame the volatile southern Alberta atmospheric conditions) hear Lou's announcement over the walkie-talkie. They share a good laugh, and Ty says maybe Jack and Tim will give it a rest now. Amy's doubtful about that one.

Lou presents the Derby winner, Scott, with his prize: An all-inclusive, deluxe weekend package at the Heartland Equestrian Connections cabins. (Call me kooky, but if Lou was confident that someone like Tim or Jack was going to win this one, why such a...tacky prize?)

Noting Ms. Newton in the crowd, Lou tries to placate her by announcing to everyone that contrary to what some people might have believed, she was not running one o' them parimutuel betting thingies...and that their non-taxable, 'charitable donation' will be going straight to Mrs. Bell's defense fund. Ms. Newton simply rolls her eyes at that one.

Scott takes that moment to realise that the gift certificate is for two, and he looks at her, suggestively saying all he has to do is find someone to take. But Lou doesn't bite (probably has Precious Pete on her mind), and starts a bidding war for the #2 spot with their 'big winner'. Several eligible ladies vie for the prize, and it eventually goes for $400.

Oh, poor Scott. Better luck next time, huh? We just hope you know that Lou doesn't still think of you as one of Marion's 'projects', even if you got the big rejection after winning the Derby.

Jack approaches Scott, and wants to be the “first to congratulate” him, when Tim butts in, shaking Scott's hand before Jack can. Scott good-naturedly tells the two men that there's no harm in being #2.

Tim tells Jack that he knows Lou called it a 'tie', but that they both know the only thing Jack saw was his horse's a$$. (Their word, not mine.) Jack replies that yes, that's totally true. If he'd looked behind him, he would have seen a horse's a$$ - the biggest one in Hudson County.

Good on ya, Jack. I was really growing tired of Tim's trash-talk throughout the episode. Tim actually had no come-back for that one.

Later, Caleb and Val share a chat about his rodeo results. He's earned enough points to head to the pro circuit, but can't head south to do so, since he still lacks adequate sponsorship. Val explains that's the reason she wanted to meet with him. She hands him what looks like a cheque, or money-order or something of that nature.

“What's this?” Caleb asks. Val answers that he has all the sponsorship he's going to need, but requests that she not tell Ashley, since she's liable to take the endorsement the wrong way. She drives away, leaving Caleb quite speechless.

Next morning (I think...it's kinda hard to gauge the passage of time here), Lou apologises again to Mrs. Bell, saying it's not likely they'll make much of a profit from the Derby.

“Would you like me to lend you some money, Lou?” Mrs. Bell asks sweetly, apparently blithely unaware of what Lou's been trying to accomplish all this time.

Lou sadly tries to explain. “I was trying to raise money for you.”

Mrs. Bell says that ever since she found her glasses and read the letter from the by-law office, she put in a call to her lawyer. Lou is incredulous at the news that not only do they have Ms. Newton out of their hair, but that the lawyer thinks Sugarfoot is the cutest client ever, and has taken her case pro-bono.

Jack and Tim have the closest thing to a heart-to-heart as we've ever seen them have. Tim suggests they bury the hatchet, to which Jack replies he'll first need to dig it out of his back. They start arguing about just when it was the bad blood between them started. Tim throws out all the times he bested Jack on the rodeo circuit, how his career was taking off while Jack's was fading, but that's all ultimately a smokescreen. Jack claims he didn't give a hoot who Tim was – until Marion brought him home. He says that every time Tim had some success, he was proud of him.

“You were like a son to me,” Jack says.

“'Like a son',” Tim echoes, finding this hard to swallow.

“Until you broke her heart,” Jack says, “and it all went south.”

So there you have it, folks. The Reason Why Jack Hates Tim's Guts. Not like it was any big secret, really, but to hear him admit it...whoa.

Tim knows his culpability in the whole mess, and doesn't deny his wrongdoing. He says he wishes it could have been different, and Jack does, too. It's as close to a reconciliation as we're going to see this episode, because Tim then says:

“I'm going to be very honest: When I realised that Scott was going to win the race, I slowed down so you could catch up.” He gives a playful wink, and Jack bursts out: “The h*ll you did!”

Tsk. *Shakes head* Grown men, chasing each other around baling equipment. They never grow up, do they?

To close out the episode, Ty and Amy take the horses out. This time, it's for real, of course. Amy says she wants it to be fair, and she takes off for a head-start. Ty gives chase, and they gallop across the countryside. Mmmmm, love that Chinook arch and the setting sun they got to ride under.

Of course, we don't know who won that race. Maybe it was another tie. (Or a 'Ty'? Yeah, I know. That was lame.)

Cue end credits.

And that's Dark Horse in the bag. Three more episodes to go until the end of the season.

Notable Absences Part II:

P.W. 'Peter' Morris: I guess Scott and Peter are not allowed to share screen time yet. That would just be way too many triangles for us to juggle at once, and I wasn't all that good at trigonometry. One does wonder, though, what Peter and Lou talked about during their 'normal people talk' in Do Or Die.

Callie Phillips: Hey, are Tim and Callie splits-ville, or what? I thought he was into her, in spite of his reluctance to reveal the depth of their relationship to everyone. Geez, we're also kinda unclear about the depth of their relationship...You'd think she'd have been just as reluctant as Amy was to see him getting on a horse with that shoulder of his.

Parting words: There were no blatant Telephone Clichés this time 'round, but I didn't like that the silly walkie-talkie was malfunctioning one minute, but bursting to life the next. It doesn't count as one of my clichés because it didn't really interrupt anything; I'm just saying I don't like the lack of consistency... So I give this a TC score of 0, but mind those continuity issues, Leila and David!

'Til next episode,

-TC

P.S.

@Twe and Batgirl: Hey, I should add you both to the Heartland Blog 'Noticeable Absences' list! Where are you both hiding?!

@Kimbery L.: I hoped I wasn't the only one who noticed these things, too, about HL and FP stars! Glad to know you were on the ball, too.

Another great show. It just gets better each week, our Sunday nights revolve around Heartland and we love it.
Lets hope that Caleb will accept Val's offer and rides right of the series. YIPPEE he just can't act.
I love the relationship of Val and Ashley it adds spice to the show.
We are hoping that Jack and Val will get together at some point ...remember that the audience watching HEARTLAND IS OF ALLL AGE GROUPS.
We baby boomers love romance too.

We love Heartland and hope that we will be watching it for years to come .

I can't wait for episode 16. Since I don't live in Canada I can't watch it until it gets posted on youtube but I guess that its better than nothing. :) I totally think that Ty and Amy should get back together.

omg!!! i hope that kit and ty are now officially broken up! ty and amy are meant for each other like totally!!!!!!!!!! thank you TC for your summaries!!!!!!!!

OMG! I love Mrs. Bell's face in Photo #6! It's priceless!!!!!:P:P
Anyways, SUCH a good episode!

Hey People- one less hour to wait for Heartland this week. Sorry Saskatchewan you`ll just have to stick it out.

HAHAHAHAAH!!!!! i love pic number 2!!! HANG ON JACK!!!! AHAHAHAHA;p Great episode!

Quite the episode.;]

SCOTT CARDINAL is back, Ty & Amy's flirtacious behavior continues, Caleb & Amy are done, Val & Caleb?, Kit continues to dis-trust Ty, Jack & Tim might finally bury the hatchet....

As we see Lou meddles into Mrs.Bell's business by organizing a charity event Hudson Derby to raise money for a defense fund.
Oh god, here we go again...
Did Lou honestly hold up a sign? A sign? For the number on the news, wow...
Haha the phone call was funny. Her reaction was a little over the top though
Amy promises to go to the rodeo with Caleb for Team Roping....& Ty's going to cheer on Kit.
Jack & Tim stir up an old rivalry....

After making plans to re-home an ex racehorse and finding out about "Money's"[Tys pet project..heehee] past....Ty ditches Kit to help Jack with "Money" while Amy ditches Caleb to train Tim's horse and avoid being left miserable in being in a truck for 4 hours with Ty & Kit.
Ty becomes quite the expert while buying magic feed & having workout schedules. Amy asks Ty to save some feed. Ty says No, Amy threatens that the bag "Shall be hers" when Ty leaves with Kit to rodeo. Ty says well maybe I'm not going to the rodeo and Amy says "Well I'm not either" Then Ty informs Amy that he is not going and that Kits mad at him for not coming & Amy replies her and Caleb are the same way. They agree not to get sucked into the competitiveness. Yeah, sure....They decide to go out riding and Amy wins the so called race, while Ty denies that he wasn't racing. Little friendly Competition never hurt anyone right?
So now everyone thinks something is still going on between Amy & Ty. Well to be honest I think something is starting to go on....

Someone finally tapped into Kit's world of happy-go-lucky...as she now has made it clear to Ty that she doesn't trust him when Ty tells her he can't go to the rodeo. Kit informs Ty that Amy isn't going either and Ty is surprised because this is the first he's heard, Kit notices his reaction. And wonders aloud "Is there still something going on between you two" Ty says this isn't about Amy, this is about Jack. Kit snaps that she doesn't believe him. And stalks off obviously hurt and betrayed. Where Ty is sitting there looking shocked and deep in thought....It might be time to check your feelings Mr.Borden
Can't have Kit & Amy.

Skip to middle of Episode where Lou is running the derby and taking bets under the table. Mrs.Newton shows up and sees that Lou is taking bets. She obviously takes pride in catching Lou. Lou is now short a spotter and asks Amy to go, where Jack interrupts saying she has been working with the enemy, so Lou snaps "Fine Ty go then" This time Tim interrupts saying "Oh and he hasn't been helping the old man." SO then Lou in a rush tells them to both go.

The race is on and Amy and Ty make it to the half-way point. Due to poor signal strength the walkie-talkie is all messed up, so Amy cannot reach Lou. Ty teases Amy about the crazy competitiveness in her family and how Lou has it worse. Amy sarcastically replies that she is definitely more competitive
[No duh!]
They continue flirting and Ty prompts Amy to prove her competitiveness. Amy then tackles Ty to the ground and they wrestle on top of one another rolling around laughing and screaming until Amy gets on Ty's back and he falls on top of her and then Ty manages to pin Amy to the ground and after a few serious moments of silence goes in for the kiss. Totally Harmless right ? I think not....

But WAiT! Here come the calvary...Haha busted by Jack & Tim and many other contestants plus their race horses. After seeing the horses and hearing Amy shrieking "Ty,Ty,Ty!!" Ty grabs Amy and holds her up outta the way while the horses race past. Then Amy & Ty break apart and Amy goes on shouting encouragement while Ty does the same.

Yeah, nothing going on there Ty...If only Kit was there to see that...that would make it interesting.

In the end, Scott wins the derby [perdictable].
What i didn't expect was for was Mrs.Bell to have called her lawyer and have everything work out. Lou explains that she was running the derby to help Mrs.Bell out. But Mrs.Bell has it all figured out, Smart-cookie ;P
Now that she knows about Caleb's aspirations-Val gives Caleb sponsorship to head south, with his pro-rodeo card...But can't tell Ash, because she will take it the wrong way.

Ty & Amy then continue their friendly competition with the final race to get it over with. Amy wants it to be fair so he offers Ty a head-start who declines, then Amy takes off, with Ty chasing close behind. Little game of cat-and-mouse going on here.

In my opinion this episode was a bit better, This time its Ty who needs to decide between Amy or Kit.
It was getting boring between the Amy loves Ty, but Ty has Kit, Then Amy likes Caleb, But Caleb likes Ashley, Then Ty being jealous of Caleb, and Amy being jealous of Kit....
And now its Amy loves Ty,and Ty loves her. Theres just Kit who we all know likes Ty.....

Next Week: Oh. Something exciting and to do with horses. Looks like Ty get himself into more trouble, with his temper issues again.
Amy looks upset, and will obviously go to Ty for comfort, and Ty will obviously be there to comfort her....*rolling eyes*
Hope this episode is worth something....Oh well we shall just have to wait and see.

Busy sked. Watching 2nd season of HL 2 months late. No Mallory today, Sup with that? Caleb/Kit: What's all the hatred? The guy has grown on me. What has he done wrong? Amy is the one who's been acting like a spoiled brat all season. Didn't she drop by his trailer several times? (That would show some feelings towards him, no?) And then bang! he's the bad one... Kit with Ty: Why not? I like her. Best-case scenario would have been to explore Caleb/Amy, Ty/Kit relationships, and then possibly break them up. Everybody knows that Ty/Amy will end up together, so get over it (your dislike of both Caleb and Kit; BTW, I do like Ty and Amy). I just hope that the show won't stray too far from storylines of substance. The Hollywood Dumbo at the ranch? Why? Each episode now, there seems to be something a bit over-the-top. And please people, stop complaining about the dissimilarities with the book. It's a bleeping tv show BASED ON a book. And enough of, like every episode is the best/fantastic/awesome. This being said, great show, but no complacency please.
