Okay, "ages" may be an exaggeration, but given the chance any Blog Whisperer will always employ alliteration, which is the repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighbouring words or syllables, as in Time for Tim, Super Spartan, Jovial Jack... well, you get it. Click through for some cool pictures, and more!
Yes, the Blog Whisperer mandate to entertain AND educate is STILL being met! :D
Anyhow, I was going over all the photos from Heartland recently and it struck me that the series has indeed been around for a healthy time. For those of you who aren't aware, the pilot episode was filmed in the fall of 2006 and then in the spring of 2007 the delightful decision (alliteration!) was made to film 12 additional episodes, creating a first season of Heartland.
That was 5 years ago, so I thought I'd post some pictures of Amy from the pilot and from each of the five seasons and present them all together as part of this blog post. Unlike a lot of series where the characters seem to be frozen in time, Heartland's characters are aging as the seasons pass. That's a good thing too, otherwise Amy would still be 15 years old, and I don't think anyone would be expecting Ty to be seriously thinking about a proposal of marriage!
Scroll down to the bottom and enjoy them all.
More accolades for Heartland!
Speaking of enjoyment, the other day on Facebook I posted the good news about Heartland getting nominated for a Rockie Award. Well, yesterday the Alberta Film and Television Awards (The Rosies) were announced and Heartland has come away with 10 nominations this year. This time, Heartland fan Val beat me to it, but...
Congratulations to the following Albertans who will be in Calgary at the Gala Awards Show on May 12, when they will find out if they have won...

It's so great that Heartland is receiving this recognition. But really, it's hard to keep a secret when something this good is seen by so many - and for over half a decade now!
That's it for this week. Let me know what you think of showing photos from past seasons. If enough of you like this maybe I'll do it again in the future!
Have a good weekend and I hope the weather is cooperative. Me? I'm planning a trail ride on Bloggy, my trusty steed.
As always, if I get any breaking news you know I'll post it here RIGHT AWAY. Until then, or until next Thursday, imagine me riding off into the distance...

Lovely idea bw. I have always loved how the audience has been made to feel like we are growing with the heartland characters. This gives it a more realistic feel. For that one hour a week we are able to submerdge ourselves in what most of us horse people can only fantasize about; a beautiful ranch in the foothills of Alberta.
Would love to see a picture timeline of Ty through the series, and also of Ty and Amy as a couple through the series.
Keep up the great work:)

[Blog Whisperer: Let's just say it was an overly optimistic false alarm. I can categorically state that the show has NOT been picked up yet. The moment there is confirmation one way or the other, I will post it here.]

Thanks for the pics BW. I think the biggest changes in Amy were from the pilot to the first season. (Mostly looks wise.) And definitely, Season 4 to Season 5. (Looks AND character.) To me, the time between those seasons really showed the growth in Amy. It showed her transformation from teenager to adult. Don't you realize that she didn't blow up, or scream at anyone this season? She stayed calm and dealt with it as an adult, resulting with her and Ty staying together, and not getting into ANY fights. The ONLY time things were a bit sketchy between them was in 510, but that was quickly resolved as Ty realized he should trust Amy more in her decisions, while Amy realized that Ty just cares about her, and worries about her. I'm glad that she also said that she gets that, and respects that.
She has become an amazing young adult, helping others through their problems and concerns, gently and lovingly. Like when Ty's father died. Ty goes to bed that night very sour, and internally, lonely. Amy comes into the trailer, just, laying down with him, showing him that she was there for him, that someone loves him, and will help him through it. They didn't even use words in that scene. It just shows how much of a connection they have.
Or when she helped Ty after his motorcycle accident. She didn't just straight up say to him, "He's worried about you Ty and so am I!" in the forceful voice that she used, squeezing things out of him, which ticked him off, like she did in the third season after the plane crash. She approached it at a different angle, quietly helping him, approaching him by saying, "So. What can I do?" THAT, brought them SO much closer together, Amy showing Ty that she WILL help him get through things, but only when he wants her to at certain times.
ONE LAST ONE! THIS one caught my attention RIGHT AWAY. Tim has started drinking again. Lou and Jack start accusing him right away, trying to use "Tough Love" to get through to him. Amy, on the other hand, when she finds out, she just simply drives out to see him, walks up to him, giving him a hug saying, "I love you dad." She doesn't accuse him, she doesn't yell at him saying "STOP!", she doesn't threaten him, she just... I can't put it into words! But I'm sure you know what I mean.
Anyway. I just wanted to point out how much Amy has matured this season, and I want to thank the writers for that. I was getting pretty annoyed with her in Season Two where she was going through an emotional roller coaster. But I do get that that's the way young teenage girls are and that's how they deal with things. But I'm glad that she handles things much more maturely and I'm proud to have watched her grow up over the past five years...
Well! Now that my thoughts have been laid out, I hope everyone has a great weekend! Fingers crossed! Oh, and, almost forgot... LONG LIVE HEARTLAND!"

As relates to the hope that we'll get our Season 6, and to the relative truthiness of a certain cast member's related recent tweet, and the cautionary response that followed, here's one of my new favourite lines from Grandpa Jack, but reversed :>)... "Just 'cause you think somethin' is nothin' doesn't make nothin' out of somethin'."

Amber is a very pretty girl, she has one of those faces that makes one think, I should know her from someplace. I too have been told that.
I feel at present it has to be the best family show on TV.We love it. if I were to express a complaint it would be this: mind you I'm not complaining. however this thought crosses my mind occasionally. in each episode there is too much happening, different s little stories involving the actors. All are interesting. but the one hour show is too busy. I'm an Artist and we have been taught not to make our paintings too busy as it distracts. We do love the show, we are looking forward to next fall. and perhaps there can be more episodes than 5 or 6. Sincerely An old guy who loves the show.

Thank you for your efforts to maintain interest in the show. Glad about the award nominations. Well deserved. These people work very hard for the effects they acheive.
Thanks for the pictures of Amy through the years.
From the beginning she inspires confidence in her ability to help horses.
The Season 1 photo presents a looking to the future gaze, 'I can see five seasons at least!' Season 2 has a subdued 'Isn't this a beautiful white horse?' look.
Season 3 has a troubled, pleading look,'Please, please let me keep him, her.'
Season 4 is a 'let's ride down mainstreet!' look.
Finally, Season 5 says 'We're ready for those budget cuts no matter what!'

BW Love the photos. It would be great to do this for the other main characters! Photos of Ty and Amy together of the years and the course of their relationship would be wonderful too!
Congratulations to all those nominated! Much deserved. Question: Does Graham Wardle not qualify for a nomination because he is not from Alberta? As many have posted on here, his acting has continued to be outstanding this season and grown even more riveting. I think it is about time he got nominated and won something, if not a Geni. I think Heartland is long over do on some Geni nominations.

Men do we change in life are what!!! :P
Its great to see how well the show does BW. Its even better that the series has bin around for so long. It makes you wonder .... how long does it still got. The sweet and innocent Amy is long but gone. What we got in return we never thought of. A young powerfull woman with a goal, determent of that what she wants to reach in life.
I guess the looks of Amy isnt the only thing that changed. I am very much eager to find out whats going to happen next season. Will we find this determination back with Amy? Will we see her confront Ty with the ring? I guess only time will tell.
In anyway BW congrats on those nominations, it proofs heartland got a future. If you can still pull that out the hat, after 6 years!!! then it deserves a encore. and i can only say ... "CBC put that in your pipe and smoke it!!" and you can tell em that from me BW.
Ps. 1 little question though, you bin so nice to put these pictures up from Amy trough the years. Would you be so kind to do that as well for the other "main" characters, like Jack or Ty for instance. It makes me think about what changed trough the years, so realy insightfull :)

The pictures are really cool, I think it's great to go over things again and that we can see how something this awesome has matured and become something that is loved by so many people. Being a UK resident, I have them all on DVD (not season 5 yet as it is unavailable at present), but I've started watching them from the beginning; seeing how much the actors have changed is quite shocking, but they are still the adorable characters we have loved for these 5 years :-)
So far, I've got to Season 3, Episode 3 :-)

This is the deal. Heartland has really become "the brand" show for the best TV that CBC has to offer. It is an iconic show in the iconic CBC family time-slot. It is Canadian to the core in every respect, and represents the best of Canada not only at home, but increasingly around the world. It is a "posterboy" for attracting tourism to Canada. It's worth tens of millions annually in that regard alone. It's a show of the quality that could easily last 10-15 years in popularity with perennial top viewership ratings.
It wins the Canadian ratings "competition" for its time-slot week after week, year after year.
Conclusion: RELAX - THERE IS NO WAY THAT CBC WILL CANCEL HEARTLAND!

I DON'T UNDERSTAND! I read the article on the CTV News website (posted here) that stated Heartland and Republic of Doyle were on the chopping block. It indicated this decision was because of the good ratings of Artic Air. BW PLEASE COMMENT! Does CTV have its facts straight? Has the decision been made to cut Heartland?
HOW short sighted, to cut a successful 5 years running much loved show for a new, not nearly of the same caliber show, that has not fully proven its self. THose who love and enjoy watching Heartland together will not get a replacement from Artic Air. I was afraid CBC execs would just look at the bottom line - ratings and advertising - and not what was special and needed in our society - GOOD FAMILY PROGRAMMING!
Please tell me the decision has not been made!!!
Desperado wrote:

Well this is sad news I can't understand !!! CBC says Arctic Air got rave reviews for a new show,
so it will stay and Heartland will be cut because it has to make big budget cuts. Apparently Heartland requires a big budget to produce. OK

The first photo I guess is when she's talking to her grandpa after halter-breaking Spartan (I'm not sure about that one), the second photo looks like maybe one of those moments when she's sitting on the fence watching a horse and talking to Ty (I'm not sure about that one either), the third photo is from the episode when McKenzie gets married and Lisa brings the Apaloosa "Diva Girl" for Amy to work with (I think that shot might be when she finally figured the horse out and was putting her back in the paddock, but I'm not sure of the exact moment), the fourth photo is from the 2nd episode where Ty's mom and Wade were in Hudson, and this particular photo is when Amy went to see Ty at the track when she saw his mom going into a bar with Wade (Ty was supposed to be watching Lightning Dexter for Tim for the evening, and Amy watched him until Ty could get back from getting his mom), the fifth photo is from episode 409 when Amy and Ty had found Tim's stolen cattle and they along with Tim, Jack, and Lou went to get them and brought them back through town to show the RCMP officers that were supposed to be looking into it for Tim, and the sixth photo looks like it is from episode 513 "Aftermath" when Amy's working with Spartan and sees Ghost and right after that Ty sees him as well.
How did I do, BW? I love this show so much that I seem to want to watch it all the time (24/7) when I'm at home. My family sometimes seems tired of it because I watch it so much. I'm so proud of the cast and crew since they've been nominated for many awards lately, and different kinds of awards might I add. That has to say something about the show. It seems like someone has been nominated for something for Heartland every year for the past 3 years. Just for that the CBC should keep Heartland on next season and give it an 18 episode season! It's getting awesome ratings every week, it's getting nominations for awards, and it's continuing to draw more and more fans all the time. What more do you want, CBC?

Well, it's easy to see the difference in Amy through the progression of time. She's gone from being a beautiful young woman, to being an 'extremely' beautiful young woman. The more Amber in your blogs, the better IMO.;))
But i agree, you should have an Amy/Ty seasonal progression....that would be interesting.:))

i have read the comments above and noticed the most commonly asked question these past 2 weeks is .... Is there a season 6?ive been thinking that there has to be a 6th season because they cant leave a show in the middle of a story. And one of the comments said that they heard heartland was on CBCs copping block....if they cut off showing heartland id think theyd have a form of some kind of mob......when u think of it Heartland is one of CBCs most popular shows and they would lose a lot of viewers.

I just have to say that it is so cool that Amber is letting us get to know her a little better through her Facebook page and Twitter. Truthfully, it's a privilege and honor for fans when any actor opens-up like that. She's a special young woman, and at least in my family, seems not only to be "the girl next door," but through Amy, also someone who we all look at as a family member or friend. Kind of that special buddy, sister, daughter, or grand-daughter that everyone admires and is proud to know. And we feel exactly the same way about Graham. These two have that magic, both as actors, and seemingly in their real lives too. Heartland would and could not be the same (or anywhere near as wonderful) without them. I doubt the show would have gotten past the pilot without the Amy and Ty we've grown to know, love, and respect. Now if we can just get them engaged so they can live happily ever after and give us another 5+ seasons of Heartland fun and adventures!

Oh my god! I can't believe how long Heartland has been on. It seems just like yesterday my best friend Chelsey and I were hiding behind her desk in her bedroom watching Heartland on her laptop just over 5 years ago. We wanted to buy horses and go move out on a ranch so we could be just like Amy Flemming. We searched high and low for horses that could be bought by a 6th grader at the time. Well at least 1 of us is living the dream! Love you Chelsey! And also just wanted to say that Heartland is one of the best shows ever and I hope it lasts for a long time! :) :)

I am very concerned about the article too. Advertising is a big factor in these decisions. Who watches the show and what do they buy? What advertising does the show attract,etc.. I don't see how Artic Air would attract a more affluent audience than Heartland. The critics don't count for much except maybe in TO if they inspire the desirable audience to check out a show.
Heartland's biggest problem is likely its budget. It's done on a location, has a big cast and has horses which cost a lot to rent because they are trained and have to be cared for. Normally, by the sixth season, the actors have a right to expect signifigant pay increases. I don't know if a shorter season is an option. The network wants 18 episodes but may only want to pay enough for 16 or 14. Then it becomes the producer's problem.
Hopefully this can be worked out.

BW obviously knows a lot more about this than I do, but regarding a topic that seems to come-up often in posts on the blog - For young fans who write letters to the cast, don't get discouraged if you don't hear back! I am not "in the know" specifically about how Heartland handles fan-mail, but I have a friend who played a lead in a hit American show, and in general, the cast members of popular TV shows are incredibly busy and could never keep-up with answering all, or even most of, the fan-mail they get. The one thing I bet you can count on is that they try to read everything they receive and are thinking about you when they read what you've sent them, even if they don't have time to write back. I wrote one letter to Heartland a long time ago and didn't get a reply, but my guess is that if a fan keeps trying and sends a few letters, you will eventually get something back! Most actors do not take their fans and fan-mail for granted, and truly appreciate it when someone makes the effort to write them. I'm sure that is doubly the case with the cast of Heartland. Actually, I think I'll write Graham a letter today! The address is: Heartland, P.O. Box 2640, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, T2P, 2M7.

Heartland has to be back for another season! This is just too good of a program to pull off the air. There have been programs on longer than 5 years that didn't come close to being as good as Heartland. I will definitely sign a petition or do my part to keep it on for another season. Not only in Canada, are there people who want this to stay on the air, but others all over the U.S. and overseas as well. Viewers in Buffalo, NY want Heartland to stay on the air, including myself.

Hi Rita! Going to the CBC contact us page and making a comment about Heartland and keeping it is a great idea. I have done it 2 times already. There is, however, not place to do a petition.
I put a suggestion out there in the Community Forum Discussion about creating a petition online. I don't have the computer knowledge to do this, but if anyone does I think it would be a great idea, is we could get enough fans to sign it. Aany ideas anyone???
Rita, Have you used the community link here to join the conversation. I did recently and it is great!

I JUST THOUGHT I WOULD POST HERE SOME RECENT DISCUSSION ON THE "COMMUNITY FORUM" UNDER "EPISODE 518" IF YOU GO TO PAGE 56 YOU CAN READ ALL.
THE IDEA OF GETTING KRISTEN STEWART, THE HEAD OF CBC ENGLISH TELEVISON PROGRAMMING, ATTENTION HAS BEEN DISCUSSED. Organizing an online Video, an event with news coverage, and/or sending horse shoes to her with a message re keeping Heartland on the air. I think these are great ideas. PLEASE READ BELOW AND THE COMMUNTITY FORUM AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN HELP DO TO SEND A MESSAGE WE WANT TO KEEP HEARTLAND. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SET UP PETITIONS OR VIDEOS ONLINE AND AM LIMITED PHYSICALLY BECAUSE OF AN INJURY, BUT I WILL CERTIANLY GET INVOLVED WITH ANY OF THESE THINGS AND I AM GOING TO LOOK INTO GETTING A HORSE SHOE SENT TO HER. *I JUST THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD NEED TO send a horse shoe, OR HAVE IT SENT WITH A PETITION FOR IT TO HAVE IMPACT.
LETS GET ORGANIZED!
Please read below!
My Origianl Post:
Wow! I actually think that is a good idea. The real thing is getting enough people organized to do it and getting the horse shoes. Some may think I'm crazy, but I have found in life lots of people will talk about things they care about, but are hesitant or don't go the extra mile to bring about change. It might work to generate some kind of petition - I have no clue how to do this on line with fan signiatures - and print it off and send it with a horseshoe. This might be more do able. Unfortunately, I live in a big city and am not sure where to get a horse shoe. Perhaps a fan who knows how to do a petition could set it up, we can all spread the word, get signatures AND another fan, as I am sure there are many, who have a horse shoe or two (maybe one for each season + a sixth, could be sent the petition, print it off and mail both to Kristen Stewart. Maybe I'm crazy like I said, but what is the harm in actually doing this!
Anyone insterested?
REPLY:
I think we could get used horse shoes by contacting a local Farrier, or perhaps a horse stable.
As with almost everything, new horse shoes can be found on the internet, and that might be
the most convenient. Just have the internet merchant send one directly to Kirstine Stewart
at CBC. They aren't exactly cheap though, perhaps $10 + shipping/handling charges...
Several hundred boxes containing a horse shoe would make a big impression, several
thousand would be an awesome sight.
To make something like this happen, we need some people who know how to organize
such an effort, and get the word out through the news media to make it a really big deal.
Perhaps the folks who organized the petition drive could do it?
[Blog Whisperer: You should post that on the official Heartland Facebook page, too Chara!]

[Hi BW - This is that post that didn't get published that made me think the reason might be that it had a political remark or two (pretty harmless though) in it. But maybe I just forgot to hit the submit button and this is the first time you're seeing it :>)!] Here it is...
Maybe the best way for fans to convince CBC to keep Heartland going beyond Season 6 (I'm still confident that we'll get our Season 6, but possibly with fewer than 18 episodes) is for everyone to get their friends, neighbors and relatives to watch it every week. The viewership ratings for Season 5 I think averaged between 825,000 and 925,000, and maybe were slightly over 1,000,000 a couple of times. That's excellent, but if they were steadily over 1 million, that would really help. Even if they maintain their current levels, Heartland's ratings still beat-out all of the competition, including all of the commercial network shows if I'm not mistaken, for the Sunday night 7 p.m. time-slot. But we can do better, and obviously can no longer take it for granted that the show will continue indefinitely unless CBC (and maybe the government too) sees that the ratings are increasing. How about a goal of 1.5 million viewers or more for Episode 1 of Season 6? And maybe forget about being secretive, and pre-promote a Ty and Amy "Engagement" episode, and a follow-up pre-promoted "Wedding" episode at some point later in the season. I bet each of those would easily attract 1.5 - 2 million viewers! Then maybe a Paris wedding for Jack and Lisa, with a cameo role for the Canadian PM? OK, maybe I'm getting carried-away a little bit now. But, whatever works, let’s do it!
[Blog Whisperer: Hi Hally! It DID get published - but you commented on http://www.cbc.ca/heartland/2012/03/and-that-was-season-5-of-heartland.html , not this one! :) ]

Having thought the article over, I remembered the source -CTV. I think it possible that CTV would love to get attention itself by stirring up Heartland fans against the CBC thereby getting their hopes up that protests will keep the show on. If, heaven forbid, this protest failed, CTV could interview fans of the show who's disappointment would be very real and long lasting but this would be their chance to have a last stab at the CBC
How this would benefit CTV itself, I'm not sure. Would they have the financial resources to pick up Heartland? I know this happens sometimes in the US where another network picks up a show.

From what I read in the article that everyone's getting worked up about (Myself included until I read it) the shows are on the chopping block, but that just means it's a possibility. Nothing is set in stone, which is the case with any television show.

It seems that CBC only wants to keep shows on that contain violence, swearing,or sexual content.
I haven't been so hooked on a show like Heartland since back when the "Walton's" use to be on.....2 years ago i had a heart attack and even in the hospital, hooked up to wires and moniters i begged my nurses to please allow me a t.v.so i could watch Heartland...Myself and my daughter absolutely disagree of Heartland being cancelled and i for one feel like writing a letter to the head department of CBC...and asking him/her if they have children? and if they do...do they as a parent agree in allowing their kids to watch a family oriented show or something that is inappropriate for kids?....ill be here in N.B.cheering for Heartland to stay on CBC....
