THE OFFICIAL HEARTLAND BLOG

Graham Wardle has answered your questions!

Ask Graham

The second installment of the Heartland cast interviews is here. There were a TON of really great questions, so as I said last time if we didn't get to your question, there will be plenty of other opportunities in the weeks to come!

Now, Graham, over to you! Click though for more!

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hello Graham from El Salvador, Central America.......Yes we love Heartland here too!!! I extend an invitation to my country as I'm sure you could have a great experience... think about it! My question will be: What is the most challenging aspect of portraying Ty Borden and why?
Posted by: Evelyn on November 23, 2009 at 09:50 AM

A: Ty had a rough childhood, and to portray some of those emotions he has can be a challenge at times. I had a pretty normal childhood compared to him so I have to do my homework when I'm preparing for some of his interactions with his past. I do enjoy doing it though. It's difficult but I know the result will be a more interesting character.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hey Graham...just wanted to start off by saying you rock in the role of Ty! Yepper, you are totally believable and very talented, and as I am sure a lot of fans will be saying, you bring a lot into the character and now you are part of a lot of families in Canada (and world wide)! My question is: Outside of Heartland, what role would you love to do? Everyone has a role that in their minds would be a dream role, whether it's doing Shakespeare, a historical drama that's based back in the middle ages, the hero in some supercharged action flick, a comedic slapstick role or would you like to try your hand at being a villian taking over the world (just a few examples)...just kinda curious!?!
Posted by: Dalaigh on November 23, 2009 at 10:36 AM

A: First off I want to say thank you Dalaigh for your support. Much appreciated. I would love to be a part of an action film like the Bourne movies with Matt Damon. Something very realistic and current. I'm a big fan of current films that push the boundaries of what we have seen.

---------------------------------------------

Q: When did you decide you wanted to be an actor and why?
Posted by: Andreia on November 23, 2009 at 10:51 AM

A: This may sound weird but I don't think of myself as being an actor. I think of myself as someone who acts as an expression of myself. I love to create and be a part of new experiences that I can share with others. I choose to look at it this way to remind myself that I will always be me and I will do many things in my life. Acting is just what I'm doing right now. But to get back to your question, I starting acting when I was six years old in a Mattel Toys commercial. The reason I love my job is I get to create and share a character's life with an audience. And riding a motorcycle is pretty awesome too.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Graham, you are stranded on a deserted island with Amber. In what ways would Amber contribute to your survival on the island and in what ways would she be of no help at all?
Posted by: Kathryn on November 23, 2009 at 10:55 AM

A: She would be vital to my survival. I have no clue what's edible and what's poisonous. She has a wealth of knowledge about wildlife. She would probably be no help at all in the rescue effort. I bet she would want to stay there and live with the animals!

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hi Graham, I was wondering, when you're not acting, what do you like to do on your spare time? What are some of your interests and hobbies?
Posted by: Amy on November 23, 2009 at 12:43 PM

A: I like watching youtube and vimeo. Playing video games with my friends online. Writing. Taking pictures. I make short videos that I post on my vimeo site at vimeo.com/grahamwardle.

---------------------------------------------

Q: I've heard that you plan to direct your own films in the future: so what kind of films would you prefer to direct and why?
Posted by: Claire on November 23, 2009 at 01:03 PM

A: Anything current. I love progressing the current state of our society. The way we see the world and our own lives. Documentaries and inspirational films like "Into the Wild" are my kind of thing.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hello Graham :) My question for you is: You have an on-screen romance with Amber Marshall's character Amy, is that real, or purely acting?
Posted by: Samantha Stokes on November 23, 2009 at 01:16 PM

A: Amber is a very close friend of mine who I respect and care about deeply. It's not a question of real or purely acting. The reality of the situation is both scenarios are real. When I am acting I make the circumstances become real. I trick my mind into believing something is the way it is written. I believe the question is whether one chooses to live in the reality of the character or chooses to live the reality of his/her own life.

---------------------------------------------

Q: My question for you is: What is one of your favourite memories with the other cast members when behind the scenes from shooting Heartland?
It could be a funny accident or just a hilarious event.... Thanks!
Posted by: Elizabeth on November 23, 2009 at 01:59 PM

A: The scene where Lou pops the cork off the champagne bottle. I can't remember what episode but while we were filming the scene she kept popping the cork and it would fly around the room. And each time the champagne would spill out all over her hand and onto the floor. It was very difficult not to laugh. I actually don't' know how that scene worked in the end because we were always laughing.

---------------------------------------------

Q: My question is if you could have any horse on Heartland which one would you choose?
Posted by: Jessie on November 23, 2009 at 03:24 PM

A: Sugarfoot. He makes me laugh when he pulls Mrs. Bell's carriage. He's such a trooper. So small but such a big heart.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hi Graham, I really enjoy the work that you have done with Ty over the past few years. I love seeing all of the characters on Heartland maturing, and learning from mistakes. It really is amazing to watch. So, my question: Where do you feel more at home? Alberta or Vancouver?
Posted by: Phoebs on November 23, 2009 at 03:30 PM

A: Great to hear Phoebs! Glad you enjoy the show! I feel more at home in Vancouver. My family is there and it's where I spent most of my life. Although I do call the people of heartland my second family because I spend so much time with them!

---------------------------------------------

Q: My question [that is very random] is: what's your favourite food, colour and sport (to watch on tv or play)? I'm 13...
Posted by: Brooklyn D. on November 23, 2009 at 03:57 PM

A: I love random questions. Thanks Brooklyn! Favourite food? Right now I could really go for some fresh picked blackberries. Favourite colour? Green. Favourite sport to watch? Football. Favourite sport to play? I just started learning Parkour which isn't a sport yet more so an activity. Search on youtube if you haven't heard of it. You'll find some great videos that have inspired me. It's a lot of fun.

---------------------------------------------

Q: My question is: Which person on the show is most like their character? Which person is the most different from their character?
Posted by: ~*M*~ on November 23, 2009 at 06:36 PM

A: Amber. She has a whole zoo of animals at her farm. It's amazing. And for who is least like their character? I think it would have to be both Val and Ashley, played by Wanda and Cindy. They are two of the nicest people I have ever met.

---------------------------------------------

Q: On the Heartland website under your bio, it states that you love photography. What is your favourite thing to take pictures of and have you ever published any of your photographs?
Posted by: Megan on November 23, 2009 at 07:12 PM

A: A few years ago my father bought a new DSLR and left it lying on the table. I picked it up and walked around the house looking through the lens and pretending I was in a movie. Then I started taking pictures of things that made me feel something. Some things I found interesting while others I just felt their picture needed to be taken. I enjoy taking pictures of things that can evoke a feeling. I also love to play around with composition. How things are arranged in the frame change the energy of the picture. I am currently working on a website for my photographs where you can view and order prints.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hey Graham, I love Heartland, you, and all of the other actors. My question to you is: If you weren't an actor, what would your career be at the moment? Thanks so much! Keep up the good work! :)
Posted by: Sindusha on November 23, 2009 at 10:02 PM

A: If I weren't acting in Heartland I would probably be working behind the camera in some way. Photography, directing or editing for that matter. I love the whole process of filmmaking.
Thanks Sindusha!

---------------------------------------------

Q: My question for you is how are you similar and different from Ty as a person?
Posted by: Lara on November 23, 2009 at 11:26 PM

A: There are choices Ty will make as a character that I don't agree with but I do understand his motives. Ty is younger than I am and I see much of how I use to be in him. I try to bring as much of myself into Ty while keeping him genuine to his past and current circumstances. I am a huge fan of horses and motorcycles now because of Ty. So now we have that in common!

---------------------------------------------

Hey, Graham! I am a BIG fan of the books and the tv show and I am also from the US. Ok, here is my question. Did you ever think Heartland would ever turn out as big as it is now, and how has it changed your life?
Posted by: Amanda on November 23, 2009 at 05:12 PM

A: I knew the show was unique and had great substance. The challenge was to see if we could portray that to an audience and would they want to watch it. I am so very grateful that so many people from around the world are enjoying the show. It is truly amazing.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hi Graham! What was your favourite season/episode to film?
Posted by: 3blindmice on November 24, 2009 at 08:50 AM

A: Episode 201. I got to run away from the biker guys in downtown Calgary. Wicked fun! There are a few episodes of this season that are favourites of mine as well but they haven't aired yet!

---------------------------------------------

Q: What was it like working with Megan Follows in episodes seven and eight in season 3?
Posted by: Guenivere on November 24, 2009 at 11:40 AM

A: She is a very humble and gracious woman. Extremely talented and fun to be around. It was a highlight of this year for sure. I learned a lot from acting with her.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hey Graham! Will you marry me? xD No, no, I'm just kidding. My pony would get jealous. Anyways, on to the real question! I'm just wondering, if you ever had the chance to write your own episode of Heartland, what do you think you'd have more of? Comedy, Romance, Drama, Action, Horses, Vehicles, a combination of a few, etc...?
Posted by: Aprilies on November 24, 2009 at 12:13 PM

A: I would write and an action/comedy episode. It would have to involve a miniature horse race with Jack and Tim. Haha! On a more serious side I would love to write one with Caleb's parents. See what they are like and how Caleb got to be who he is now.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Which celebrity would make you scream like a girl if you met them on the red carpet???
Posted by: Corinna on November 24, 2009 at 12:18 PM

A: Ahah! I would love to meet Zooey Deschanel. She seems like a very genuine person.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Did your parents or your friends have a nickname for you when you were a kid? If so what was it?
Posted by: Sarah.M on November 24, 2009 at 12:42 PM

A: My mom called me Gray. My dad called me Mr. Graham son. My siblings called me "Graaayy-Ummmmm" That would be when I did something to make them mad. My friends call me Gram, Wardle, Wartortle, Gram Cracka or GC for short, Gray-Han! (Said in a loud booming voice as if I was a warrior) G-Dubbs, and G-Funk. I don't know where they all came from but I guess I have a lot of nicknames.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hey Graham! I can't believe you're reading this... I'm Brazilian, and I just LOVE the show, and Ty is my favourite character... Even I just saw the first season (the only that aired here...), Heartland is my passion anyway! Great work for everyone and specially for you! My question is: What's your favourite book?
Posted by: Débora on November 24, 2009 at 05:08 PM

A: From Brazil? That's awesome! Glad you enjoy the show Débora!
My favourite book would be "Wonderland Avenue" by Danny Sugerman. It has a more mature theme but It was a very insightful book for me. For me, the story demonstrated how a person's circumstances could take control of their life without them knowing it. Also how childhood dilemmas can follow you through your life infecting your decision-making.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hey Graham. Okay a question, a question. There have been so many good ones asked already but I think I've got one that hasn't been asked. What types of scenes or emotions to you find it hardest to portray on screen? Which one are the easiest?
Posted by: Deanna on November 24, 2009 at 07:00 PM

A: The easiest are the ones where Ty is goofing around or having fun. Because who doesn't like to have fun? And the hardest would be the dark scenes or emotional moments that come from Ty's past. They take a bit of energy to make it authentic.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Okay so my question is not really acting related at all. I am from a little town in the province of SASKATCHEWAN!! (which is the best!) and since the Riders are gonna be in the Grey Cup final my question is : Who is your favourite CFL team?? : I personally think that the Riders are the best but still... excited to hear your answer.;)
Posted by: Mairi on November 24, 2009 at 06:00 PM

A: Well I'm from BC so I might be a little biased but The Lions are my favourite team! But I secretly cheered for Saskatchewan on Sunday. :D

---------------------------------------------

Q: Are doing kissing scenes with Amber uncomfortable with all of the cameras around?
Posted by: Gillian on November 24, 2009 at 06:15 PM

A: It can be uncomfortable portraying any emotion on camera. I'm lucky to be working with such great people who make my job easier by giving me the space to do my job. The trick is to block out the cameras and crew that are around you. Then you are able to be present in the moment and not be self conscious about the cameras or the people watching.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hey Graham! Do you do your own stunts for the show? If so, have you ever gotten hurt while filming?
Posted by: Peg on November 26, 2009 at 10:59 AM

A: Almost all of them. I have a great stunt double, Ross. He does all of my falling off horse stunts. They won't let me do those. Ross also does any other stunts that are too risky. We have a great stunt Co-ordinator, Tom Eirikson, who makes sure all the actors are safe. So no broken bones yet!

---------------------------------------------

Q: My question for you is which actor/actress has influenced you the most in your career?
Posted by: Meaghan on November 26, 2009 at 02:58 PM

A: Heath Ledger, Sean Penn and Kate Winslet. They are some of the most genuine people I find to watch. I find their acting to be very truthful and authentic. "Rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, give me truth." Henry David Thoreau. This quote has been the biggest inspiration for me as of late.

---------------------------------------------

Q: Hi Graham! Who is the funniest actor (or actress) to work with on the show? By the way, thanks for what you bring to the show. I think you've done a very good job with the changing of your character from season one until now. :)
Posted by: JumperCowgirl on November 26, 2009 at 07:20 PM

A: Cindy Busby who plays Ashley. She is hilarious! And thank you for your support!

---------------------------------------------

Thanks to everyone who posted questions... bye for now!

[Blog Whisperer: Sorry Macy (and Lexi, above, too), the window for asking Graham questions was last week - these are his answers. But you still have a chance to ask Jessica Amlee a question!]

Hello, Looking through all these question and answers I learned you enjoy photography. That is my biggest passion right now ... well you know after horses that is. Are you thinking of doing something big with that in the future ? If you are any better then me I'd like some pointers. I own a Canon Rebel and am in love with it ! Such a beautiful Portrait camera. So far I'm taking pictures to make people look at that item as a totally diffrent view. My favourite subject right now to take pictures of are horses, they all have unique personalities. Most of them are very photogenic :)

Hi Graham,
I just want to say, I love to see you so much, I know you are acting as Ty but it's the exact replica of my son, and you also look so much alike it's amazing... Some times, I felt so much like telling you; ''Wake up son... Talk to Amy, tell her you love her, she loves you too'' ha,ha,ha...
Your doing such a great job that I would be so so disapointed to see you leave Heartland, I don't know if I would still be interested in watching it. I truly hope you always stay with Heartland and Amy. Keep up the good work, you are intertaining so many people and are changing lives. You are making your mark in this world, hope you fullfill all your dreams, you deserve it. You will never bee forgotten... Good Luck. . .

rarestorm wrote:

Ty and Amy are the worst couple ever. There is no chemistry, no spark. They are suppose to be teenagers madly in love; yet they act like an old couple who can only dish out a peck on the cheek once or twice a day. Ty should have stuck with Kit. Likewise, does Lou actually dig that oil guy? She sure doesn't show it.

DDW wrote:

Posted December 15, 2009 6:11 PM

Hold your horses, rarestorm, just because Ty & Amy don't jump into the barn's loft for a quick romp in the hay doesn't mean they have "no chemistry, no spark!!" Quite the contrary, this TV couple is by far the most realistic portrayal of teenagers in love NOT LUST like so many other "teen" couples on TV are.
Kudos to the actors, writers & producers who recognize the intelligence of us viewers by developing real characters in real-life settings with real solid story lines that we can actually believe and relate to! We watch Heartland for just that reason because it is NOT another steamy stupid soap opera with couples (teen or otherwise) changing bed partners every week as the main story line!! You're intitled to your opinion, as I am mine, but Ty & Amy are GREAT!

rarestorm wrote:

"this TV couple is by far the most realistic portrayal of teenagers in love"

Really?? I'm guessing that DDW is over 40. They sure don't look like the teenagers I know. When they walk side-by-side they usually don't even hold hands. Sorry, they'll all have to try harder to make this into a convincing romance. Or not, if Ty is, well ... you know.

jake wrote:

Posted December 16, 2009 9:50 PM

Rarestorm yes! Finally, somebody gets it! Ty and Amy are obviously a bad match. What with Amy always sulking, and Ty trying to figure out what he did wrong, and how to get out of this dull (very dull!!) relationship. If it weren't for Jack, Ty would have bailed ages ago. Why else would he have hopped into a plane with a guy who learned how to fly last week.

HI GRAHAM ! ! ! ! I'm Carly from Vancouver and I am a MAJOR Heartland fan! LOve the show to death, and unfortunately I will have to disagree on the latest Ty and Amy inputs! I think Ty and Amy are the perfect match, even if the have some hard times together. They always get through it. Though I maybe can agree on the fact that they may have to try a little bit harder on making the love more convincing. I can't wait for "Eye of the Wolf" to air on Jan.3rd! They left everything totally hanging in the air!! Though I have to admit that as much as I want to see it, I am a bit scarede top find out what ends up happening.

Jenny wrote:

Posted December 31, 2009 9:01 AM

I agree in some ways with a lot of the people who are saying that Ty and Amy have no spark...but it is obvious they love each other and even though they arent like getting sexual doesnt mean they arent in love. Ive watch the Show One Tree Hill and some of the stuff they do on there is totally unbelievable but sex does not always equal love. I think that they have portrayed the characters very well in this show and they mke it more believeable

heey Graham,
first of i would just like to say is that you are an amazing actor you play such a good part in Heartland, and you and Amy make an adorable couple :).
but i would like to know is how long have you known how to ride, and what has been the most exciting thing for you on this show?

Hey! i must confess that i found out about the show on monday and by thursday i had already seen until episode 9 of the third season. its awsome. anyways my question is: how old is ty in the show and how old are you? also you and amber have this amazing chemistry together. did you have to work that out or it was there since you met her? i guess it ended up being more than one question.

[Blog Whisperer: Sorry Marilyn, the questions closed on this one several weeks ago - we're moving on to other cast members now!]

You play an amazing part, and execute it with tremendous talent! I really enjoy Heartland! All of the characters have such chemistry, I wish that Heartland was being filmed here in Ontario, at least could be closer to my absolute favorite television show!

Hey Graham! Just wanted to say that you are such a good actor!
Um, I have 2 questions though as well: 1: Did you learn how to ride a horse just for the shows of Heartland? Or did you know before you got the part?
2. What are your favourite scenes, and your favourite episodes that you are in?
Keep up your great work, and I can't wait to see the next episode! (You left me on a cliff hanger! lol!)

Hey I was just looking over the Q & A from Graham. I saw that Megan asked "On the Heartland website under your bio, it states that you love photography. What is your favourite thing to take pictures of and have you ever published any of your photographs?"
and Graham answered "A few years ago my father bought a new DSLR and left it lying on the table. I am currently working on a website for my photographs where you can view and order prints."

Anyways.... I was wondering if anybody knew what the website is called where I could view his photographs and order prints. Thanks so much!

[Blog Whisperer: I bet it's not up yet, but I'll ask him!]
