Episode 14 - Sunday February 15

Episode 214

On February 15 at 7:00pm (7:30 in Newfoundland) Ty is forced to deal with things in his past he would rather forget when Clint Riley - his old probation officer - brings two troubled kids, Tara and Badger, to Heartland for a weekend of teambuilding and discipline. Click through for pics and more...

Clint figures that since Heartland was so beneficial to Ty, how can the experience on the ranch not help these two? Of course things do not always run as smoothly as planned. The two new arrivals have a deep impact upon Heartland, and especially have an effect on Mallory, who is assigned to give the pair riding lessons.

Meanwhile, Val asks for Jack's help with a deeply personal matter, Lou's feelings for Peter are still in play, and Amy learns something about Ty she did not know. There is a lot happening in Episode 214, entitled "Do or Die."

As seems to be my usual habit, I was still blaze (still with an accent on that e) about this new episode. Delinquent kids. Yippeeeee. And then I got a little more information. And I took a look at the photos. And.... I'm soooooooo hyped!!! Seriously, I can't wait. I have no true idea what's going to happen, but I can't wait. EEEEE!!! What would be really funny would be if delinquent boy--Badger?--fell for Mallory, and then him and Jake got into a fight. Haven't seen mini-cowboy for a while, so that could be pretty good. Anyway, I'm sure whatever HEARTLAND has come up with will be equally good--or better!!

I can't wait to see what happens with everybody! I hope ATy and Amy get back together though, I hate Caleb and Kit! The first thing that popped into my head when I read that Amy finds something about Ty, I thought, what if she flips out again because he didn't tell her, she better not do that though! I ove Amy but she tends to overeact about things, but then again I do that too! lol Anyway she better not!

I live in the states and happened upon Heartland via the CBC's website. Since it isn't possible to view CBC vids from here, I had hoped to purchase the Heartland vids from the CBC's shop. Sadly, the series isn't for sale yet...so...I have been scrounging bits and scraps from the internet and absolutely LOVE the show! Man, it is too bad all of the media in the US is owned by large corporations...quality, well written, message-oriented programs like Heartland would never survive the corporate censors and the corporations would never give such a program the time it would need to build a solid following. Anyway, I hope you folks in Canada realize just how fortunate you are to have quality public-funded television like the CBC and meaningful programming like Heartland. If not, come spend a few days here and try to suffer through the absolute rubbish being pumped across our airwaves. Finally, I am happy to hear Heartland is being given a third season...woohoo! It is time for CBC to offer the vids for sale, eh?

I know for fact that Amy and Ty will be back by the end of the season. DUH! Kit and Caleb can go to hell! LOL! I don't like them. They are so perfect for each other. I want to see Mallory more. What the hell happened to Scott? Did he just disappear off the face of the earth? And what about Jake? Anyway.... I know this episode will be amazing! I'm pretty sure I know what Ty will tell Amy. If it's what I'm sure it is, everyone will love it ;). Anyway....LOVE THE SHOW!!!! Keep it up. Can't wait for season 3! TY AND AMY FOREVER!!!!!!!

I thought that when they were on the bench that after it showed Lou and Peter I thought that it would show Amy and Ty like talking about hurting Kit or something. Ty looked really sad on the bench. Maybe he broke up with kit!!! Wait!!!! He shouldn't be sad about something like that!!!!!!! Like Kit!!!!!!!!!!!! I was really hoping that Amy would dump Caleb, but Caleb's face was really sad. and that makes me feel really guilty. Well anyway I gotta go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=]

OMG THIS WAS THE BEST EPISODE SO FAR!!! I loved it. Badger was soooo cute he's officially the best character so far. Mallory looked so as a goth. Tara was pretty cool for a delinquent, haha. I liked the last scene with Tara and Badger and then Amy and Ty, so cute. My rating 10/10 i could watch this episode over and over again. :)

This week's episode, written by Mark Haroun, titled Do Or Die made TC smile just a little. I've mentioned it before in the past, and I will again: Neon Rider!

'Are you a troubled teen looking to get that monkey off your back? Try working out your problems on horseback. In this series, therapist Michael Terry opens his B.C. ranch to at-risk youths, all of whom must relinquish their delinquent side and rehabilitate their lives. It's through chores and the interpersonal relationships they build that the kids really get down to earth and realize what the world has in store for them.' (ripped from the TVtropolis Neon Rider page.)

If that premise sounds remotely familiar after watching Do or Die, you're not alone.

Welcome to the Misadventures of Tara, the Hippophobe Goth-girl, and Badger, the Mute Pyro-Boy. This dastardly duo packs a mean punch! Watch out for their secret weapons, which include Tara's peanut butter and sarcasm, and Badger's cigarette lighter and pointy hook.

Heartland Ranch just seems to keep attracting trouble, doesn't it?

I'll return later with an in-depth review/recap.

And why is there no episode next week?

Thanks guys!

Tonight's episode was great! I really liked the the delinquent kid Badger! I hope they keep him on the show. He is REALLY cute.
I am interested to know what happened to him to make him stop talking? Even though he was supposed to be a "bad kid" he was really sweet.
He seemed like he was really good with the horses too....maybe he'll become a trainer at HEARTLAND? That would be cool. I think he should stay and open up about what his Step Dad did to him. Seems as though Ty could be of some help to him after tonight's episode.

There are certain words we use over and over again in life. "Please." "Thank you." "Sorry." "Awesome Heartland episode". If CBC keeps it up, those last three are going to become the most-used words across the nation! Because, seriously, dudes, this was one Twe-awesome episode.

To me, HEARTLAND is all about the people. Forget the darn nags. Forget the scenery. This is the story of Jack, of Val, of Ashley, of Kit, of Caleb, of Lou, of Mallory, of Ty, of (well duuhh!) Amy, of--need I go on? The fact is, I love all these characters. They're what make or break episodes for me, and they most certainly 'made' this one. Sure, nothing really dramatic happened this time. No shoot-ups, no baracades, no horse jumping (though there was some coffee dumping). But, over and over, I heard myself saying "aawwww", or cheering a character on. Lou is just awesome. How she dealed with the snake scare attempt was absolutely perfect, and I salute the writers (I would if I knew how to salute properly, anyway). And Val? I hate her most of the time, but there's these odd moments where I feel so sorry for her. This episode was one of those moments. What can I say? Val is superbly acted. And of course the Ty-revelation was great--I've been wondering that from episode one! CBC played it fairly safe, there--they chose a crime which, clearly, no one would be very shocked about, despite it being shocking. To put it more clearly, we don't blame Ty for almost murdering a man, because that man 'deserved' it. It's not a very original TV crime, but it passes. What else did I love? Ashley eating whipped cream, Mallory the goth, Badger helping Goth Girl to feed Copper, Val asking Jack for his help, Ash crying on Caleb's shoulder (if that guy thinks "nothing" is going on between the two of them, he's got to take a second look), Peter's coffee mug (okay, I love Peter point blank)... on that Peter note, I think he's going to be more long-lasting. Why? Well, if he was going to be a three episode fling, CBC wouldn't have taken the time to have Lou ponder whether or not to even speak to the guy, or make the relationship so difficult. It would be another Macho Mark scenario. So, hopefully Precious Pete is here to stay a while!!

Anyway, I could go on for a while, but my point is: ... Well, I don't really have a definite point, except... Thank you for the Awesome Heartland episode. PLEAAASE give us another!! And.... sorry for...well, nothing, really, so there goes my cool ending...

So now Kit doesn't trust Ty entirely, and Amy doesn't trust Caleb (and with good reason; the character Caleb reminds me a few guys I knew in rural Ontario that played girls in the same way, and more than once I had to help clean up the mess -.- ). Seeing as relationships are built on trust, and Ty has shown Amy how much he trusts her (important to note that he trusts Amy over Kit), it's more than a little obvious that Ty and Amy are on course to get back together (and one can't blame Amy for taking so long to forgive Ty for hurting her at the end of the first season). Ty will need to drop Kit though, and my bet is that that might be dealt with next episode. All that's left really is for Amy to trust Ty again, so, in the next episode, either she will, or Ty will give her another reason for her to not trust him again (maybe he'll lose his temper and become violent again, or perhaps Amy'll manage to calm him which can, counter-intuitively, solidify a relationship). My bet is on the latter; it is a drama series, after all. ;-)

And Mallory talks...a lot. Almost too much; very annoying in any case. I'll wager that Jessica Amlee isn't the same normally, and in that case, she's done a fantastic job portraying Mallory. >.>

Okay, Okay!!!! Ty is back! Was that bad ass charm or WHAT!!!!!!!???? The only thing......... HE"S CHEATING ON KIT!!!! The Bugger! He's starting to show that he doesn't really care that much about her, and i think she's starting to catch on. But even so, he really shouldn't have hugged Amy like that!!!!FUME!
Besides that, it was a really cool-mixed episode. It had a bit of every thing. Mallory and the goth girl were so funny how they got along.
I think it was hot when Ty slammed Badger up against the wall! OOOhhh Muscle! And my sister thinks it was hot when Badger was attacking Ty with the baling hook! OOOHHH juvinile delinquints! Oh and i love him and all, but please give Ty/Graham some riding lessons! He's not that bad... but he's not that good...you know?

Till next week, Raychel

WOW, AWESOME EPISODE - in my opinion, this was the BEST episode of the season!! Way to go Heartland script writers!!!

How the whole thing with the delinquent kids turned out - how Ty was able to communicate with and get through to Badger, and how Mallory was able to form an unexpected bond with Tara - was just great.
It was also awesome to see Ashley caring about her mother - it looks like it took one of them getting sick to begin some healing between them. It was great to hear Ashley say, 'I don't was to fight anymore'...what a relief. I really like how Jack set that one up.
And YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS....TY and AMY TOGETHER at the end!!! FIINNNNAAALLLLY!!!! That's what we want to see!

Oh, and it was also real nice to see Amy and Ty actually doing some riding (going after the loose horses)...

Way to go Heartland!!! Keep it up!!

This episode was, well, crazy and a little bit stupid. The judge must have been over-rated when he gave them probabtion. Tara and Badger should have been locked in a cell a loooonnnggg time ago. Or drown them in a river and say it was an accident, since they're nutty enough to do the things they did. And who's Amy to tell Caleb that Ashley can't stay with him, she doesn't own him, they're not together. Ty and Kit won't last long, it seems she will probably dump him later on, the don't have the most close relationship. A little distant if you ask me. And of course Lou was being her usual self, bossy controlling on and on... And Mallory? For once I was actually surprised at how dumb and stupid she could be, listening to the goth queen that likes to tazer people. And Ty lashing out at Badger over a cigarette butt thrown at him "You can't smoke here! You can't smoke here!" We get it already. Tsk. Tsk. Temper, temper. We we FINALLY got to here what mysterious act got Ty on probabtion, it was quite obvious he beat someone to a pulp. Amazing how his stepfather never came into the picture. Well, overall a bad episode, mental kids, who knew?

Wow great show! Hopefully Caleb falls for Ashley so Amy and Ty won't be interrupted lol. Ty and Amy didn't get back together yet but it's getting close. Hopefully Ty let's Kit off nicely so he can get back with Amy. Nice to see that the problem children are no longer problems and that Ty started to bond with Badger since they have alittle something in common. But I don't like how Lou is giving in to Peter (Oil Guy). Anyway the show was great! Very good ending, always nice to see Amy and Ty getting closer and closer at the end of every show. Oh and upload the episode on the site!!! I want to watch it again!! lol.

I agree with you Deanna, Kit and Kaleb are soooooo last year! I watched it yesterday and it was great. I can't believe that Ty told amy why he was on probation. I think they're going to get together. I hope its in the next episode. Do we have to wait another 2 weeks again for some stupid lacrosse tournament or something like that like last time? (I hope not!) CBC, could you at least show the previews for the next episode? It is so suspenseful waiting for the previews.

Congratulations to Mark Haroun, this episode's writer, on your Canadian Authors Association's Emerging Writer Award! Well-deserved! Your talent certainly shows in this episode. Jack and Ty's relationship seems to be the foundation for Ty's success. Jack seems to be the only one who can really help Ty learn to deal with all that has happened to him. It's good to see Amy maturing a little, giving time and attention to Ty instead of making demands and running away. A very touching story with some growth on everyone's part, Ashley and her Mom, Mallory taking responsibility for someone else, and Lou realizing that she is not the only one in charge in a relationship. Great story!

Well, I am waiting for TC's review so I can know what happened. I hate being in the United States and not being able to watch it on Sundays at 7! They won't even let us buy it on itunes.

I love the show. I just have one request, would they please give Caleb a real storyline! He's been on the show for half a season now and I still don't know what he does, does he still work at Heartland? And Caleb and Amy have zero chemistry so watching him pine after her is laughable. Give him a storyline or move him on...they must have had a reason for keeping him on the show right? Am I alone in this?

I thought this was the best episode ever !!! The best part was the very end when Amy and Ty hug. That was a great moment when they were watching Badger and Tara finally connect too. Badger is sooo cute !!! But why did he let the horses loose? I kinda don't get that part. But the show was awesome this week.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE EPISODES!! I loved it right from the start when tara and badger stole Ty's truck. I was kinda sad when tara said that stuff about badger to mallory, and then he was hiding behind the tree. I had a feeling he was going to run away after that and i was right. I don't really think that they should have lied about what really happened with the kids though. Badger letting all those horses out and Ty not even telling Jack what happened? I loved at the end when badger started to talk and then he and tara took a walk. And when ty and Amy hugged it finished off an awesome episode perfectly. I WANT TY AND AMY TO GET BACK TOGETHER SOOOOO BAD!!!!!

Awsome episode i really liked how Ty and Amy huged at the end. I really think that Ty and Amy are more like boyfriend and girlfriend then Ty and kit are.
when Ty and kit were at maggie's and Ty was doing his math and not paying attention to kit i think that made kit a little mad. Then kit shut the book and said that's all the math i can handle for today. and Ty said sorry i just got something on my mined i think that is what he said. then kit asked what is it then Ty said why don't you pick the desert. i think that is how it went. so i think that kit or Ty will bump one another. when are they putting the episode up on the site i hope soon because i like watching the episodes again so please can you guys put it on the site soon

(:OH and that guy that played as Badger looks cutie but not as cutie as TY:)

(:LOVE HEARTLAND A BIG FAN JORDAN:)

That was by far my favorite Heartland Episode of Season 2, i had to download it on iTunes so i can watch it on my iTouch!=]

Well..Clint Riley, an old friend of Jack & Ty's haha.
Clint[Ty's old probabtion officer] brings Tara & Badger to Heartland, for a weekend.
He looks up at Ty as the "Poster Boy" for these probation kids....
Already we are off to a bad start.....
Clint makes up a schedule for Lou to use for the kids.
Clint claims "What trouble could they possibly get into?"
Tara puts peanut butter on a muffin, making Clint's throat swell up, so he cannot stay the weekend at the Dude Ranch with the Kids.
In the End all is good & Badger & Tara happen to have been able to deal with something in their lives...
The ranch must have been successful....=P

Tara & Badger.
Badger never talks, he likes Tara but she doesn't know it...OhEmmGee!!=D

Back for Part 2 of my skilled re-cap of Sundays Epsiode: Do or Die. =D

So we all watched Do or Die right? Good.
So i don't need to give a little info? I can just finish where I left off.

Soo..Ty's crime, I figured it had something to do with what had happened to Badger, cuz that is what set Ty off.
Ty scared me again with the whole beating-up Badger about smoking....Man that scared me.
Good thing Amy was there or who knows what Ty would've done.=[

Amy & Ty.
Wow.=D
Amy has matured & has told Ty that she wants to UNDERSTAND.
No more demanding & running away. She wants to help Ty, to understand why he was being so weird
Ty tells her how he ended up on probation. Some thing he has never told anyone before.
Ty trusts Amy more than he trusts his own girlfriend, relationships are built on trust. ♥
The was quite the intimate so-called "friendly" hug there at the end....=]
I think when Ty is with Amy like that he just forgets about Kit, he obviously doesn't show much care or attention to her.
I kind of agree with Raychel...Ty is somewhat cheating on Kit, but Kit doesn't know it.
The was great foreshadowing there at the end with Amy & Ty they are on-course to get back together I think....=D

Will Amy trust Ty again....? [i don't blame her for taking 2-3 episodes to forgive & calm down after what Ty did in Ep.208-209]
Or will Ty just show her another reason that she shouldn't trust him? Will he hurt her, once again? Will Amy hurt him?
Or... Will they finally talk about their obvious feelings for each-other?

Mallory & Tara.
Assigned as a riding instructor Mallory does none other than make me laugh.=D
Unexpected bond between them there. Glad Mallory made a friend though, Tara seems like a genuine girl under all that make-up & attitude.
Tara makes fun or Mallory saying Mallory's life must be soo perfect.
Mallory showing her backbone saying "My life is so not perfect."
Loved how Tara thinks Mallory was her hero when Mallory informed her that she had kissed Ty.
I laughed so hard at the end when Mallory became "Goth" & Tara was on Copper.=P

Caleb & Amy.
Caleb asks Amy to trust him, that nothing is going on between him & Ashley.
Well whipped cream fights, Ashley crying on Calebs shoudler.
Calb saying "You've got Me"
IS HE THAT BLIND!!! =[
So glad they are over now.

Ashley & Val.
Didn't surprise me that Jack called Ashley to get her to drive her mom.
Glad that they made-up somewhat... ♥

In the end:
Well Ty was able to get through to Badger, which I am extremely happy about.=D
Amy & Ty have a new understanding in their relationship.
Ty seems to be pushing Kit away, & reeling in Amy closer [literally, the HUG was something]
Amy has matured quite a bit since the beginning of Season 2.
Mallory is as funny as ever & has made a friend.
Val & Ashley are on the mend.
Caleb is GONE!!!! =D i hope...
Kit & Ty's relationship is on the rocks...
Kit doesn't trust Ty entirely, Ty trusts Amy entirely
Jack is still the rock of HeartlandBack for Part 2 of my skilled re-cap of Sundays Epsiode: Do or Die. =D

Episode 14- February 15,
I don't mean to complain, but I was just wondering why the Heartland episode number 14(season 2) has not be posted on the website. I love Heartland and since I was not able to watch the episode on Sunday night I wanted to watch it on the website. Most of my friends watched it on Sunday and I want to see for myself what happened instead of hearing about it second hand because I was told that it was amazing.
Thanks,
Emily

[Moderator: Hi Emily. Actually, I did announce why it hadn't been posted, in response to a comment further up on this very page.]

As an adult viewer wanted to add my congrats for a really well-written and superbly acted episode. Enjoyed learning a bit more of Ty's past and seeing him connect with the "guests" this week, very well portrayed by Graham. However, the scenes with Val Stanton coming to Jack for help and then ultimately accepting Ashley's help, were outstanding. Well done, Heartland, and very glad to hear the show will be back for a third season!!

And welcome back, once again, to another installment of TC's Heartland Recap, complete with those annoying and irrelevant digressions no one really cares about.

I had to admit when I first saw the preview for Do or Die, I thought to myself: Unoriginal (as doubtless you have all seen how readily I've compared it to another now-defunct Canadian TV series known as Neon Rider). I also thought Do or Die would be one of those Filler Episodes where nothing much would happen, and that it would be a very contained episode.

Well. Humblest apologies to Mark Haroun. This is a notable episode for several reasons, and I'll get into them in detail for all of you folks who are unfortunate enough not to live somewhere above the 49th parallel, or in some lucky foreign country that Heartland is being marketed to. Oh, of course I hope my fellow Canadians won't mind my ramblings...

Here's Part I, since I can't hope to get everything all summarized in one post. I think it worked rather nicely last time.

Our previously on Heartland blurb reminded us that Clint Riley, Ty's probation officer, was pleased with his progress at Heartland and that Ty had successfully completed his probationary period. We were also reminded of the rift between a contrite Caleb and a disbelieving Amy. And in case we weren't paying attention, Ashley Stanton had another falling out with her mother, Val. Last previous plot point recounted: Lou discovering that her on-line beau 'Peter' is really P.W. Morris, owner of Bedford Oil, and mortal enemy of Alberta ranchers.

Adventures in Babysitting

Okay, the episode starts off on a relatively harmless note. Ty's trying to fix his old truck with Kit and Amy's assistance. They're successful with the repairs, and Kit teasingly says Ty ought to trick the old automobile out with a spoiler and supercharged engine, et al. Ty counters that chicks dig it just the way it is. Amy looks a little uncomfortable at the exchange. She notices that Clint Riley has just driven up to the ranch, and she informs Ty. When Kit asks who Clint is, he hedges.

“Ty's old pro-” Amy starts to say.
Professional wrestler,” Ty interrupts, and says he's an old friend from Calgary. He gives Kit a peck on the cheek and heads off to meet Clint. Kit looks unsure about his answer, and Amy chooses not to contradict Ty's little white lie.

In the kitchen, Jack and Lou discuss with Clint the itinerary he has planned for the kids he's brought to Heartland for 'rehabilitation' and 'structure'. They've apparently already been settled into the cabins the night before, and Clint tries to allay Lou's fears that he's left them alone and unsupervised. He doubts there's little trouble they could get into out in the middle of nowhere.

Man. If Clint thought that the kids he'd brought to Heartland were going to behave themselves...EPIC FAILURE.

Meet Tara and Badger, who immediately find ways to amuse themselves by burning stuff. Ty and Amy discover one of the wooden deck chairs on fire when they go to collect the delinquents – and the delinquents are nowhere in sight.

Cue Opening Credits.

Ty handily outs the flames with an extinguisher, while Amy confirms that the cabins are empty, and that none of the horses are missing. They conclude the kids couldn't have gone far without horse or...truck...and they watch in dismay as Tara and Badger commandeer the truck Ty's just managed to get back in working order.

Amy calls ahead to Jack, and he and Clint drive up to the access road to cut off the fleeing delinquents. An unrepentant Tara pulls to a stop and hops out, calling out to Clint that they were merely heading out to rustle up some breakfast. Badger simply nods in agreement, but offers to verbal reply. Clint just seethes, but saves his admonition for when they're all back at the house.

Clint catalogues their list of offenses while Tara just sits and scowls at the dining table. Badger just looks almost like a wounded puppy. Clint wants Tara to apologize to Lou, but she balks at the request. She complains that the cabins weren't heated, so that's why they built their little 'campfire'. Lou counters that when the cabins are cold, most people build such fires inside, in the thing called a fireplace.

Tara then says that they weren't about to stay inside due to a vermin infestation. She prompts Badger to show them what was 'found' in the cabin. The boy produces a snake, which he leaves writhing on the table. Clint swallows nervously, but Lou looks unimpressed. She easily handles the 'vermin', letting it curl around her hands. “I grew up on this ranch,” she says, “do you really think I'm afraid of a little bull snake?” She looks pointedly at Tara, refusing to be intimidated. “You're gonna have to do better than that,” Lou continues, “there is only one thing at this table anyone should be scared of: and that is me.”

Yup. If Tara had thought she'd be able to freak out her 'wardens' at Heartland with a little snake...(yes, you guessed it) EPIC FAILURE!!

Good on Lou for not letting some punk kids push her around on her own turf. Personally, I detest snakes, but Lou took the right approach without being overly bossy about it. Glad to see she's not a stereotypical 'girl' about the snake, too. (Thanks, Mark!)

While Clint gets up to go help Lou dispose of the snake, Tara digs into her pocket and pulls out a small packet of peanut butter. Seems innocuous at first, until we see what it does to Clint.

In the meantime, Caleb once again tries to worm his way back into Amy's good graces. While she's mucking out the stalls, he asks if she wants to go for a ride, capitalizing on one of the last pleasant days before Winter sets in. She responds by reminding him he has a 'house guest' (namely Ashley) he ought to get back to.

Caleb swears that in spite of appearances to the contrary, there's nothing going on between him and Ashley. He apologizes for lying, and admits he should have told Amy about the living arrangement earlier. Amy believes Caleb should ask her to leave, and declares she doesn't trust Ashley. Caleb tells Amy that Ashley has nowhere else to go, and if she can't trust Ashley, she should at least trust him. He says that all Ashley needs is a few more days to figure things out. “Until then...” he says. “Yeah. 'Until then', I'm just supposed to 'trust you',” Amy repeats.

Caleb again asks her if she wants to go for a ride. She declines, but says if he has nothing better to do, he can help feed the horses. He's agreeable to the task, and smiles all the way to the feed bins. Watch Amy smile after him, too, as if she's just on the verge of actually giving the guy a second chance...

Back in the kitchen, Clint appears to be in some distress. He asks Lou if there were any peanuts in the muffins he ate, and she responds in the negative, since they try to be sensitive to possible allergies their guests may have. Clint swears he tasted something 'nutty' in the last bite he took, and believes he's having a severe reaction. By his wheezing and obvious difficulty breathing, Lou realises he needs to be taken to hospital. Since Jack's out in his truck and Ty's is no longer operational, she rushes out to find Caleb.

“You have to help those kids, Ty,” Clint manages to choke out. “If anybody can reach them, it's you.”

Ty doesn't think he's up to the task because he knows zilch about kids, but Clint tells him he's the 'poster boy' for the system, that he just needs to show Tara and Badger how. He's obviously telling Ty he's passing the reins to him, as he'll obviously be out of commission for the foreseeable future.

Over at the O'Dell-Stanton trailer, Val arrives with a newly-baked loaf of pumpkin bread for Ashley. The girl thinks her mother is there to talk her into coming home, but she'll not be hearing any of that, thank you very much. Val simply says that Rosalita baked the loaf that morning, and knowing it's Ashley's favourite, decided to bring it down to her. Of course Ashley finds it patently absurd that Val would come all that way just to deliver pumpkin loaf. As it turns out, Val mentions she has an 'appointment' in Calgary on Monday and was wondering if Ashley wanted to accompany her.

Digression: Okay, as soon as I heard this, I thought: somethin' ain't right, boys 'n' girls... It's been a notion at the back of my mind that some other dramatic storyline was due for the secondary characters, and Mark Haroun is presenting us with the whiff of one right now.

Ashley bites back that she has no interest in waiting around while Val has her roots dyed, assuming it's some hair salon appointment Val was talking about. Val gives up and decides it's best to just leave. (You can leave the pumpkin loaf, though...) Val drives away without giving Ashley details about her 'appointment'.

Back at Heartland ranch, Badger and Tara are at loose ends. Lou tells them to keep their hands off the ceramic pieces on the mantel, and Badger ignores her order, playfully shoving an earthenware cowboy boot inside his jacket, before returning it to its place. Lou and Amy aren't quite sure what to do with them. Amy says she can handle problem horses, but that problem children are another matter.

But Lou figures they can make things work by following Clint's prepared schedule. Cue the riding lessons! While Mallory coaches an uncertain (and still non-conversant) Badger, Tara looks on in amusement.

Now. In case you haven't carefully observed the episode photo album or watched the preview for the episode, I'll let you know that Tara here has the fashion sense of the stereotypical Goth. She also has more sarcasm in her pinky than Ashley could ever muster in an argument with Val.

Mallory brings Copper around to Tara so she can 'saddle up', but Tara wants no part of it. “Listen, Rainbow Brite: I don't do horses, ponies, or unicorns.”

Mallory explains that Copper won't be any problem because he's gentle, old and deaf.

You're deaf,” Tara proclaims, and demands that Copper be kept away from her. She then stumps off without another word.
“Looks like Vampira doesn't want to go for a ride,” Mallory says, while Badger jumps down from his horse, tosses his helmet aside and takes off after Tara. Amy follows.

(Pop culture references so far for Do or Die: 2. )

Inside the house, Lou is on the phone (possibly with one of Clint's colleagues), demanding he get in touch with them to deal with Tara and Badger, because Heartland Equestrian Connection isn't a baby-sitting service. While she does this, she looks over the lovely bouquet of red roses that have been delivered.

Amy enters, and sarcastically mentions how 'well' the riding lessons are going. She notes the flowers, but Lou doesn't tell her who sent them. (But we can guess, can't we? And no, his name doesn't start with an 'S', an 'N', or an 'M'...)

Lou says that while Clint is going to be alright after the swelling in his throat subsides, Badger and Tara will be overnighting. She tells Amy that Ty will bunk with Badger, but Amy wants no part of any plan that entails her bunking with Tara. Lou, however, doesn't want to hear it, and decides to try to reach Clint at the hospital (for all the good that'll do.)

As soon as Lou's out of the room, Amy sneaks a peek at the card that came with the flowers (the little snoop!) And of course, they're from “Peter”.

Outside, Ty catches Badger lighting up a cigarette. He informs the youth he can't smoke at Heartland, but the request to put out the smoke goes unheeded. Ty repeats himself more forcefully, and Badger flicks the butt in Ty's face. This enrages Ty, who leaps at Badger, grabs him by the lapels and slams him forcefully into the side of the barn.

Amy jumps in to break up the tussle, begging Ty to stop, amidst Ty's angry warnings about what he'll do to Badger if he finds him smoking on the premises again.

Ty breaks off the attack, and shrugs his shoulders in a huff. The ever-silent Badger just sends dark looks to the retreating Ty, and skulks off, leaving Amy to wonder what on earth she just witnessed.

And I'm gonna leave off where we are for now, because once again the hour is late, and TC needs sleep.

@Sarah: I'm pleased that you're waiting for my recap! I'll try to get it all done so you can read it by Thursday.

@Twe: I'm gonna steal your 'Precious Pete' from you, if you don't mind. Brilliant nickname for the guy, oh yes it is.

@marte: Oh, warmest welcome to the Walloon (if you'll forgive the over-generalization). So nice to have more international Heartland fans coming over here and letting us know they exist. No need to apologize for your English, either. I can understand you perfectly.

Part II to be completed soon,

-TC

This last show was amazing. Having Clint bring more kids to Heartland was awesome. It was neat to see how Ty dealt with it. Not so good in the beginning but he really pulled through in the end. He is starting to be like Jack and what could be better. I have to say we love the interaction between Val and Jack. They are two amazing characters and actors. We would love to see them get together more like in the first season. To Shaun Johnston you are a great actor and are the glue of the show. We look forward to seeing you every week. We need more Grampa Jack stories. It was great to see Ashley and her Mom get together and show love for each other unconditionally.CindyBusby and Wanda Cannon you should be so proud of yourselfs you do an amazing job as mother and daughter. Now lets talk about PETER! WOW What a guy! Good looking oh yeah! And him and Lou are great together. They suit each other. This show is a winner and we did see that it is back for a 3rd season so YEAH! Hopefully with as many episodes or more.CBC amazing show. Keep this one going for years!

This episode of HEARTLAND was Marvelous & Sanfrantastic!! (with one exception...the snake part - "Ditto" to "TC" with "Detest", any other animal in the world is okay with me...just not the sn__e......ew and ick!

The progression of the relationships between the characters were moving along swimmingly and, as always, the comedic relief was perfectly timed.

Not to mention the scenery....aaaahh....seeing my home land never gets old!

@Twe ..I adore readin' your blogs. They make me chuckle..out loud...no word of a lie!!

@TC ...Your Heartland Recaps are brilliant, non-rambling and second to no one, digressions and all. This from a fellow canadian.

Until we meet again.....

This was a great episode and down east we all got to watch the rerun online as soon as it was up (schools and work were closed due to snowstorm).
Amy and Ty? not so fast..its obvious they are closer than Kit and Ty but they go back further and know each other better. I disagree with Raychel..I wouldn't call a hug cheating on Kit and I think Amy will want to see that Ty and Kit are over before there is a kiss.
Ty is not comfortable yet with his history and doesn't tell much to Kits frustration..are they study buddies with benefits?
Ty has got to learn to handle his temper but its interesting that Amy is not frightened of it..she goes after him each time with 'Whats eating you?'.
That said I think he is certainly learning from Jack who is Wisdom personified...how about that move to get Ashley to do something positive for her mother. Jack's comment to Ty about giving the probation kids a break made me think Ty could get more involved in corrections type work later and do it at Heartland. At least he is paying any breaks he got forward to the kids..was badger a younger version of Ty.
I am so glad that we have season three to look forward to. :)

...And we're back for Part II of my now redundant synopsis, since 'nikole' is giving me a real run for my money with her own reviews!

It Takes One to Know One

Following the 'incident' with Badger, Ty works out his frustration on his old truck. Amy confronts him about his blow-up, and tells him that she's noticed his change in behaviour ever since Tara and Badger showed up. He claims he's fine; that it's just his truck that has him upset. (Sure, it is, Ty. And there Mallory was defendin' you against charges of bein' a liar on Seismic Shifts, and you done gone and told a whopper twice, and this episode ain't hardly half-finished!)

Amy tells Ty he can't exactly hide out in the garage all weekend, and Ty retorts that he's not a camp counsellor, and that it's not his job to deal with Clint's delinquents. Amy argues it's not her job, either, but because of Clint's incapacitation, they need to make it work. She figures Ty should be able to be of some assistance, since he probably knows a little of what Tara and Badger are going through.

Ty looks offended by this assumption, asking Amy why she thinks he has some special insight into the pair. “Because I got in trouble when I was a kid? That makes me an expert?” he asks.

“You know what I mean,” Amy says in a conciliatory tone. (Yeah, I think she's just realised she's treading on dangerous territory here.)

An angry Ty replies that he actually doesn't know what she means. He declares that if she thinks he's going to sit around a campfire with the kids, swap stories about their hard-knock lives and sing 'Kumbaya', then she's seen one-too-many After-School Specials. Ty then moves off to grab another tool and zips his lip, effectively sending the message that the topic is closed for discussion. Stung by his rejection, Amy leaves him alone.

Someone's crying, Lord, kumbaya...

Okay, so no one was crying, but I couldn't resist...Ahem...

We're taken next to Maggie's Diner where we see Jack sitting at one of the tables, idly handling his cowboy hat. Camera pans up and...oh! This is a surprise! He's sitting with Val Stanton! She kindly (kindly, even!) asks him if she can't order something for him, and he politely declines the offer. He says he's just curious as to why she wanted to meet with him. (So are we, grandpa Jack, but we suspect it has a little something to do with that aforementioned 'appointment'.)

Val tells him he can relax, because it isn't a business-related call. In a rare moment of humanity, Val reveals it's of a personal nature. She explains that she's having some 'tests' done on Monday in Calgary, to which Jack expresses his hope that it's nothing serious. Val shrugs it off, saying she thinks her doctor is probably being overly cautious, but one gets the impression from her demeanour that she's more than a little freaked out by the prospect. Val further explains the situation: she's being 'put under' for whatever procedure she's to undergo, and she wants to know if Jack would be willing to drive her there and back.

Jack says he'll do it, but wonders aloud if this isn't something Val ought to tell Ashley. Val answers that she doesn't want to worry her daughter over nothing, and Jack doesn't press the matter.

Okay, me talking here...For the length of time we've known her, Val's the sort to talk out of both sides of her mouth. She'll disparage Amy, gossip about Lisa and Jack's relationship, show signs of being verbally and physically abusive to Ashley...yet she'll claim Jack's friendship and claim to be thinking of Ashley's best interests. It's difficult to feel sorry for someone with such a...complicated psychological and emotional make-up, but Val does seriously look scared for herself here. The question is: should we feel concerned for her, too?

Okay, back at Heartland, Tara's killing time by watching some wildlife program. (Bella, the Burmese Python...seriously, does this girl have an obsession with reptiles, or something?..and is it just me, or did the off-camera female voice during that brief sound-bite on the documentary sound a lot like Jessica Steen? Maybe I'm just hearing things...) Amy puts an abrupt end to that by shutting off the television. She informs an annoyed Tara that Clint didn't bring her to Heartland to just sit around all day doing nothing, avoiding her riding lessons. Tara counters that she's not avoiding the lessons, but that she's past the 'beginner' stage, and more at an 'advanced' level.

“You're not afraid of horses at all?” Amy asks, with just a touch of a challenging note, testing Tara's resolve.

“No.” Tara replies, not sensing the trap before it's too late.

“Good,” Amy says, “because Mallory's waiting for you in the barn.”

Yup, Tara fell right in that one.

In the barn, Mallory officially introduces Copper to Tara, explaining that she trains him and grooms him, espousing again his gentle nature and other virtues. Of course Tara is royally unimpressed, and says mockingly: “Yeah, Hilary Duff, before you, like, bust into a musical number or something, you should know I'm not into horses.”

I think her new nickname is going to be 'Tara the Broken Record Goth-Girl'. Too retro, maybe?

Oh, and pop culture references so far for Do or Die now up to 3. Perhaps Tara ought to be called 'Miss Pop-o-pedia', instead.

Undaunted by the girl's negative attitude, Mallory tries a different tack, and asks Tara what she is 'into'.

“I dunno,” Tara replies with a complete lack of enthusiasm. “Music, slasher movies, Japanese game shows...boys...”

“I'm into boys!” Mallory says.

Tara sarcastically says she's sure all the boys are into Mallory, too, what with all her 'pep'. Mallory hides her momentary hurt at Tara's words, but says she does alright. (Yes, indeed...young Jake certainly comes to mind.)

Tara reveals that her last boyfriend got on her nerves, so she zapped him with a stun gun, which is how she wound up on probation.

She's obviously trying to scare Mallory off with these revelations, but Mallory doesn't seem to be frightened. Tara goes for a more vulnerable spot. She starts describing a picture of what she perceives Mallory's life to be: one that includes two perfect parents who tuck her in at night, and a bedroom painted pink, filled with stuffed bunnies. (Oh, and just note the ominous music score, building quietly in the background while Tara mouths off. Nice touch by Keith Power, there.)

Well, we all know Mallory's folks certainly aren't around to tuck her in on account of being on tour, so Tara's last comments to start to get under her skin. She puts up a brave front and announces she's taking Copper out so they can begin the riding lesson.

Tara shouts that, again, she doesn't want to ride the stupid horse. “You 'horse girls' are so annoying!” Gee, Tara, why don't you tell Mallory how you really feel?

Mallory asks why Tara has to be so mean about it, and the other girl scoffs, knowing there's little Mallory can do about it. “What are you gonna do?” she asks. “Call the warden? Maybe you could call the Care Bears! They could come to Heartland on a caring mission and cure me with their 'Care Bear Stare'.”

Buttons effectively pushed, Mallory's had enough and leaves the barn. Tara revels in successfully ditching her 'riding instructor'. The meanie.

Pop-culture reference count for Do or Die: we're now up to 4.

Over at Maggie' Diner, Lou has just finished paying for her coffee at the counter. Peter sees her and approaches. She doesn't see him and...you guessed it...another of Precious Pete's shirts is going to need dry-cleaning. (Told ya I was gonna steal that one from you, Twe!)

Lou apologizes again, but Peter says he should know by now not to get in her way. (Hmm, I sense a double-meaning in those words.)

Lou says she's really embarrassed and just wants to cut and run, but Peter stops her and says he thinks they should at least talk about the flowers he sent her. Lou desperately tries not to get trapped in a conversation and doesn't want to discuss the flowers. Peter jokingly says that the flowers were probably a “lame gift”, and that he's going to get her something better.

“This is not about the flowers,” Lou says. She tells him that what happened between them (i.e., the kisses they shared in Seismic Shifts!) was a mistake. “Just because there's an attraction between us-”

Peter stops her in the middle of her sentence. “There's an 'attraction'?” he repeats, hoping he heard her right.

“Isn't there?” Lou replies.

“Yeah, absolutely!” Peter says.

Lou falls back on her standard defensive stance with her standard words of attack when she's fighting a losing battle. She says: “That is not the point!”

(Idiotic digression: Forget for a moment that Heartland is a, uh...'family-oriented' show...If there's ever a 'drinking game' for Heartland, every time Lou mutters 'That is not the point', or words to that effect, participants in the game should have to drink a shot of something. Because seriously, she says those words a lot! Disclaimer: TC in no way endorses the reckless endangerment of the well-being of anyone, and does not recommend indulging in beverages of an alcoholic nature for frivolous activities.)

Okay, back to Lovely Lou and Precious Pete:

Lou says that the point is that their on-line relationship may have been nice, but in the real world, they're from different universes. Peter stares at her with this wonderful intensity as she tries to argue why they're not good for each other. “I'm running a campaign against the company you own,” Lou says, as if he forgot that one. “We have to be practical.” With that, she says goodbye, and leaves the diner.

Back at Heartland Ranch, Tara has returned to her couch potato persona. Mallory storms in and blocks the television. She starts rebutting Tara's earlier somewhat accurate, but incomplete assessment of her life. Mallory admits she does have a stuffed bunny named 'Knucklehead', but that her parents don't tuck her in every night because they haven't been around for months, which is why she lives at Heartland. She goes on to say that even though everyone may seem nice, no one ever really pays any attention to her. Mallory reveals that sometimes she feels that the only one that's ever happy to see her is Copper.

“Wow,” Tara says, through a theatrical round of applause and a voice laced with sarcasm, “Reese Witherspoon, you really did deserve that Oscar®!”

Mallory doesn't flinch. She advises Tara that she doesn't really care what she thinks about her, but that she needs to know she's not the only one in the world with problems.

Out in the garage, Ty's still struggling with repairs to his truck. Tara makes her move, and comments on the music he's playing, saying she hasn't heard that particular band in years. (If I heard her right, Ty's playing a group by the name of 'Tangiers'.)

“Yeah, well, I'm old,” Ty says dryly, obviously not terribly interested in finding common ground with Tara.

“Obviously,” Tara answers back, “nobody listens to trashy garage-rock anymore. It's all about 'Hannah Montana'.”

Ty tells Tara she can always borrow one of Mallory's albums if she's jonesin' for a 'Miley' fix.

Ooh, my pop-culture reference sense is tingling somethin' awful! Wow. Mark Haroun is just rackin' up those pop-culture allusions! If we add in the Reese Witherspoon and Oscar® reference, and count the Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus as separate references, boy, we're up to a whopping eight by my count...

Back now, to the episode: Tara asks Ty about his past with Clint, but Ty says it's none of her business. She tries a little reverse psychology, saying it's not like she wants to hear some sob story. She switches gears again, and ingratiatingly says she's glad he's the only cool person around. (Have a wee bit of a developing crush, do we?)

Ty shoots down the notion that he's 'cool', and Tara says he seems pretty cool to her, and that she always falls for the “moody, damaged type.”

The look on Ty's face says it all: he rolls his eyes in annoyance and disgust. Tara doesn't pursue the matter further, and instead retreats to what little common ground she seems to think they share. She puts on a group she thinks Ty will like called 'Hey, Rosetta'. While the track plays, Badger comes wandering in. Ty sees him, and tells Tara: “Your 'boyfriend' is here.”

Embarrassed, Tara says Badger's not her 'boyfriend'. She tells the poor kid to take a hike, and to stop being a “creepy stalker”. Badger gets the message and takes off, once again looking like a wounded puppy. Aww...poor Badger, with the sad, brown eyes, rejected by Tara like that!

While Tara tries to pick up where she left off with Ty, Badger goes into the stalls and starts unlatching the doors one by one, letting all the horses escape.

Attracted by the sounds of whinnying, Ty, Tara and Amy head outside to see what's going on. They observe that the horses are all free and in flight. Amy mounts up and gives chase, while Ty goes into the barn to confront Badger.

Ty angrily wants to know what Badger is doing. Sensing he's about to get into serious trouble, the boy grabs a baling hook, and swings it around menacingly in Ty's direction, striking out at him several times, but thankfully missing his mark. (Wouldn't want to ever see Ty's face marred by that wickedly sharp hook, now would we?! Of course not!)

Tara jumps in protectively, and urges Badger to stop and relax. She reminds him that she told him she was always going to watch his back, and that's what she's doing. Tara convinces him that nobody's going to hurt him. She coaxes him to hand over the hook, which he does, after sending one final nasty look over in Ty's direction.

Tara quickly dumps the hook in one of the stalls when they hear Jack calling out for Ty. (And man, does Jack sound upset!)

“What's goin' on in here?” Jack growls when he enters the barn.

They wipe the guilty looks from their faces, but Tara and Badger look fearful that Ty's going to tattle. Instead, he tells Jack nothing's going on, that he has it under control. (And that's little white lie #3, you've told this episode, by my count, Mr. Borden! I can hardly blame you for this one, though...) Of course, Jack just purses his lips and you know he's not buying a word of it.

After Amy and Ty have finished securing the last of the runaway horses, Tara intercedes for Badger, telling them he's really not a bad guy and that he wouldn't hurt anyone.

“Yeah, right,” Ty scoffs.

Amy asks why he never talks, but Tara doesn't know the answer to that one. All she does know is what others in their group home say about him, and that is that his step-dad messed him up “quite a bit” and that sometimes Badger “freaks out about stuff”. She then thanks Ty for not squealing on them, but that she expected he wouldn't. Ty asks her what she means by that. She tells him given all the stuff he must have pulled when he was younger, telling on them would make him a hypocrite.

Ty gets defensive, and tells her no matter what she's heard or what she thinks she knows about him, she's wrong, and to again mind her own business.

Tara's parting barb: “You are such a drama queen!”

Amy, feeling hopelessly lost, asks Ty what the problem is, but he doesn't answer, and takes off into the house. (TC imagines a reversal of a snippet of conversation that would go something like this: 'Amy, am I moody and handsome?')

Jack asks Ty if he wants to tell him what is going on, but Ty dodges the question, and just says that the sooner the kids leave, the better. Jack softens, and says he used to think the same thing about Ty once. He admits that when Ty first arrived, he couldn't wait for him to mess up so he could kick him off Heartland. “I almost did, several times,” Jack says, recalling instead that Ty proved him and a lot of other people wrong. He advises Ty that maybe he ought to give Tara and Badger the same opportunity. Ty looks like he's seriously considering Jack's words.

Okay, how precious is that little moment? I'm personally thrilled to hear Jack admit this to Ty, because Ty really hasn't received a lot of credit for making things work after being dealt such a rotten hand in life (of which we will learn a little more later in the episode). These are the kind of moments that really define Heartland, I think.

Quick return to the barn where Tara approaches a despondent Mallory. Goth girl is actually showing some signs of remorse when she apologizes to Mallory for the 'Reese Witherspoon' comment. Tara admits she did so because Mallory seemed so perfect and popular, and all that fakey stuff she evidently despises in a person. “You should be student council president,” Tara adds.

“Are you kidding?” Mallory says, and reveals that all the kids in her school think she's weird. Tara suggests Mallory ought to bring her to school on Monday, and give the kids a whole new definition of 'weird'. But Mallory is a harder nut to crack than Tara thinks, and refuses to let her make amends so easy.

“So, you think we could start over with Cooper?” Tara asks.

'Copper',” Mallory corrects. “I thought you weren't 'into' horses.”

Tara still says she's not, but since there's no cable TV, why not?

Ooh, I sense a blossoming friendship, yes?

Okay, so that closes Part II. Be back later to talk all about what's happening with Ashley and Caleb; Ashley and Val; Kit and Ty; Ty and Amy; Mallory and Tara; Tara and Badger...oh, yes, there's still lots to come, I promise!

Be back with Part III,

-TC

T.C.: Your synopses are awesome- well written with insight and attention to detail. (I find myself re- viewing episodes to catch something I`ve missed.) Your efforts must be invaluable to those poor deprived souls who cannot watch Heartland. Keep up the good work.

All-righty! Sorry for the delay. I got busier than I anticipated this week, and something had to give, namely time devoted to my Heartland recap. TC presents Part III!

Friends and Enemies

Amy dismounts up at the O'Dell-Stanton trailer to find the pair cooking wieners and beans over the firepit. Caleb looks happy to see her, and informs her she's just in time for supper. Ashley, amazingly enough, does not appear to be perturbed that Amy has shown up. She cheerfully shakes a can of whipped cream and announces it's going to be their dessert. She sprays some into her mouth, and spills some on her chin. Caleb jokingly admonishes her about ruining her dinner.

Ashley brightly announces she doesn't care, since she's emancipated herself from her mother. “I can do whatever I want, right, Amy?”

“Yeah, I guess,” Amy replies dubiously.

Caleb wants some of the whipped cream, and Ashley enthusiastically tosses him the can. He also squirts some into his mouth, and says that it's good stuff. He asks Amy if she wants some, too, but she resignedly says no. She looks like she feels like the third wheel and decides she should just go, but Caleb frets that she only just got there and seems reluctant to see her leave so soon. He tries to convince her to stay on, and asks her what's the matter. Amy answers that she doesn't want to interrupt their little party, and snidely adds that maybe later they can have their own whipped-cream fight.

Caleb understands that Amy's still upset at the situation with Ashley, but reminds her that they've talked about it and that he thought she trusted him.

“I thought I did too, Caleb,” Amy says, and heads for home.

Poor Caleb just seems at a total loss as to what to do to make things right.

Riding lesson redux! Tara wonders aloud why people go ga-ga over horses. “They just seem like big 'poo machines' to me.” Mallory smiles at this description. She tells Tara and Badger that horses are really smart, and that you can tell them secrets, since it's not likely the animal will ever tell anyone else.

“Okay, Copper,” Tara says bravely, “here I come, so you better not slobber on me.” The girl takes a few tentative steps to where the horse is tethered, and cautiously extends her hand. The horse starts a bit at her approach, and Tara backs off, afraid he's going to eat her arm off. Mallory promises he won't hurt her. At that moment, Badger quietly steps up and places a treat in Tara's palm to give to Copper. (Cue the gentle, poignant music score.) He takes her arm in his hand and gently guides her closer to the horse. Copper eagerly nibbles on the treat, much to Tara's surprise and delight. “He's eating it!” she says happily. “Are you seeing this?”

“Yeah, I think he likes you,” Mallory says while Tara bravely strokes Copper. Badger looks on at the success his simple gesture has brought, and a shadow of a satisfied smile flashes across his face.

Awww...it's no After-School Special, but it looks like Goth-girl has a marshmallow core capable of breaking through her veneer of nastiness. (And it was done all without having to sing one verse of 'Kumbaya'!)

Head on down with me to Maggie's Diner, if you would, where there's a little trouble brewing in Paradise.

Ty has his head solidly in his Math book. Kit seems to be more in the mood for some fun, and shuts the text, saying that there's been enough studying going on for a Saturday night. He disagrees, and states that no matter how hard he studies, he always feels like he's one step behind.

Kit sits herself down opposite him and addresses the fact that for as long as they've been seeing each other, Ty has never once explained why he never finished high school.

We get the impression here that Kit's also been too polite to actually ask him outright...until now. Obviously there's a lot she doesn't know about Ty Borden, and the holes in his history are starting to bother her.

Ty tries to brush off her implied question by saying he supposes he just wasn't a very good student. Kit says she finds that hard to believe, since he's been getting straight As. Ty again tries to deflect the probing by saying maybe if he'd had a hot tutor like Kit back then, he'd have made the Honour Roll. The comment doesn't really impress Kit, and she follows up on the question of Clint's identity. “You know, the 'wrestler'?” She fixes him with a piercing gaze that just about makes Ty squirm. He answers that Clint is 'nobody', and grabs a dessert menu, suggesting they order some. He passes it to her and tells her she can pick.

Kit closes the menu tells Ty that the reason she loves Math is that if she works at it hard enough, the answers will come. But with Ty, no matter what she does, she always ends up with more questions. She looks extremely disappointed that he refuses to open up to her.

Tsk, tsk. Poor Ty. He's just digging himself deeper into a hole here. It is clear Kit knows he's holding back on her as he tries to avoid her questions. If he's not careful, he's going to alienate her for good.

We return now to the 'Dude Ranch' cabins, where Tara claims the only bed, which leaves the floor as the only other option for Amy. Mallory comes in a calls dibs on the bed, too, and she and Tara begin to play-fight over it. Silliness ensues.

(No pillows were actually harmed in the filming of these scenes.)

Outside, Amy joins Ty at the campfire . She asks him where Badger is, and Ty informs her that he's sleeping. “You're not such a bad camp counsellor after all,” she compliments him.

“Yeah, right,” he replies, and pokes at the fire. Amy wants him to explain exactly what's been going on with him.

Ty explains he feels so inadequate about everything, because he rejects the 'poster boy for success' label Clint has applied to him. Amy says that maybe Clint is just proud of him, and that it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Ty tells Amy she doesn't understand, but she replies that she wants to understand (if he'd only tell her what's been going on!)

Background information alert!!! Background information alert!!!

Here we go, folks: from the horse's mouth, the sad story of How Ty Met Clint.

“When I was a bit younger than Badger, my mom married this new guy.”

(Whoa! I had assumed Ty's delinquent ways may have had something to do with Brad Borden's criminal activities...)

Ty haltingly explains that step-daddy made Brad look like a saint. Yikes.

“I promised myself when I got older, I'd pay him back for everything...and I did,” Ty says, unable to even look at Amy. She wisely doesn't interrupt, but you can just see her heart is aching for him.

“I probably would have killed him if the neighbours hadn't called the cops.” He looks almost haunted by the memory of this, and tells Amy that's when he got acquainted with Clint. Ty further says that the group home kids he was a part of would say that Clint only got sent the 'hopeless cases'. Amy states that they were obviously wrong on Ty's account.

Ty says he's not so sure about that, because he doesn't regret what he did, and that he'd do it again if he had to. Amy is at a loss for words at his revelations. She must be having a hard time reconciling the differences between the youth with the violent past, and the caring young man she sees now.
Tara and Mallory's noisy antics draw their attention, and Ty tells her she should probably go. She reveals she's glad he came to Heartland, and gives him a friendly squeeze on the shoulder as she heads back to the cabin.

Later in the night with Amy fast asleep, a giggling Tara and Mallory sneak off to the little dock by the water. Under the full moon, Tara honestly says she's never seen anything so beautiful in her entire life.”Except maybe Ty Borden,” she adds.

“I kissed him once,” Mallory says.

“Shut up!” Tara says incredulously, craving details. Mallory admits it was an impulsive smooch, and that since Ty didn't really kiss her back, it doesn't count. Tara disagrees and thinks it does indeed 'count'. “You are like, my new hero,” she says, eliciting a laugh from Mallory.

Cut to a quick scene of Badger observing their conversation from behind a tree. Huh. Maybe there is something to him being a 'creepy stalker', in Tara's words.

“What about you and Badger?” Mallory asks curiously.

Tara admits she likes the boy, but that it's hard to know where he's at because he never talks. Badger at once looks hopeful when he hears Tara likes him, but hurt when she says she doesn't understand him. Tara concludes that the boy is so damaged, and that sometimes, he even scares her.

They then return to gossiping about Ty and 'the kiss', and Badger slinks away in disappointment. He's clearly upset that Tara hasn't got more to say about her feelings for him, since he evidently has feelings for her. The actor, Jack Knight, really deserves credit here, because his facial expressions speak volumes. We know exactly what's going through his head, and he still hasn't uttered a single word.

The next morning, Badger can't be found anywhere, and Ty notes that one of the horses is missing. Amy instructs Mallory to take Tara inside while she and Ty search for the runaway. They ride out on separate paths, and Ty eventually discovers the missing but riderless horse, chomping away on some grass. He spots the boy lying on the banks of the river, unmoving. Ty frantically clambers down and pulls the boy up. Badger comes to, shivering from the cold. Ty hurriedly removes his jacket and attempts to wrap it around Badger, but the boy refuses to be touched. He flinches at every attempt, and shoves the jacket away, which starts to really frustrate Ty.

He yells at Badger that if he wants to die out there, he hasn't got a problem with that. Ty does, however, take exception to Badger taking the horse and endangering it. He calls it a really stupid move, and Badger at last says something. Through chattering teeth, he tells Ty to leave him alone, and that he doesn't want Ty's help.

“So that's it? You're done? Giving up?” Ty asks.

“Something like that,” Badger responds.

Ty crouches down in front of the boy and tells him: “That's crap! Clint gave you a chance when you got here, and you just blew it. You probably just bought yourself a one-way ticket to a locked unit.”

“Who cares?” Badger says. Ty replies that he bets Tara does, but Badger thinks she doesn't; that she thinks he's a freak. Ty advises Badger that girls really aren't into guys that don't communicate.

Badger looks like he's on the verge of tears, saying it's too late.
“No, it's not,” Ty counters. Badger looks up at Ty with a flicker of hope, and allows himself to be wrapped in Ty's jacket.

Back at the house, Ty 'explains' to Clint that Badger got 'lost' going out for a smoke, and that he “took a bit of a spill” on his way back. Jack backs him up on this. Clint says he'll be sure to put that in his report, and that judging by the success of the weekend, he'll definitely be bringing more kids out to the 'Dude Ranch'.

Over at slumber-party central, it's Extreme Makeover: The Goth Edition! Tara is busy applying ultra-dark lipstick on Mallory's lips, saying her parents will totally freak when they see her. Mallory looks at herself in the mirror, and we find out she's agreeing to all this on the grounds that Tara will give the riding lessons on Copper a chance. Tara resignedly says she's a woman of her word.

Update on Lou and Peter's situation: In her barn office, Lou's just received a nicely-wrapped gift and is in the process of reading the card when Amy shows up and snatches it away. (Wow, she's truly being nosy about this!)

Amy reads that the card/gift are from 'Peter', and that he must have it really bad for Lou. When Lou demands she give the card back, Amy teases Lou with a smile, and begs her to spill the details of the date they had (the 'kiss-and-run' date in Seismic Shifts of course). Lou grabs the card back.

“What did he look like?” Amy asks for just one, tiny detail.

Now, here it is, Sunday (by my count), and Lou's date with Peter was Tuesday. You mean it's taken Amy this long to inquire about the pertinent details? Okay, I suppose she's tired of holding in her questions, so I'll actually forgive her snoopy tactics.

Lou starts off saying: “Well, he was very...Goth...?”

Amy it taken aback by this, but it turns out Lou has just seen the effects of Tara's handiwork on Mallory.

Fully decked out in black leather jacket, black pants, boots and even dark streaks through her hair, Mallory's leading Cooper around – with Tara in the saddle!

Lou and Amy stare at her with a mix of amusement and confusion.

“What are you looking at?” Mallory asks, with mock rudeness.

Lou replies that she's just glad the riding lessons are going well...

Ty heads out of the house to find Badger sitting there, flicking his lighter. He reminds the boy about the 'no smoking' rule, and Badger obediently puts the lighter back in his pocket. He thanks Ty for not telling on him again. He also hesitantly says that he's going to try talking to Tara.

“Pretty brave move,” Ty tells him, and asks if he's sure he's up to the task.

Badger looks a little overwhelmed at the prospect, and admits he's not sure, but that he'll do it anyway before it really is too late.

Yay, Badger, Badger, Badger!! There's hope you yet, kiddo!

Monday morning, and Jack and Val have hit the road. (Oh, those snow-capped Rocky Mountains make a breath-taking backdrop to frame these shots!)

Jack pulls to a stop on the side of the road, prompting Val to ask what's going on. Turns out Ashley is waiting there with her car, looking very serious.

They get out of the truck, and Val asks her daughter what she's doing there. Ash reveals that Jack called her, and wants to know why Val didn't say anything about the medical appointment. Val shoots a look back at Jack. An expression akin to betrayal crosses her face.

“It's just some tests,” Val says, trying to make light of it.

Ashley replies that whatever it is that her mother is going through, she won't let her do it alone. Wow. She actually looks like she means that.

“Just get in the car,” Ashley says, clearly not willing to take 'no' for an answer, adding that she doesn't want to fight anymore.

Great emotion on Val's face here. Talk about an unexpected breakthrough. Cindy Busby and Wanda Cannon play off each other beautifully here as we watch their prior conflict drain away to reveal that there's actually a caring bone in their bodies instead of a bone of contention.

Val says she'll go with Ashley, but looks like she wants to have a word with Jack first. He knows he's about to get the 'what-for' from Val as he hands her her purse. He admits he knows it wasn't in his place to do what he did, but Val relents, and just she pats the side of his face like one would do to a dear friend.

I mean hey, after all, he's pretty much facilitated this reconciliation. I'd be thankful, too! It's not everyday Val's armour cracks, so these vulnerable moments are really important to the development of the character. We'll see if it lasts, or if she switches back to 'bad Val' should whatever medical issue turn out to be a false alarm.

Jack gives Ashley a parting wink, and she nods back in reply as Val gets into the car. I don't know if that little exchange was originally scripted, but it was a nice touch, regardless.

We head on back to Maggie's Diner, and see Lou entering. She's looking around and finally spots Peter, seated at the counter. His face lights up with a smile, and she waggles the 'gift' he sent her.

“Spill-proof mug,” he says. Ooh, I like how practical this guy is. (Or maybe it's just self-preservation for his poor shirts and ties...He doesn't need to have any more Jackson Pollock-inspired coffee stains, now does he?)

Lou sits down and asks what she's even doing there with him; that she doesn't even know him.

Peter suggests that what they're going to do, then, is have an actual conversation. No instant messaging, no spontaneous make-out sessions, just normal people-talk. “What do you think?” he asks her. Lou thinks that she can handle that.

“Okay,” they both agree.

That's not to say that spontaneous make-out sessions can't happen later, Peter says jokingly.

Lou tells him not to push his luck on that one, but smiles anyway.

Even though we hate to leave this pair, we cut to Ashley returning to the trailer. Caleb notices she's extremely upset. Ashley gets emotional, explaining that she took Val to the clinic.

“What if she's really sick?” Ashley asks, on the verge of a tearful breakdown. “I don't have anyone else!”

Small digression: I thought Ashley had a brother. Recall in episode 103 Breaking Free when Ashley saw Ty admiring the brand new Ducati motorbike, she said it was her brother's birthday present. I don't know where this other member of the Stanton family is (probably been alienated by Val so he stays away, too), but clearly Val shouldn't be the only person Ash has left.

Of course, Ash could just be playing this up because...Caleb soothingly tries to comfort her saying: “You have me,” and allows her to cry on his shoulder.

Back at Heartland, Amy finds Ty up in the hayloft of the barn, looking out on Badger and Tara. The two 'delinquent' kids are sharing a conversation, and Amy marvels that the boy is actually talking. She wonders aloud what he's saying to Tara. As if in reply, we watch the girl give Badger a big hug. With a satisfied smile, Ty says that whatever it was Badger said, it worked.

Amy grows serious for a moment, and asks Ty why he never told her about his past with his stepfather before.

“I never told anyone else before,” Ty answers. Amy leans over and the pair embrace.

Tara and Badger look up and see them. Tara laughingly yells out for them to 'get a room'. Hehe.

Ah, two happy almost-couples!

Cue End Credits.

I'm sure I don't have to state the obvious, but I will: This is huge that Ty finally revealed to Amy what happened to land him on probation. One just wonders if there will be any fallout from him holding back on Kit. But Ty and Amy have known each other longer. It's just too bad, because Kit seems like a very empathetic and trustworthy sort of person, so Ty needn't fear rejection. Poor fellow. I don't envy him at all.

Future plot points we will be following: Val's health woes and the recently-mended relationship between her and Ashley, and Lou and Peter's blossoming relationship in spite of the professional odds they're facing. (TC does so love a little something called 'continuity'.)

So all-round terrific performances by everyone, especially Clint's delinquents, played by Kristin Fairlie (Tara) and Jack Knight (Badger).

Still missing-in-action: Scott. We're down to four more episodes in the season (sigh), and still no sign of the guy. I think we're going to need to send out the cavalry.

And whatever happened to that Ben Stillman guy? What, he doesn't know how to visit on holidays? He can't love university that much. Poor Red must be getting so lonely...

And that'll be Do or Die, in three easy installments or less, ladies and gents. I'm grateful for all the positive responses I've received, so an emphatic “THANK YOU” to those who've expressed how much they appreciate what I'm doing: folks like 'sarah', 'Kimbery L', 'smm' and 'nikole'. (sorry if I missed anyone!)

Finally, clichéd telephone count for the episode: Another perfect zero! (I'm so happy!)

'Til next new episode,

-TC

Hello,
I would just like to say thank you for continuing the story writing and creating an interesting storyline. The last two episodes have really picked up the pace with Lou and Peter. Very Romantic! That was beautiful!!!! What a great addition to the story.
We have really enjoyed the show and have followed it every week since it began last year. Thank you for keeping it family friendly, without swearing and with good family values. This is such a rare thing to find these days as TV shows are more and more violent and forget that families still like to watch TV together on Sunday nights. Thank you for remembering us! And creating great shows that teach us how people can get along and work out differences. I especially like how Ashley and her mom have their disagreements and then at the end when Val goes to the clinic Ashley decides to reconcile with her mom.
That was great! All teenagers argue with their parents, but you have shown through the show how they can come back together because deep down they still love each other very much.
Great Work! Keep up the good work!

I am Heartlands Biggest fan! Thank god there is going to be a third season of Heartland!!! That episode was amazing! Badger can be really rough sometimes! I can't belive Ty didn't tell Kit that he used to be on probation! She is going to find out and be mad!!!

Does anyone know who played Tara and Badger?

Hey Heloise The actor who plays Badger is Jack Knight. Check him out on imdb.com I agree with Meg. He kinda is like a younger version of Ty. I think Ty would make a great mentor to a troubled kid like Badger. And horses are great therepy for kids that dont or wont talk to people about their problems.

I love heartland so much especially Ty and Amy's relationship. I love all the little things about it like how Amy was driving Ty's truck and when they talk to each other they always use each others names in the sentance - just makes it really special imo. Can't wait to see what happens in the next episode!
