PHOTOGALLERY: LIFE IN EMERGENCY
He used to take a cab to the hospital, and sit in the lobby and watch the world go by. Now Daniel Harkins, 89, is a man with an inventory of problems: brain cancer, heart disease, a blocked stomach, broken hips, schizophrenia and blindness in one eye. He can no longer be cared for in the supporting housing unit he called home and so paramedics wheel him into hospital, his end point, alone and dying.
