CFIA adds 3 products to list of tampered-with foods

Last Updated: Thursday, March 19, 2009 | 3:44 PM ET

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has warned consumers to avoid three more products sold in a Guelph, Ont., supermarket because they may have been tampered with.

On Thursday, the agency added Schneiders Light 55% Less Fat Wieners, Schneiders Original Juicy Jumbos and Schneiders Hot 'n' Spicy Juicy Jumbos to the list of six identified by Guelph police on Wednesday.

The agency added the new products because they had been tampered with, in addition to the original list provided by Guelph police Wednesday.

Police are investigating after 50-mm sewing needles were found in seven packages of meat products at the No Frills store at 191 Silvercreek Parkway.

The new products are:

  • Schneiders Light 55% Less Fat Wieners, 450 grams, UPC 62000 63681, best before code 2009 AL 16 03692.
  • Schneiders Original Juicy Jumbos, 450 grams, UPC 62000 15806, best before code 2009 MR 27.
  • Schneiders Hot 'n' Spicy Juicy Jumbos, 450 grams, UPC 62000 15822, best before 2009 AL 10.

The original list:

  • Schneiders Lunchmate Stacker Ham, 111 grams, UPC 62000-31917, best before date April 29, 2009.
  • Schneiders Lunchmate Stacker Turkey, 111 grams, UPC 62000-31933, best before date May 8, 2009.
  • Schneiders Lunchmate Stacker Summer Sausage, 111 grams, UPC 62000-11452, best before date April 29, 2009.
  • Schneiders SmartLunch Bag Stacker Pepperoni, 351 grams, UPC 62000-18466, best before date May 8, 2009.
  • Schneiders SmartLunch Bagel Combo, 326 grams, UPC 62000-18469, best before date March 20, 2009.
  • Schneiders Wieners, UPC 0 620180 3, best before date May 4, 2009.

The UPC and date on the Schneiders wieners, the last item above, was changed from the original police report.

One product was purchased and returned to the store, but no one was harmed, police said Wednesday.

The matter is being treated as a criminal investigation, police said.

Shoppers are advised to carefully inspect any similar products for evidence of tampering and to immediately report any tampering to Guelph police.

It is not known whether any other products or any other stores have been involved or targeted, police said.
