Dundas' All About Maggie has proven she can hold her own with a Juno-winner in a new video collaboration with Canadian R&B star Jully Black.
Just don't mention the height difference.
“I felt four feet tall, especially standing next to her,” laughed the diminutive Maggie Szabo, who stands about a foot shorter than Black. “Even before I met her, my publicist said 'you're going to have to do this sitting down.'”
The video, a cover of Rihanna's Stay with Mikky Ekko, was filmed in Hamilton at the Pearl Company on Steven Street in early February.
“I've always been a fan of Jully's, forever,” Szabo told CBC Hamilton.
She reached out to Black about collaborating, and after some debate, the two settled on Stay, a ballad from Rihanna's seventh album.
“It just kind of spoke to both of us,” Szabo said.
The two actually didn't meet until the day of the performance. In true lo-fi fashion, Szabo made recordings on a cellphone of herself performing the song with her guitarist and sent them to Black so she could get a sense of the key and the tempo.
“We just ran it two or three times and then did the video,” Szabo said. “We just kind of clicked.”
The video was shot at the Pearl Company on Steven Street, which has long been one of “those special places” for Szabo. Her current label signed her after a performance at the warehouse venue when she was only 18.
The video was recorded live off the floor with “almost no post-production,” Szabo said, to capture the resonance of the Pearl Company space.
“It's just the brilliance of that room, nothing else,” she said. “It's really laid back and perfect.”
