St. Matthew’s House formally re-opens Friday after renovating its food bank.
Though the food bank has been open and functioning since before Christmas, the holiday rush meant there hasn't been time to officially celebrate the re-opening until now. However, it's only the beginning of renovations for St. Matthew's.
Besides the food bank, the charity also runs community programming for those in need.
Last spring, the intended location for the group's senior home caught fire and destroyed the property before construction could begin.
"It was completely gutted. It's just a burned-out, shell of a building," Jeremy Young, manager of social services for St. Matthew's, said.
After the fire, the group also noticed structural repairs that they needed to make to the food bank. While they waited to deal with insurance after the fire, they went ahead with the food bank renovations, which were completed just before Christmas last year. But now they have the daunting task of rebuilding the senior centre.
"We need to completely rebuild," Young said, adding they've already started the process.
"We've already begun working with the city to get the water and infrastructure in place that's needed before the contractors can go in."
He said they hope to complete the reconstruction later this year.
