Hamilton fire crews were called to an explosion and fire at an industrial building on Barton Street in Stoney Creek east on Monday morning.
According to Hamilton Police, two employees were present when the explosion occurred at Custom Powder Coating, located at 263 Barton St.
One of the employees was taken to hospital with minor injuries, confirmed Sgt. Deb McGreal-Dinning, a police spokesperson.
The explosion was significant, McGreal-Dinning said.
Tom Netherway works at Barlow Packaging, which backs onto the plaza where the blast occurred. Netherway said he thought the explosion had come from inside his building.
“When the explosion happened, the ceiling tiles felt like they were lifting,” he said, adding that he and his coworkers evacuated their workplace as a precaution.
The fire marshal was also called to the scene, said Claudio Mostacci, a spokesperson for the Hamilton Fire Department.
