The province is holding an inquest into the death of an inmate at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre.

Wayne Fougere, 55, died on Aug. 4, 2011. Reports indicate Fougere was in prison for robbing a bank in Stoney Creek in 2010.

Dr. Jack Stanborough, a coroner with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, said he could not comment on the circumstances surrounding Fougere's death.

However, he said the inquest is mandatory under the provincial Coroners' Act, which suggests β€œit was not a natural death.”

The hearings will begin on Feb. 26 at the John Sopinka Courthouse in downtown Hamilton and are expected to last four days.
