New construction in Metropolitan Hamilton was down in November, according to figures released Monday by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), but housing starts were up overall for 2012.
There were 2,765 housing starts in November this year. That's a slight decrease from November 2011, said Abdul Kargbo, CMHC'ssenior market analyst for Hamilton and Brantford.
“This month's decrease in housing starts occurred across all dwelling types, with the exception of townhouses,” he said in a release.
Townhouses increased in November 2012 — from 25 units in 2011 to 132 units last month — while single-detached, semi-detached and apartment starts were lower than the number of units reported in November of last year.
But overall, said, Kargbo, the market is relatively stable.
“When you look at it from a year-to-date view, they are up.”
