Hamilton's Good Shepherd takes home award

Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes has been recognized for its innovation in the non-profit housing sector.
The Hamilton agency received an award of excellence from the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association (ONPHA) on Nov. 19. The provincial award is for agencies who have “imagination and insight,” the association said.
“It's quite an honour to be recognized in this fashion because this award recognizes housing providers who do something special,” Good Shepherd spokesperson Alan Whittle said.
Good Shepherd's innovations include:
- Having tenants and clients engage in the operation. For example, tenants help deliver recreational programs.
- Having a range of social, recreational and health-oriented programs to promote wellness in their buildings, including a program for adults with health issues.
- An employment program to get residents back to work.
Brother Tom Liss, president of Good Shepherd, accepted on behalf of the organization on Friday.
On Sept. 14, Good Shepherd officially opened the $51.5-million Good Shepherd Square, which includes an affordable housing complex and a women's shelter.
