The Hamilton public school board's Education Centre is on a new national top 10 list of endangered places.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Public School Board's building at 100 Main St. W. has been cited by the Heritage Canada Foundation, a national charity dedicated to preserving historic places.
The building, built in 1967, joins Ontario Place, Bala Falls and Canada's lighthouses.
The list is compiled from nominations, stories and news items throughout the year, the foundation's website says.
The new Education Centre will be a $31.6-million building at 50 Millwood Pl.The list brings “national attention to sites at risk due to neglect, lack of funding, inappropriate development and weak legislation.”
The Education Centre building serves as the main administrative headquarters for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
It will be demolished this summer when the land is sold to McMaster University for its downtown health campus. The remaining portion of the 100 Main St. W. land will likely be severed.
The Education Centre is identified on the list as a “modern architectural landmark headed for landfill.”
