Politician, mother, teacher, author and motorcycle
enthusiast Deborah uses her passionate debating skills,
well-honed in Canada's House of Commons, to present
a compelling case for her Greatest Canadian nominee,
Wayne Gretzky, on Wednesday, October 20 at 8 p.m. (8:30NT)
on CBC Television.
Known for her ability to tell it like it is and be heard while doing so, Grey
has made history in the political arena. Grey was born in 1952 in Vancouver, B.C.
(on Canada Day, no less!). She graduated from the University of Alberta in
Edmonton with a double BA (Arts and Education). From 1979-1989, Deborah taught
high school at Alberta's Frog Lake Indian reserve and in Dewberry, Alberta. In
1989, she won a by-election becoming the Reform Party's first Member of
Parliament. During her lively political career as an MP, she witnessed the growth
of her Party's success, as her lone seat in 1989 grew to 52 seats in 1993 and to
60 seats in 1997, when the Reform Party formed the Official Opposition. After 14
extraordinary years in Parliament, Deborah Grey announced in March 2003 that she
would not seek re-election to the House of Commons.

In October 2004, Grey released her memoirs, entitled Never Retreat, Never
Explain, Never Apologize (a favourite quote from another Canadian ground-breaker,
Nellie McClung). It is her story of her life as a teacher and as a single foster
mother to native children. Most of all, it is the behind-the-scenes story of her
triumphant, history-making ascent in politics.
Watch Deborah Grey make a compelling case for her Greatest Canadian nominee on
Wednesday, October 20 at 8 p.m. on CBC Television (8:30 NT).
Encore presentations on CBC Newsworld: Thursday, October 21 at 8 p.m. & 11 p.m. ET,
Saturday, October 23 at 8 p.m. ET.
