Geologist Dr. Gauthier specializes in metallogeny, the study of how mineral deposits form, with an emphasis on their relationships with surrounding features. By gaining a better understanding of these geological processes, it becomes easier to predict possible locations of valuable mineral deposits by looking for specific formations or types of rock that might be associated with their presence.

His work can have a significant impact on resource exploration and development. For example, repeated visits to a site near James Bay between 1996 and 2001 revealed geological structures that indicated potential gold deposits. Subsequent exploration uncovered what may become Quebec's largest gold mine.
