00:58 GMT: An underwater earthquake occurs just 240 km S.W. of Sumatra, Indonesia (magnitude 9.0). Residents in coastal Indonesian towns feel the ground shake for more than eight minutes. The quake is felt as far away as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore

01:30 GMT (8:30am Banda Aceh, Indonesia time): Waves hit the south-west coast, northern tip of Sumatra.

131,934 people killed and 37,066 missing

02:30 GMT (9:30 am Phuket, Thailand time): Waves hit west coast of Thailand.

5,395 people killed and 2,932 missing

02:30 GMT (10:30 am Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia time): Waves hit west coast of Malaysia.

68 dead and 12 missing

02:30 GMT (9:00 am Yangon, Myanmar time): Waves hit Myanmar (Burma).

90 dead and 10 missing

03:00 GMT (9:00 am Colombo, Sri Lanka time): Waves hit east and south-east coast of Sri Lanka. More than 800 killed when a train was struck in Telwatta

31,322 dead and 4,000 missing

03:00 GMT (8:30 am Chennai, India time): Waves hit south-east coast of India.

8,850 dead on the mainland (7,900 in eastern province of Tamil Nadu alone)

1,900 dead, 5,550 missing from Andaman and Nicobar islands, just east of India.

04:30 GMT (9:30 am Male, Maldives time): Waves hit Maldives. Twenty islands are totally destroyed by the tsunami

07:00 GMT (10:00 am Mogadishu, Somalia time): Waves hit eastern African nations (Kenya, Madagascar, Seychelles, Somalia, and Tanzania)
