Bob Lawson, the farmer who owned the land, says the earth was cracked and dry:
LAWSON: It was dry weather. We were haying at the time...And that bicycle track could have been there for a month.
In his original police report, the police identification officer said the bike marks "appeared to have been made quite sometime previous when the earth was wet." See the report.
