Anna Maria Tremonti

An award-winning correspondent for her coverage of the war in Bosnia, Anna Maria Tremonti has worked all over the Middle East and Europe, including a number of former Soviet republics. Before transferring to the CBC's Washington bureau in September 1998, she had been based in Jerusalem, London and Berlin.

While in Jerusalem, Tremonti covered a variety of stories on the Middle East, from the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to the handover of land to the Palestinians, as well as filing documentaries from Iran, Israel and Lebanon. In 1998, she went to Iraq to cover the confrontation with the West. Assignments have also taken her to London, Panama and Moscow, to cover the fall of communism. Other major stories include the rise of the war in Bosnia, the neo-Nazi movement in Germany, the Georgian revolution and the split-up of Czechoslovakia.

Tremonti's journalistic background is extensive. In 1981, the native of Windsor, Ontario hosted 'Information Morning', a local talk show in Fredericton. She also worked in private radio as a reporter and news reader for stations in Ottawa, Fredericton, Halifax and New Glasgow. From 1983 to 1987, she was a local reporter for CBC Television in Edmonton. Before that, she was a radio news reporter in Edmonton and a freelance contributor to CBC Radio's 'Sunday Morning' and 'Morningside'.

Tremonti joined THE NATIONAL as a Parliament Hill reporter in 1987, and in 1991, was posted to the network's Berlin correspondent. She was transferred to London in 1994, and a year later, was assigned to Jerusalem. She has several awards to her credit, including two Geminis, for her coverage of the war in Bosnia and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Her reports from Bosnia also earned her the Ron Laidlaw Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.  In 1997, she received 'Outstanding Achievement' honours from Toronto Women in Film and Television.

A graduate of the University of Windsor, Tremonti has studied French, German and Arabic. She has also taught journalism at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton.

In her debut season, Tremonti contributed a number of noteworthy stories to the fifth estate. She reported on an E-coli scare which hit Canada long before the tragic events in Walkerton. Sadly, the lessons of a similar scare twenty years ago in another Ontario community had been ignored.

She also revisited a long unsolved murder which touched many lives a quarter of a century ago. Anna Mae Aquash was a Canadian Mi'Kmaqu who thrust herself into the very heart of the American Indian Movement in the 1970's. no one knows whom she might have crossed or what events she had become embroiled in, but one day she was taken to a remote spot in the Badlands of South Dakota and murdered. Her killer or killers were never brought to justice.

"Sometimes you just need to go back and look and try to understand these things." says Tremonti.  Even when the trail has gone cold. It's kind of a message to people that someone will always be on your tail. Someone will always be asking questions. We need to hold poeple accountable for the actions they take. And they can't think that if one or two years have gone by and no one has asked questions that no one ever will."

Tremonti and producer Diane Ngui-Yen received the Gracie Allen Award, presented by the American Women in Radio and Television for 'Silenced: The Execution of Anna Mae.'
